I don’t see people talk about abusive friends very often, so I’m gonna. It’s really hard to get people to take you seriously when you talk about it. Here’s some warning signs that I’ve personally seen, and you can add any that you know of.

1. They are hellbent on maintaining a good reputation. If you say something about them that isn’t positive, they will freak out. It doesn’t have to be bad, it just has to have even a slightly negative impact on their reputation. It sounds so dramatic, but they would rather you die than ruin their reputation, even slightly. I have literally had a friend try to push me to commit suicide, and then used suicide awareness for a reputation boost.

2. Though they have a death grip on their reputation, yours is basically unimportant to them. They will embarrass you shamelessly, especially in front of people that you want to impress. It’s to belittle you and make you think you’re small and weak. Sometimes, they’ll try to “help” you (and it will be shitty Twitter advice that’s been floating around) because they’re gracious and kind. They’ll make you feel like a child, and treat you basically like shit in front of anyone that they like more than you. They’ll also make sure you know good and well that their other friends are more important than you, so you better act right in front of them.

3. They prey on you because of you’re low self esteem. If you feel less important and want people to want to pay attention to you, it works. They’ll want to hang out with you 24/7 and do everything with you because you’re so cool. For like, two weeks. Then, they’ll toss you aside and forget about you until you’re suddenly cool again (aka, when you’ve got something they want). And, because you have low self esteem and you want that high of feeling important again, you’ll be right there waiting.

4. If you go against them, they’ll drag you through hell. You don’t even have to mention a name, but they’ll know it’s about them. Now you’re gonna pay (hopefully with your life). They’ll take something you did or said way out of context. A Spongebob quote you used is suddenly a symptom of your “out of control violence”. They’ve realized that you’re not weak and small anymore, and they’re going to try to beat you back down. And once you realize that you are, then they’ll go back to “helping you” because they’re good people, remember? They’re trying to prove to everyone that they can’t be a bad person because the real bad person is right there. How dare they try to ruin my reputation when they do bad stuff?

5. They suddenly like and do a whole lot of things that you do. Most likely, they were using you to get to that. Most of the time, these people are using you to get what they want out of you. They’ll take your favorite things, your friends, etc.

JKR’s new book announcement should not surprise you. It should not shock you. And I don’t mean that like, oh she’s been racist and horrible before so this is nothing new.

No. I mean that this is 100% intentional and reactionary. This is in direct response the backlash she got for being transphobic trash. She’s doing this because she’s digging her heels in and doubling down on her bullshit. This is PR 101, causing outrage to get people to pay attention to her.

So what we are not going to fucking do is give this woman a single fucking penny. We’re not giving her the fucking time of day. I do not want to see discourse posts in however many months’ time when the book comes out. There doesn’t need to be discourse because we fucking know already that it’s trash. This book and this author need to die with a whimper.
