If someone tells you they have a disability, please for the love of god donāt try to say you have the same difficulties, unless youāre actually disabled. You donāt, and I promise you, we hear that shit alllllll the time; it doesnāt feel like empathy, it feels like intentional ignorance.
For example, I have a pretty serious memory disability. But Iām smart and talkative and 27, so when I tell people Iām disabled, they almost never take me really seriously. They tell me āhaha, me tooā or āoh, I forget my keys all the time.ā No. Thatās not how it works for me. I have memory loss to the extent that it seriously affects my relationships and functionality. I donāt even have the same sense of time as you.
My disability makes me different from most people in crucial ways and thatās why I tell people about it. Iām not looking for you to tell me how weāre similar because 1) I know those things already because I have to and 2) thatās the precise opposite of what Iām trying to tell you, for both of our benefits.
So just donāt. If someone tells you about their disability, just acknowledge it. We know it makes you uncomfortable, but weāre telling you for a reason. So please, just listen. Itāll be way easier.
sincere question: what kind of response would you like to receive instead of forced sympathy? bc iām rlly bad at communicating w people so any help would be appreciated /o\
A sincere answer, albeit a long one.
I have chronic fatigue. I have not been well rested since the mid 1990s, aka before most people on tumblr were born. This leads to EXTREME cognitive difficulty. I need a calculator for simple addition unless both numbers are under 4. (thatās right, I need a calculator for 4+3) I am so tired that I have black spots in my vision. I am prone to just straight up collapsing. And thatās not even touching on the pain that comes with it.
When people say āoh, I had to pull an all nighter once, I get it,ā what I hear is āI think youāre exaggerating. It canāt possibly be any worse than pulling an all nighter.ā
The appropriate response is simple - show me that you understand that what Iām describing is truly above and beyond what is normal. That can take several forms - āholy shit thatās fucked!ā if swearing is your style. āMy god, I canāt even imagine,ā if itās not.
āI had to pull an all nighter once, but I couldnāt imagine going without sleep for *that* long.ā Thatās good, youāre relating it to your own experience WITHOUT crossing the line into āit canāt be worse than my experience!ā
However. (This is the important part.) Most of us donāt just announce this information randomly or for laughs. I noticed in your tags (if I read them correctly and can remember what I read correctly) that you said youāre neuroatypical. Why would you add that information? Iām guessing that it was to let people know before responding to you that you arenāt on the same page as a neurotypical. It was (Iām guessing) because you wanted people to modulate their response to you rather than holding you to the same standard as a neurotypical.
Because if you were neurotypical, I would not have interpreted your question as sincere. I would have read it as sarcastic, belittling, and patronising. But youāre not neurotypical, and so I believe you that itās a sincere question, and so Iām giving you a sincere answer.
When I tell someone Iām disabled, I do it for the same reason.
āPlease donāt be offended if I yawn while youāre talking to me, I mean you no disrespect but I have chronic fatigue.ā
āIām sorry I forgot your birthday, I have memory loss stemming from my chronic fatigue.ā
āIām sorry for asking you to do me a favour, but while itās a simple thing for you, Iām unable to do it because of my disability.ā
I tell people Iām disabled⦠Generally because I need something from them. Usually that thing is understanding. Sometimes itās slightly more practical, but thatās more of an offline interaction thing.
If someone tells you theyāre disabled, the best response is āIs there anything you need from me? Is there anything I should know?ā
Life skill
Learn to kindly but firmly say āthatās personalā.
You owe no one information about your body, your opinions, your family, your health, not even your favorite food if u dont wanna share.
A kinda creepy guy at work asks what u did on the weekend? A well-meaning relative asks abt your health problems? A friend of a friend asks about your partner? Maybe smile for a second and then say āyou know, thatās actually kinda personalā and change the subject or give a very general answer if u want.
You are entitled to privacy and to choosing who to share what with.
This is a really underrated approach to shutting down invasive questions about your illness or disability. Not only is it part of a social script (=socially acceptable), but being part of a script means they are less likely to push back or be offended by the boundary youāre setting.
Want to level it up a bit or make a point? Instead of making it sound like itās a personal topic for you, try deploying a little condescension and careful wording to imply that that person is asking a universally inappropriate question. āThatās a little personal, donāt you think?ā + the side eye can make a lot of people think twice.
Your mileage may vary on this (some people are just rude forever), but itās certainly one for the toolbox.
notes on creativity as a cycle between active production + dormant recovery. let your brain rest!
Show everyone you know.
I love all of you. Thanks for sharing this!

