i think this might be the best beforan fic thingy ive read i love u keep up the gr8 work friend
((aaa thank you! 0v0 Seeing this has really made my week and I'm glad you like it. Â I hope I don't disappoint!))
so, how exactly are trolls in this au chosen to be culled? and how does breeding work? are there drones or nah?
Culling
In the early days of the species, culling wasn't a social practice but simply something that happened whenever there was conflict... or boredom. Â When trolls began to form established territories, governments, and distinct cultures, culling became a particular practice closely related to what we would call eugenics. Â The weak, ill, and other perceived unsavory individuals were killed, much like they were on Alternia. Â
On Unwanted, Sweaty Caretakers [FIC]
This is the first of several stand-alone one-shots planned to help expand on what will be seen in the future main fic. Â This one expands a bit on Nepeta and Equiusâ relationship with one another in the beginning and takes place before the first chapter of the fic, so itâs a bit of a prequel of sorts. Â Questions regarding anything in the fic as well as constructive criticism are always welcome!
You can find the fic on AO3 as well here.Â
Summary: Nepeta is tired of Equiusâ condescending coddling, but more than that, sheâs angry at the deeper cultural issues at the root of it all. Â Someday sheâll prove him and everyone like him wrong.

You say IC asks are accepted too, so... @Nepeta, what's the city like? How is it comparing to what you thought it'd be like?
:33 < its been⌠something!
:33 < its definitely exciting and im learning a lot
:33 < exploring a city is a lot diffurent than exploring a forest thats fur sure
:33 < to be honest i get a little nervous sometimes
:33 < everywhere you look its jampacked with trolls! ive never seen so many gathered in one place befur.
:33 < and i miss the forest back home a lot. Â not a lot of trees for climbing or antlerbeasts to chase fur fun in the city
:33 < i used to spend a lot of time watching nature but now its mostly watching other trolls. i like making up stories for the people i see a lot and its really fun.
xoo < ive noticed that most people are just as backwards and awful sometimes as back home though!
:33 < like with how ive brought pounce along
:33 < other lowbloods call me a wiggler for bringing her and highbloods coo at me like i am one just because my blood is greener than theirs
:33 < im used to the way highbloods are but i kind of hopedâŚÂ
:33 < i guess i thought the city wouldnt be as⌠traditional i guess
:33 < about blood stuff and culling i mean
:(( < so thats purretty disappointing
x33 < but just wait until i pass my entrance exam!! i cant wait to see the look on equiusâ face and the face of every highblood ever when i get in
:33 < im a strong independent huntress who dont need no culler
xoo < maybe then theyll see that
how does the academy work? who's in charge? what happens there? who are some of the other students? // what are some of the notable places and buildings in the city?
The Academy is a general name used for a number Empire-funded, Empire-run training schools for those wishing to enter a variety of fields, including:
the limited number of basic military fields Beforus has for intergalactic defense,
civil defense fields, which includes theraspartans,
law and politics, such as legislacerators (which are quite different on Beforus!)
The only way one can become either a) more than an enlisted man or entry-level invdividual in general fields or b) join highly sought-after divisions such as the theraspartans. Â
The Academy has 1 main campus and 6 satellite campuses across Beforus, each of which specialize in one or several fields, but not all. Â Each has varying levels of desirability based on where they are located and what they specialize in. Â Also, how challenging it is to enroll differs according to which campus you are trying to enter and for which field.
Nepeta is attempting to enlist in the main campus in the theraspartan program. Â Both her campus of choice and desired program are very, very selective and have difficult entrance exams.
Because of Beforusâ culture regarding blood, it is a rare occurrence for lowbloods to make it into the theraspartan program.  Midbloods also have a particularly difficult time. Â
The first part of Beforanbound will deal with Nepetaâs move to the city and her entrance exams, which will expand a lot on the general workings of the Academy and the basics of Beforan life!
â-
Nepetaâs noteworthy classmates include Karkat, a fellow theraspartan hopeful and Terezi, who is enrolling in the legislacerator program*.  Others have yet to be decided.
*Terezi is attending the main campus, which does not specialize in the legislacerator program.  In fact, the main campusâ legislacerator program is considered subpar and considered by the students to be where the ârejectsâ are sent.  This is because of Tereziâs eyesight, which is also a thing for her  Beforan counterpart and will be expanded upon later.
ââ
The Academy is welcoming a new leader this year - Eridan Ampora.  It was quite a shock to the Empire when he stepped down from his position as the Empireâs top naval explorer and Empress Feferiâs personal theraspartan.  Rumors have it that she may have forced him to step down, but publicly he has maintained that this was a personal choice of his.  Some baloney about wanting to begin giving more to the newer generations and finally fulfilling his highblood duty to care for those beneath him. Â
ââ
Notable places of significance to the story include:
the Academy,
the Bowl, Beforanâs largest urban market center,Â
The Hall of Reckoning, Beforusâ historic and oldest still-standing courts,
one of Empress Feferiâs many humble and rarely-used homes; she has one in each major city, but as she spends much of her time at sea or on intergalactic ambassadorial trips, they are generally used as event halls and locations for big political meetings

