At this point in think that D&D has more ardent support than lutheranism. And it's adherents are somehow even more annoying.

love characters who are like "this is how the world works. this is how it has to be (because if i'm wrong i have to face what i've done // if i'm wrong i have to face whats been done to me) "
This trait is much more endearing in fiction than in my mother.
Strange racists and homophobes on the internet seem to have access to an alternate way cooler version of TV than me. "every white character on TV is in an interracial relationship" "every show has a gay couple in it" "main characters keep having to secretly be bisexual and nonbinary" "every show has gratuitous full frontal nudity" like damn promise?? What channel???
as a black gay person real like where y'all be finding this stuff pass the name
for real though, those DO NOT WATCH OR YOU'LL CORRUPT YOUR CHILDREN lists put out by conservative christian family groups is where I find all the stellar tv shows. Like, shit I didn't know half of those existed, thanks for finding them for me, gonna go watch 30 hours of gay tv now!
I think I know how this works.
For personal context, before I went to the '98 Burning Man festival, one of the things I'd read from a couple different journalists was that "everybody" runs around naked. Which, fine by me, I'd already spent a lot of time in clothing-optional spaces, I'm not fanatic about it but it's nice.
So I got there early and set up a public shade structure on one of Black Rock City's main roads and spent most of each afternoon just watching the crowds go by. I don't remember seeing more than one actually naked person the whole week. I think a topless woman passed by my intersection maybe every half an hour, sometimes once an hour. So why in the hell were people, normally pretty smart and observant writers, coming away with the impression that everybody was naked?
Then I remembered an unrelated passage from Joel Garreau's great book about the history of the outer-ring suburbs, Edge City. Mall developers told him flat-out that they tried to keep the crowds in their malls less than 5% black. Not because they themselves were racist, but because they had determined, experimentally, that if more than 5% of the people in the mall are black, the median white shopper will wrongly describe the mall as at least half black, as mostly black. And not a few of them would describe it, at 6% black, as a mall where "only black people go." Why?
Because, emotionally, they were still upset over the last one when the next one came into view.
Same as the journalists describing Black Rock City as all naked. Same as the right-wing religious culture warriors describing television as entirely mixed-race and gender non-conforming. Not because it's even vaguely true, we know that, but because they haven't gotten over their discomfort over the last one by the time the next one comes along. The anger, not the stimulus, is the part that's continuous, so their mind lies to them that it's "all" the thing they can't get over.
Similar effect for the presence/proportion of women in things, by the way: https://health.howstuffworks.com/mental-health/human-nature/perception/how-17-equals-496-the-amazing-multiplying-women.htm
Because, emotionally, they were still upset over the last one when the next one came into view.
this has rewired some neural pathways for me
we've definitely posted about this before but if i see one more person act like the only forms of childhood trauma that exist are abuse from family or sexual assault i will actually start crying and it will be so so so loud everyone will hear it from every corner of the earth
THE SCHOOL SYSTEM !!! PEER ABUSE !!!!! ISOLATION !!!!!!!! RACISM !!! SEXISM !!!!!! MEDICAL ABUSE !!!!!! NONCONSENSUAL SURGERY !!!! POVERTY !!!! SO MUCH MORE !!! AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA
!!!!!
Natural disasters! I never see anyone talk about that one and as a result I spent years thinking that watching my hometown get destroyed on the news and subsequently having to uproot my entire life at the age of seven wasn't Real Trauma because there was no Abuser™
It is so fucking frustrating to have ADHD and go "and I do this as a backup incase I forget-" and people fucking JUMP ON YOU for having a backup and tell you "just don't forget!", as if having Dogshit Memory Disorder is something I personally chose in order to inconvenience them, and it's triply annoying when they also have ADHD.
Planning for when you forget IS a responsible action.
Telling people not to forget is like saying "just don't get in a wreck!" when someone puts a seatbelt on. 1), it's useful for more than just the most dire situation possible, and 2), if people had control over that they would already be controlling it.
I hate the saying that "planning for failure is sign of a bad design" because contingencies are the most effective way to deal with problems
Things break for many reasons, but if you see your points of failure and plan accordingly, its just not a problem for long
Also, i think a lot of designs lack maintenance capacity, being able to just fix things wherever and whenever you are is just something that should be normal
Planning for failure means you can turn what would be a catastrophic failure into a minor setback.
Many aphorisms are oversimplified perspectives on complex issues, but “planning for failure is a sign of bad design” is just categorically wrong.
I tried to paint a happy little tree.
I failed.