Suicide rates are absolutely going to continue to climb in the USA as long as our concept of āMental Healthā remains separated from material conditions. Antidepressants canāt cure poverty and alienation. They canāt cure the crushing pressure that comes with watching climate changing in real time, but feeling powerless because the government is too corrupt to care. They canāt cure the many chronic physical health conditions people go without treatment for because the US physical health system is bullshit. Always turning toward psychiatry for an answer is a perfect example of American style individualism killing people, because the problem is always said to exist in the individualās brain chemicals, and society is always innocent. As the famous quote goes āIt is no measure of health to be well adjusted to a profoundly sick society.ā
Borderline Personality Disorder has one of the highest suicide rates of all mental illnesses. Here are some things that I am certain contribute to that:
Some professionals refuse to treat BPD patients simply on the basis of that diagnosis. Without even meeting us, we are judged to be not worth treating.
Many professionals see BPD patients as theĀ āworstā, mostĀ ādreadedā type of patient. There are countless stories of mental health professionals speaking about the very idea of BPD patients in disdainful ways.
Unlike most other mental illnesses, patients with BPD are not viewed asĀ āsickā, but as bratty, manipulative, and/or ungrateful. There is a pervasive idea that we donāt try hard enough, or that we donāt want to be helped. This is a view mostly held by our families, but is encouraged by some mental health professionals.
Many professionals focus on helping our families cope with our symptoms rather than how we can cope with them. Our disorder is seen by many as an illness that effects those around us more than those with it.
10 Ways to Deal with Negative Feelings

2. Go for a walk, or exercise.
3. Do something creative.
4. Listen to your favourite music.
5. Make a list of the things youāre thankful for.
6. Take a break from your phone and social media.
7. Do something kind for yourself.
8. Do something kind for someone else.
9. Watch a funny movie.
10. Remind yourself that feelings are temporary.

If any of my followers are photosensitive, please be careful when watching The Incredibles 2
I just finished seeing the movie, and while I do not have a history of epilepsy or light-induced seizures, the movie had quite a few scenes where super intense strobe lights covered at least half of the screen for minutes at a time (I even had to close my eyes for some of it).
These scenes occur with no warning at all, and I highly advise against going to see the film in theaters if you are sensitive to intense strobe lights and I advise those who arenāt to still be cautious when seeing the film.
I did thoroughly enjoy the film and have an amazing time when watching it, but I still have a headache from the really intense scenes.
Please be careful!
I live!
I recently started posting to this blog again after *checks watch* two years of inactivity. Ā This was originally part of a school project and Iād left it behind after the semester was over, but actually? Ā I give a f*ck about destigmatizing mental illness, so Iām back with your positivity, with your educational resources, with your platform for sharing your experience as a mentally ill person.
Submissions are open.
Check out the tag #BehindTheFace and know that youāre not alone.
donāt ever be ashamed of it
Concept:
Make a horror movie about actually BEING schizophrenicā¦
ā¦and not about the schizophrenic person.
That way, people can see what we see.
Work with actual schizophrenics and get a real first-hand account of schizophrenia and make a movie about us and what we go through and why we are the way we are.
Stop making us look dangerous.
Humanize us.
Make people understand us a bit better.
I think a horror movie shown from a schizophrenicās perspective would be perfect.
Show them all the terrifying shit that we see, but they canāt.
Show them how we survive.
Show them that we are strong and capable of surviving this horror story, because we ARE!
Stop stigma, rather than creating itā¦
Howās that for an idea?
Saturday Night Live's Pete Davidson is setting the record straight on dating with Borderline Personality Disorder
As he says, Mental illness isnāt something to joke about. People with them arenāt toxic just because they are mentally ill.Ā
The important thing for someone with a mental illness is to accept it, admit it and receive treatment-usually ongoing treatment. And there is NOTHING WRONG WITH THAT.
STOP THE STIGMA

āAlthough stigmatizing attitudes are not limited to mental illness, the public seems to disapprove persons with psychiatric disabilities significantly more than persons with related conditions such as physical illness. Severe mental illness has been likened to drug addiction, prostitution, and criminality m. Unlike physical disabilities, persons with mental illness are perceived by the public to be in control of their disabilities and responsible for causing them. Furthermore, research respondents are less likely to pity persons with mental illness, instead reacting to psychiatric disability with anger and believing that help is not deserved.ā

OCD
I hate people that say they have OCD just because they like things neat.Ā Like, are you serious? Do you even know what having OCD means?
Ā It means that you have to do things over and over until they feel right.
Ā It means that if you feel like you came into contact with something harmful you have to wash over and over again, even if your skin becomes raw.
It means that you realize all of your compulsions and rituals are dumb, but you have to do them anyways.
It means that you have thoughts you canāt control.
It means believing that you have to do something a certain amount of times or a certain way so nothing bad happens, even though you know nothing bad will happen either way.
It means taking sometimes hours to successfully complete a ritual just so you donāt have to worry for a little while.
It means that you have a real mental illness that you donāt make up, unlike people who believe they have it simply because they have to have a neat desk.
I have OCD and Iām really messy. Itās a debilitating disease, not a useful strength. Comparing being tidy, an admirable habit, to suffering from a disease that can be fatal is really awful.
I keep things clean/safe according to my (vague, constantly shifting) definition of what is dirty/contaminated/harmful, which, as Iām mentally ill, doesnāt exactly line up with reality. I feel much more vulnerable in other peopleās showhomes than in my own āsafeā pigsty.
Itās about control. Itās an anxiety disorder. Itās to organisation and hygiene what anorexia is to discipline and temperance. It is a deadly disease and not a joke.