will there be purrbeasts
Of course! Â Nepetaâs lusus is still good olâ Pounce, who may or may not (hint: she will) travel with her to the city. Â Itâs a huge social faux pas, sure, but when has Nepeta ever cared about that? Â She canât just leave Pounce behind with all those sweaty Zahhaks, thatâs for sure!

Beforus is an image of peace and prosperity. Empress Feferi's redefinition of culling has taken hold and lowbloods live under the care and nurturing of the higher bloods. That's the idea, at least, but can such an ideal ever truly work in practice? Â
Nepeta, a young troll living in the territory and under the care of the Zahhak clan, is tired of being treated as an incapable wiggler. Â She's independent and defiant and she'll be damned if she has to be smothered and live a restricted life any longer. That's why she's heading off to the bustling city. Â
There, she'll join the Academy - a school for those wishing to become a highly-honored theraspartan. Â They're the Empire's go-to force for tracking down rogue trolls and papping them into submission. Â
But things are never as easy as planned. Â Life in the city, training, making friends and rivals - it all must be pushed to the backburner when she begins to unravel a surprising plan for empire sabotage. Â Can Nepeta and friends aid in the upcoming political struggle before it erupts in civil war? Â And in what other ways will they change the face of Beforus before it's all done?
Beforanbound is in the development stages and needs your help! Please send in questions you have about the plot, setting, and anything else you're curious about to help me worldbuild.

"Equius! Â That's a week's worth of food you just scared off, you idiot!"Â
In which Beforan Equius always finds a way to follow her and ruin her hunts and Beforan Nepeta is sick and tired of his coddling.
I'll color this and put in a proper background someday. When I learn how to do either without it being complete shit.

Sketching out ideas for Empress Feferi's outfit. Â I want a more casual look for her and this is what I've tentatively decided on.
karneptier asked you:
are clan/guild leaders chosen by the empress or by any other means such as rank and blood color?
Most clans and guilds are very old, dating back to the time from before Feferi was empress. Â As the empire grew and became what it is today, the powerful tribes and clans from yesteryear just naturally took the spots in society that they have. Â
Each clan/guild has its own method of choosing its leaders among other unique traditions.
Clan and guild members are more often than not mid to highblood, depending on the region of Beforus you find yourself in. Most groups tend to be blood color specific, so to be an official part of the clan you have to have that blood color or else be an extraordinary case. Â
For instance, Nepeta and Equius live in the same estate run by the same clan. Â Equius is an apprentice to one of that clan's leaders and is therefore a member of the clan. Â Nepeta, as a lower blood, is not; she is simply one of the many lower-blooded trolls living in the clan's estate.Â
There also exist guilds/clans in the cities who do not possess estates. Â They might possess some property of some sort and hold some measure of power, but they lack the mass of land necessary to form an estate. Â
It is also possible for new clans/guilds to form. Â Technically, any highblood wanting to can form their own and even create their own estate, provided they have the funds to buy large amounts of land and build on it. Â Given the competitive nature that often takes between existing estates and just how much work running an estate is, this is uncommon. Most land has already been snatched up, anyway. Â It's generally considered easier to just join an existing clan/guild that you are eligible to join.