'Why does every nonbinary person want top surgery' I dunno maybe because having visible breasts immediately makes everyone assume you're female and only female, and therefore put you into a binary. Also why are you assuming every nonbinary person has breasts.
I think people who believe that should also put some thought into whether every nonbinary person with breasts actually wants top surgery, or whether they've just decided that the nonbinary people with breasts who want to keep them don't "count" as nonbinary.
#i know plenty of nonbinary people who want breasts or like their breasts#but they're viewed as either transtrenders or trans women in denial <- prev tags
Reblog if you are Bad Queer Representation.
So I've seen the post going around that's kind of like "kids should be able to read whatever they want and not have their choices censored by adults" and I largely agree with one caveat which is that children need to be able to opt in. I remember being 12 and sneaking some dirty books, and being interested and excited to read a book with something more sexy in it, and no one died, and everything was fine, and I was not forever scarred. However I do remember being shown a a horror film at seven by a babysitter and not being able to sleep for three weeks, and if I'd known how scary the movie was I wouldn't have wanted to watch it.
Kids can usually know what they can handle. Kids cover their eyes at scary points in films, kids read past stuff they aren't ready for. But it is good to be clear like "Oh that book might have some scary parts you might not like, are you sure you want to get that one?" Or "Oh this book has some grown up things in them that you might have a hard time understanding, I want to check that your okay with that." Like give kids the warnings and options and they will probably make a safe and informed decision. It doesn't have to be either or.
I also think kids should be allowed to be wrong about what they can handle without getting in trouble for it. They should be able to go to the adults in their life and ask for help processing what they saw or read without fear of judgement or punishment.
And kids (and anyone) should be allowed to change their minds at any point.

Marnie continues to adjust to life in the Hotel.
Now that all of arc 104 is out, I can finally post the thing that has occupied so much of my creative energy since we first recorded these episodes. Please enjoy a novella’s worth of words about these dumb kids. (Part two is also available here.)
Evening reblog! If you want most of the context for this, go listen to episodes 104.1, 104.2, and 104.3. If you want more context, you can listen to 84.1, 84.2, 85.1, and 85.2. And if you want full context, you can throw in 46.1 and 46.2. But really only 104 is necessary to understand and enjoy this fic.
Who wants to hear fun facts about Marnie Sands?
@hawthorneox - Marnie started life as a female expy of a male character, but quickly took on a life of her own to the point that I don't think she's recognizable as an expy anymore.
@succulentstuff - In most settings, Marnie is either a clone or genetically engineered somehow, even if it never comes up in play. This is in part because of the character she's an expy of. Even if it doesn't come up, I try to at least subtly indicate something isn't "normal" about her, like with how she played Polybius without any ill effects in arc 104.
@jadeoxfordrose - You already know a lot of fun facts about Marnie, but her name is maritime-themed because of who she's an expy of also having a vaguely maritime-themed name.
@bipolyjack - Marnie could probably be considered to be a monsterfucker considering that she ended up in a relationship with two eldritch entities pretty gladly lol
@parsleysagerosemarytimemachine - I think Marnie is the only cis character I regularly play on FTL. At the very least, she doesn't feel any particular dysphoria that would motivate her to interrogate her gender. I don't know that she's ever given it any particular thought one way or the other, but if she did, she'd still come to the conclusion that she's a girl.
@charaznablescanontoyota - Marnie's hair is blue with acid green tips as a form of wish fulfillment because I've always thought that would look cool but never pulled the trigger on giving that hair color to anyone until Marnie came along. Tbh if I could stand having longer hair, I'd probably go for her hairstyle myself, but alas, I cannot stand having hair that long.
@wendy-comet - Despite her hair being blue, I think Marnie's favorite color is probably green or purple, depending on the day. But then again, depending on the situation I like to think that Marnie naturally has blue hair as a byproduct of said being a clone/genetic engineering, so it's not necessarily a choice she makes to have blue hair.
