“Your problem is, you underestimate me because I’m a woman.” • The second book in this wonderful series is just as action-packed as the first one. Friends kept telling me between this and the first book (which are supposedly not the best in the series overall) that this was slightly better, but I think I like Magic Bites more. Maybe it’s because the blurb messed me up. It was angled as if the flare would be a catalyst for a god-on-god battle but *SPOILER ALERT* Kate averts that disaster, thank goodness! • “Sometimes life just kept punching you in the teeth, no matter how many times you got up.” • I still liked it though, and the IA duo have yet again managed to astonish me with such layered story-telling that I went ahead and binged the next two books. The idea to have a worldwide magical reckoning allowed for more overlaps in varying myths and legends. I was especially pleased with the treatment of witch and Wicca lore, and their version of The Maid, The Mother and The Crone living in this giant overgrown garden with a giant overgrown tortoise. I also liked the morally ambiguous Bran and I don’t want to spoil it for y’all but I felt Kate’s anguish towards his ultimate fate when it came to that. • “People must make their own choices, no matter how wrong those choices are. Otherwise, they can’t be free.” • The first book already painted Kate’s moral compass quite well but here, she is given more difficult choices to make and I loved that she stayed true to what she thought was the right thing to do. Still v low romance but it’s there, growing steadily. I also love the addition of Julie and Andrea in the roster of well-crafted characters.