Anonymous asked you:
are there different countries or provinces in beforus
Yes! First, certain strategical areas and large cities are considered government lands. Â Most everywhere else is split up into territories run by clans or guilds of highbloods (and their lowblood charges). Â Unclaimed land is typically uninhabitable areas or extremely rural areas no clan or guild has yet claimed. Â
Clans and guilds can create laws for their estates, choose who may live there (and in the case of lowbloods, how they live), so long as it doesn't go against any Empire law. Â
Although the system was created to help with the culling (coddling) of lowbloods, there are many flaws, some of which are discussed here.
Anonymous asked you:
are the beforans more peaceful or do they still conquer distant planets
The Beforans are vastly more peaceful than their Alternian counterparts.
First and foremost, without Doc Scratch's influence, trolls are held more socially and legally responsible for violent behavior. Â In fact, what was considered "natural" violent tendencies on Alternia are deeply frowned at. Â More capricious individuals, those that tend to go rogue most often, are taken care of by theraspartans or else put in jail. Â (Beforus very recently did away with their death penalty to much controversy).
They haven't quite achieved the level of space travel Alternia accomplished at a similar point in time, as they weren't motivated by a power- and destruction-hungry leader as Alternia was. Â So, they have not traveled as far as their Alternian opposites have. Â The other planets and species they have visited and met, however, often end in an alliance of some sort if they find similarly intelligent species - and they rarely do. Â Again, they haven't traveled that far yet, and so the instances in which they met similarly advanced species are low.
In a less savory outcome, Beforus applies a little bit of force to take a distant planet or galaxy under its wing under the pretense that they are helping them. Â With Feferi as empress, it may very well be that she honestly believes she is bettering these distant places and species by colonizing them. Â
This comes with the usual things you can associate with colonization from even human history - loss of the natural culture and peoples, for example. Â It's important to keep in mind that not everyone has as honest intentions as the Empress herself, too, so even in peacefully-acquired colonies, there is still much to be desired in the trolls' treatment of taken planet and peoples. Â Individuals, especially so far from their home planet and home laws, are still capable of doing horrible things when they're away from the watchful eye of their benevolent Empress. Â All of this can be considered less than peaceful interactions, but they are still not outright as destructive and violent as Alternians.
(As a result of not destroying the planets they have reached, Beforus' knowledge and technology has advanced much more quickly than Alternia's, and therefore the development of Beforan society has occurred much faster as well. Â Not committing genocide on every planet they've reached does wonders in acquiring new wisdom.
For instance, large cities and marketplaces developed on Beforus long before they did on Alternia. Â Communications technology such as an internet-type system and programs like Trollian already exist, despite Beforanbound taking place in a time equivalent to Alternia's Sufferer era.)
In a nutshell: yes, they are far more peaceful in that they are not as overtly violent, but they still have their faults and there are always individuals or groups who would do harm to others no matter what society they are from.

Lusii, wigglers, and young trolls
karneptier asked you:
what happen to the lusi, are the wild variants like wild animals while the butler class of lusi are seen as pets?
Lusii in this era of Beforus fill a role very similar to the Lusii in Alternia, but to a lesser degree. While each troll is picked by a lusus in wigglerhood, there is not as much emphasis on the lusus raising the young troll. Â In a sense, they are more like pets - they serve to teach young trolls responsibility, especially highbloods that will someday have to care for their future clan's lowbloods. Â
Young highbloods are given to relying more upon their lusii than their lowblood peers. Â This is because lowbloods are often culled (coddled, by Empress Feferi's definition) during wigglerhood, and therefore can rely on older troll guardians to provide for them in a way similar to human parentage. Â The higher a troll's blood, the less chance there is of this occuring, however, hence highbloods' deeper reliance on lusii to care from them.
One complaint from social justice groups is that this practice creates the sense that young trolls are pets, and that complaint isn't unfounded. Â It is often the case that relatively young highbloods lose interest in the wigglers they've culled after the novelty has worn off. Â Fortunately, once a highblood has culled a lower caste troll, that troll is part of the highblood's estate and cannot be abandoned. Â Therefore, the highblood must still care for and provide for the young troll, even if their special interest in any one troll has waned.
Another problem that arises given the nature of Beforan society is that, even into and past adulthood, lowbloods are often treated as dependents that must still be cared for well beyond what is necessary.
Read a bit more about such problems with the estate system here.

Anonymous asked you:
what is vriska's role?
At this point, nothing is planned for Vriska, but as I work out the details of the plot, I might need to include her in the future - perhaps as an ally among the highbloods? Â For now, she'll only be present in mentions or maybe not at all.
Now is as good a time as any to say that not all of the trolls will play a major role. Â Some might not even be alive during the same time period as Karkat, Nepeta, and Equius or might only be present off-screen. Â The characters that currently fall into this category are Vriska, Terezi, Eridan, Tavros, and Aradia.Â
