Abel leaned back in his seat when she rolled her eyes, completely unconvinced by the performance. The smile tugging at her mouth gave her away immediately. âNot tall enough?â he repeated, glancing down at himself before looking back at her with a slow, smug grin. âI think my growth might've happened elsewhere, Berta. Care to agree on that?" When she stuck her tongue out at him, he clicked his tongue in mock disappointment. âCareful. Thatâs not very gracious behavior for someone whoâs about to lose.â At the litter box argument, he arched a brow. âOh, so you think love is transactional now?â he teased. âYou scoop a box and suddenly youâre the favorite parent? Thatâs cute, Berta. Real cute.â He leaned a little closer, lowering his voice just enough to make it feel conspiratorial. âCats respect dominance. And charisma. Two things I have in dangerous amounts. Fine if just wanna be maid." When she summarised the bet, admit he won, admit she lost, then sleep with him, he let out a low laugh. âYes, exactly what you just said,â he said smoothly. âLook at you. Excellent comprehension skills.â Her admission that she was very into the second part made his grin widen. There was no hesitation in it. Just confidence. Comfortable, cocky confidence. Her playful warning about low energy made him laugh again, deeper this time. âDisappointing?â he echoed, mock offense lacing his tone. âBerta, I donât operate on low energy. I conserve it. Like a champion.â He gave her a slow once-over, entirely deliberate. âAnd trust me, Iâm never boring competition. Home it is,â he agreed easily. When they pulled up, he watched her jump out before the engine had fully settled, shaking his head with amused disbelief. âYouâre eager,â he called after her, grabbing one of the bags before she could heroically claim them all. âI love that for you.â When she grabbed his hand and tugged him toward the door, practically vibrating with excitement, he let himself be pulled, only to gently tug her back just enough to make her stumble half a step into him. His thumb brushed over her knuckles, grip confident, possessive in that playful way. âReady! Just remember,â he added smoothly as they walked inside, leaning in close to her ear, voice dropping into something silkier, more intimate, âwhen youâre admitting I won, I expect you to say it while on top of me. Properly. Eye contact. Conviction.â He pulled back just enough to flash her a wicked grin. âWouldnât want my girlfriend half-committing to anything.â And then he let her tug him inside, fully prepared to see her win and to enjoy exactly how competitive she got.
berta knew he was all talk. they both knew she always came out on top. she was an incredibly sore loser, and there was no chance she was losing tonight. not a chance. âstop acting so cocky when you haven't beaten me at a single thing in... how long now?â she teased, tapping a finger against her chin as though she were genuinely trying to remember. âfirst of all, you're bluffing. second of all, do you seriously think being all alpha male is going to make our future catââshe pointed a finger at him for emphasisââwhich we are getting, because i'm absolutely going to beat your ass, love you more?â she scoffed dramatically. âairhart... and maid? what next? do you want me to buy a costume too?â she rolled her eyes, another scoff escaping her lips. âyou're ridiculous.â she shook her head, unable to stop herself from smiling. âi think that's why i started dating you in the first place.â still holding onto his hand, she tugged him towards the car. for once, she wasn't thinking about how much she hated him leaving again, or dreading the moment he'd have to go. usually she'd already be counting down to the goodbye, but tonight she was simply happy. genuinely happy. the sadness she'd been carrying around had disappeared the moment he came back. âoh, baby,â she murmured as she climbed into the driver's seat. she turned the key, and the engine roared to life exactly the way she liked it. âi'm not going to lose,â she declared confidently, glancing over at him with a grin. âso that little fantasy of yours is staying exactly where it belongsâin your head. although...â she pretended to consider it. âif i'm feeling generous after i win, i might let you be part of my victory celebration. but in my version, i'm still on top, because i always win.â she nodded matter-of-factly. âi need my podium. and i'm definitely not admitting you're better than me, because that would be a lie... and i'm not a liar.â with that, she pulled away from the kerb, effortlessly weaving through the streets of euroville. driving had always calmed her, despite how contradictory that seemed with the way she loved fast cars and loud engines. after a comfortable silence, her smile softened. âi've gone into full competition mode,â she admitted quietly, stealing another glance at him. âbut i'm really glad you're back.â her voice lost some of its teasing edge. âi missed you like crazy.â
