The academy was never quiet, not even in the night. There were always students studying, huddled up in groups beneath trees or practicing on each other on the training grounds. Vale never knew she’d long for the chatter of students, to have to push past groups of them wherever she went. It is in that quiet that she hears it, her uncle whispering to Phoebe’s mother. An alliance in the making.

It takes half a day’s journey to get out to the country, where they’ve stashed him. She wonders if he goes mad there, all by himself. Thought dead to everyone who loved him, including his lovesick wife. Her motorbike skids to a stop just up the hill from his homestead, knowing she’ll have to walk the rest of the way. It doesn’t take her very long before she’s pushing the door open without preamble. “Abraham!”
