Earthquake Experience
On Saturday June 30th, at about 8:30 PM, an 8.5 Earthquake hit Japan.
Fortunately, the epicentre was very deep and therefore caused no damage.
Unfortunately, I was in Tokyo at the time and in the event of an earthquake, trains stop for safety reasons. Literally as we were walking to out next train, we heard the announcement that there had been an earthquake and that all train lines would be temporarily stopped. We decided to wait it out and contact my host family and everyone elseās family, but our phone batteries were nearly dead. I was lucky enough that someone had a cable that I could plug into my wifi machine to charge my phone. My friend Cocona wasnāt so lucky. We went to an electronics shop to buy a cable for her. It was about 9:45 and the trains still werenāt working, and apparently I was the only one of us that was hungry as we hadnāt eaten anything since lunch. But everyone wanted to sit, so we finally found a restaurant that if we waited for, could get seats for. We waited for maybe 20 minutes and then were informed that a table had opened, but as we were minors and Japan has a curfew time, we were not allowed a seat.
I bought a salad at the station convenience store and ate it while crouched on the station ground, leaning against a wall. Finally, at maybe 10:45, the trains began running again. We crammed into the most crowded train Iāve ever been in in my life (I was pressed against people and couldnāt move if I tried). We rode a bit and transferred trains but had to wait a long time for the next train to come. When that train arrived in Yokohama, it was fairly smooth sailing. I mean, I couldnāt breathe or move for the whole ride, but at least I knew it would bring me directly to my station. After a few stops it became just a regular crowded train, vs a āmost people shoved in a small spaceā world record submission. When I arrived in Hiratsuka, I was thankful that Coconaās family drove me home, as there were no buses running at hat hour. My poor host mom who I made stay up until 2 AM greeted me at the door and we went to bed right away. Wha a crazy day.
This is so insane! I'm happy your safe though and what a story to tell!
