Jaehyun stood in the counter, watching you as you flipped the next page of the book that you were reading with an enthusiasm of a kid. From his position, he could clearly see the twinkle in your eyes as you skim through the words printed out on it.
It has been exactly a week since you started to frequent the coffee shop Jaehyun was working at. And in those times, he’d never seen you with an empty hand. You were always holding and reading a book.
He found it captivating; the way your face give out the scene unfolding in the book. If your eyebrows are knitted together, Jaehyun knew that whatever your reading wasn’t pleasing. He knew that when your mouth gapes a little bit, a plot twist was behind it. And whenever you smile with your eyes, he knows that the characters spent a good time with each other.
He wasn’t much of a reader, but because of you, Jaehyun had unobtrusively peeked at the cover of the book you were reading. After days of searching for it to the bookstores, he’d finally found the series. And boy, didn’t he binge-read the first and second book.
Fortunately, you were reading the second book of the series when you visited the coffee shop. And by the looks of it, one more chapter and you were ready for the third book.
“Whose is this?” Jaehyun asked his co-worker, referring to the slice of cake on the counter. He sure knew that it was your order, because Jaehyun had given a lot of attention to your taste buds. Yet he was hoping that you won’t find it creepy.
“For the girl right there,” his co-worker answered. When he attempted to pick up your order, Jaehyun offered to do the honor. With a confused look, his co-worker nodded.
With a tray of your order in hand, Jaehyun walked owards you. You didn’t even notice him as he laid the plate in front of you.
Jaehyun chuckled. “You’re sure this is what you want?” he asked. You looked up to him, face contorted in a confused expression. Jaehyun cleared his throat. “I search her eyes for doubt, fear, uncertainty. But all I see is that fire. Ten hells.”
Upon hearing the words, your face lightened up. Then you spoke the next words from the book, “I am sure.”
Jaehyun stared at your eyes, as if he was the character from the book himself. “Then I’ll find a way.”
You placed the book on the table, your eyes never leaving Jaehyun’s. “What— How did you know that?” you asked, clearly impressed.
A swell of pride bloomed in Jaehyun’s heart. At least, his reading wasn’t in vain. “Well... it’s a good book so I’ve picked it up.”
“Oh, yes.” You chuckled. “It really is.” Then you noticed him still standing. “Oh, please have a seat!”
“Oh, no— it’s okay—” Jaehyun scratched the back of his head, trying to hide the redness of his ears.
“I insist,” you said with a small chuckle. “It’s nice to have someone I could talk about books with.”
Jaehyun sat with a wide smile spread out on his lips.
For weeks, both of you would go on dates in a book store or in a library. Jaehyun’s growing obsession of books matched yours perfectly. And who knows, perhaps your wedding vows would be like those written in a classic book.
