When people think about space science, they picture rockets and astronauts.
Almost nobody thinks about a chemistry lab in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania.
But in the late 1970s and early 1980s, that lab changed how NASA thought about what space was for.
At Lehigh University, chemical engineer Mohamed El Aasser ran a series of experiments that turned the Space Shuttle into a floating materials laboratory. By using microgravity, his team produced some of the most uniform polymer particles ever created. Particles so precise they could not be made on Earth.
Those tiny spheres helped prove something radical at the time. Space was not just a place to visit. It was a place to manufacture things differently.
In 1984, El Aasser’s work earned a shared NASA Inventor of the Year Award. But outside scientific circles, almost no one knows this story.
