ben had made plans to meet sky for coffee. it had taken him some time to get up the nerve to ask her on account of the fact that she was obviously out of his league. there was also the bit where he kinda let her believe that he was a bit more... financially well off than he actually was. ben could have set things straight after they’d met at the party, explained to her what he was doing there and the reality of his situation. but every time he’d thought about it, he questioned whether someone like sky would want to talk to him at all if she knew he was literally homeless and not the kind of guy that regularly attended industry events. and even if this wasn’t meant to be, if they would never work out on account of the fact that they were very obviously from two different worlds, ben really liked sky. she was funny, and interesting, and absolutely gorgeous and ben wanted to spend as much time getting to know her as possible. so he decided to delay telling her the truth for the time being. “hey,” he grinned when she sat down across from him at the grind. “how’ve you been? heard you went to hawaii? how was that?”

“well? what do you think?” lemon stared proudly up at the freshly-painted mural splashed across the wall in front of them. it had taken them the whole week, but it turned out great, and they couldn’t be more excited. “isn’t it neat? i think it’s my biggest project yet. the client pretty much gave me free reign as long as it was colourful. and you know me and colour.” he teased, flashing a grin at his fellow art-lover.
“i gotta admit, i had no idea how it was gonna turn out when you started, but it looks awesome,” ben complimented. ben had always appreciated how creative lemon was. he remembered when lemon had shared their art with him the first time and how their face had lit up just talking about how passionate they were. that was something ben could definitely relate to and appreciate. “you ever think about doing this full time?” he asked. “like really pursuing it?”
ben was a bit of a night owl. most of his nights after closing up shop consisted of aimlessly wandering around kingsboro and making acquaintances with the shadows that passed him in the streets. the city looked different at night. it felt different too. new york was never quiet, and some neighborhoods in kingsboro were livelier at night than they were in the day. but ben always felt a quiet sort of peace on his evening walks. but there was a loneliness too, a loneliness that sometimes was a little more than he could stand, so ben often went out of his way to meet as many new and interesting people as possible or even catch up with old friends. tonight was no different. “cigarette?” ben offered in way of greeting.

music has been a part of ben’s life for as long as he can remember. his family didn’t have much, but they always had music and that was all that mattered. growing up poor in staten island was tough on ben and his sister janie, but they were pretty happy kids all things considered. tw: death that was until both of their parents were taken from them in a fatal car accident. end of tw ben and his sister moved to brooklyn and lived with their aunt jack after that who gave them absolutely everything she could, though she found it difficult to raise two children on her own.
ben continued to pursue his interest in music, his aunt jack purchasing him his first hand-me-down drum set for ben’s 12th birthday. he was in a handful of bands in high school, though none of them were ever very good. he discovered he also had an interest in writing, specifically song writing and decided to pursue that more seriously. ben put himself through college on student loans and his job as a pizza delivery boy. though his real interest was in making it as a musician, ben knew it had been important to his parents that he graduated college. but he made a promise to himself that once he was done with school, he’d follow his dreams.
after graduating, ben quit his pizza delivery job and started working at millennium records. he’d loved the atmosphere and working with likeminded people was a refreshing change and inspired him greatly. unfortunately, working as a sales associate didn’t pay much and with his student debt hanging over his head, ben found he couldn’t afford to keep his apartment. he volunteered to work the late shifts at the record shop, closing up and sleeping in the back office, unbeknownst to his boss.
ben’s been busting his ass trying to not only be recognized as a legitimate musician, but to make music that he’s really proud of. he’s currently looking at the possibility of putting a band together as well as a way to get his foot in the door and get something going with a label.
