charlotte is the new girl in town, per canon. but! she isn’t transformed into a mermaid—she was born a mermaid because! her grandmother gracie was a mermaid. it doesn’t matter that gracie wasn’t born a mermaid … after transforming, gracie’s DNA was forever changed. her children and their descendants all have a 50/50 shot at being born a mermaid. charlotte has three powers because, as a born-mermaid, she has been a mermaid the longest and—in my canon—mermaids/mermen will continue to gain and develop powers until approximately twenty years of age. speaking of powers …

charlotte accidentally burnt down the art room at her old school. she’s only sixteen, and certain powers—such as anything related to fire and heat—and very hard to control, especially when frustrated. charlotte doesn’t tell anyone it’s her fault.

Zane watches him like he's a wounded animal. Empathetic, but guarded. Pitiful. It sets Lewis's teeth on edge. He bristles under Zane's gaze. Bites down on the inside of his cheek to keep from saying something he'll regret. Quietly, Lewis reminds himself he's the one in the wrong. That he's the one who ran out of his own apartment to escape the reality of his own actions. "I made coffee," Zane says, like it's the easiest thing the world. Like they weren't having a very different conversation in this kitchen last night. "Looks like espresso is all you buy so, ah, that's what I made." "STEM Major," Lewis replies in way of explanation. "Something has to get me through Undergrad Research. Espresso and two minute noodles, it is." Zane snorts. "Where are your mugs?" The ridiculousness of the situation doesn't dawn on Lewis so much as hit him like a right hook. Jesus. Zane making coffee in his kitchen. Asking about mugs. As if last night it wasn't bourbon and bare feet and scalding truths and I miss her like blood in my veins and I hate my piece of shit dad, too and— "Top left," Lewis says, and then, "Sorry you, ugh, saw your clothes on my bedroom floor before you saw the kitchen. And sorry for running out. I ... needed some space." Zane lifts a brow. "Needed to see Bella, you mean? Your codependency is the stuff of legends. Truly."
