Bering and Wells refracted

Finally getting around to posting this here. Bering and Wells in my superhero universe.

Myka/Crow’s Foot: Her superpower is the ability to talk with animals. Works better with more intelligent animals; she generally gets the most use out of corvids, rats, and mice. Ants sometimes, but as a bit of a collective intelligence they’re a bit harder to understand. There are of course other animals that she could talk with (such as elephants, primates, and dolphins) that she just doesn’t encounter much in the city. She discovered her powers when, as she was coming out of a flashback, Pete the ferret told her that it was all going to be OK. She doesn’t have the ability to compel animals, note, but she generally gets along pretty well with them, and they provide her with a good deal of information. Served with Pete in the army, has PTSD. Pete is the one who convinced her to become a superhero. Pete considers himself her sidekick, even though he has no powers (that he knows of - he actually has the power that nothing he ingests has any effect [other than nutrition/hydration], but hasn’t noticed yet). Claudia helps with tech/outfit (she has no powers). Myka’s outfit has lots of pockets to store rodents and miscelaneous objects, and a shoulderpad and gloves for birds to land on. General crow/raven aesthetic.

Helena/Morte: Her superpower is “death alignment”. It has two main effects - firstly, the ability to completely heal from any wound (eventually). This works on fatal wounds too, making her immortal (”heals” aging too). Scars will fade eventually. Notably she does not have *speeded* healing, and depending on how bad a wound is she can spend years “dead”. She spends a lot of time buried thanks to this and the lifestyle she leads. The second part of her powers is an “awareness” of recent corpses - she is aware of their location, and their “experience” of being buried and transported. This is limited by both distance (generally around a large city is her limit) and time (varies by no logic she can determine from about a week to a month and a half). The one exception to this is Christina, who she is permanently “aware” of no matter the distance or how much time has passed (If Myka ever dies, she’ll be aware of her too - the time and distance restrictions vary based on how close she was with the now corpse, she’s just been lone wolfing it for long enough that every corpse is close to her “minimum” and she hasn’t noticed what’s behind the small variations in what are more or less strangers). Has dedicated her life and superpowers to violently eliminating the crime family who was responsible for Christina’s death. She literally knows where the bodies are buried, and keeps coming back no matter how much they kill her. Given that she has to pause for a while every time she “dies”, this vengeance quest has lasted for multiple generations. Her powers would be incredibly useful to law enforcement, but she is unwilling to share her vengeance or tone down the violence, so she pursues her vendetta privately. Helena’s clothing tends to be rather dated - she spends so much time being “dead” that she tends to be a bit out of touch/out of time with a lot of things and keeping up with fashion is *really* not her priority. Also often a bit banged up and bloodstained - she get hurt a lot, it’s hard on her clothes. Her skin tends to look a tad corpsey. Graves don’t get a lot of sun, and she has a ton of half-healed injuries/scars/bruises.

Here is the art I did for Halloween (technically still Halloween in California, right?), since it involved crawling out of a grave. This is how Helena and Myka met in the AU set in my superhero universe (this universe exists separately from this fanwork - this is more of “what would Bering & Wells be in this universe” than a “here’s a universe I made for this AU”. I’ll get around to posting about the universe…eventually, probably. I was inspired to put them in this universe by thinking about Bering & Wells and Supercorp and thinking that I couldn’t see either couple in the other’s universe, but I *could* see them both in a third universe).

Myka hears from some mice that someone appears to be digging her way out of having been buried alive. Naturally she rushes over to investigate and help. Of course, Helena does this a lot, but she’s never had *help* clawing her way out before. She appreciates it - digging your way out of even a shallow grave is unfun no matter how many times you do it - but is a bit wary of this strange person and how they knew she was here. Myka is worried and a little bemused - this is her first time helping someone who’s been buried alive, but even so she expected Helena to be rather upset as opposed to “shit, not again”.

So what if we do Warehouse 13: TNG in discovery uniforms JUST FOR SCIENCE THIS ONE TIME? (X)

I’ve played a little fast and loose with the rally’s timeline in this part; this year, it took the driving teams and the rest of the retinue two days to get from the actual finish to Essaouira, where they had the closing celebratory ceremonies. I plead lack-of-structural-imagination-regarding-what-to-use-those-two-days-for license, particularly how I left things at the end of part 1. Mostly, though, I just wanted to get them to lovely Essaouira. Because everyone should have some loveliness.

Road 2

“Et maintenant?” Driss asks. And now?  It is late in the day, this last day, and he and Myka are driving their last drive together, towards the finish. The finish at Essaouira: lovely breezy city by the sea.

“Quoi?” she asks back, as blank a What? as she can manage. He gives her a little tch, a don’t play dumb noise, so she says, “Je pas.”   I don’t know.  Another tch. “Je sais pas ce qu’elle veut.”  I don’t know what she wants.

“Toutes les meufs, elles veulent la même.”  All the girls, they want the same. He’s very confident; his take it easy tone is clear.

“Moi, ouais?”  Me, yeah?

That sends him into hysterics, as intended. He deserves some reward, however small, for having put up with Myka, and for being who he’s been about the whole thing. She grins at him and says, “Tous les mecs, ils veulent la même aussi.”  All the guys, they want the same thing too.  “Les détails.”  The details.

He laughs again and settles in to cajole her into divulging any and all details regarding what she has got up to with women.

Who knew passive aggression in a flower shop could reap such rewards?

Warehouse 13: TNG, @threeofeight prompted me for “Five/Myka - Holodecks” at some point

“Computer,” Myka ordered offhandedly, her movements practiced and routine as she came to a smart stop exactly one step back and to the right of holodeck two′s doors, her fingers never once pausing as they easily manipulated the PADD in her left hand, “begin program Bering Delta Theta, integrating the data previously marked relating to stardate 49725.6.”

The access panel nearby trilled for a moment as Myka stood still, occasionally emitting the half-sound of a beep as it processed the request. “This holodeck is currently in use.”

Summary: Helena G Wells wakes up in Sleepy Hollow, New York, some 250 years in the future, only to discover the man she beheaded in the past has arrived as well. The headless man now rides a white horse, and Helena realizes he is Death, one of the four horseman of the apocalypse. Can she convince lt. Myka Bering of the Sleepy Hollow PD to help her track down, and destroy this harbinger of evil?
