I asked him once if he remembered where he was when Kennedy got shot. He said he was being picked up from school (8th grade by then) by a friend’s mother – she’s the one that told them what had happened. He remembers it as a cold, grey, stormy day. One of his shoelaces had broken that morning and he had to curl his toes to keep that shoe from coming off. When she told them about the president, he started shivering and pissed his pants and it soaked down into the backseat of her Chevy station wagon. She immediately smelled it and started yelling – not only was he already overcome with gut-wrenching sorrow, he was now humiliated – so when they pulled up in front of his house he jumped out and ran, forgetting to curl his toes, and that shoe was left, never to be retrieved.
