A friend was talking about a Double Life AU, where Derek and Avery are bound together as soulmates, and Derek eats a golden apple to break their bond before taking down the KIY, and my brain can't help but run with the idea. They're part of a death game but the game gets derailed by eldritch forces. Their soulmate bond has a psychic component, they can feel what the other one feels both physically and emotionally, which means Avery can feel the desperation Derek has to keep him safe, but there's nothing Avery can do to alleviate it except stay close and try not to get into trouble. But of course, Avery gets into trouble anyway. I don't have the bandwidth to write this, but I do have the bandwidth to rotate it like a rotisserie chicken.
