On this day in music history: February 5, 1979 - “Spirits Having Flown”, the fifteenth studio album by the Bee Gees is released. Produced by the Bee Gees, Albhy Galuten and Karl Richardson, it is recorded at Criteria Studios in Miami, FL from March - November 1978. The album is the bands’ first release following the enormous success of the “Saturday Night Fever” soundtrack. Beginning the sessions in midst of their dominance of the charts, they consciously decide not to repeat what they have done previously. The album is musically more complex and ambitious than their previous work, having a more straight ahead pop and R&B influenced sound, rather than the disco flavored sound of the “Fever” tracks. It spins off three chart topping pop singles including “Too Much Heaven” (#1 Pop), “Tragedy” (#1 Pop), and “Love You Inside Out” (#1 Pop). The brothers also undertake a major world tour in support of the album later in the year. Originally released on CD in the mid 80’s, it is remastered and reissued three times, the first time in 2006, and again 2013 and in 2015 as part of the box set “Bee Gees: 1974 - 1979”. “Spirits Having Flown” spends six weeks (non-consecutive) number one on the Billboard Top 200, and is certified 3x Platinum in the US by the RIAA.

On this day in music history: April 24, 2001 - “This Is Where I Came In”, the twenty second studio album by the Bee Gees is released. Produced by the Bee Gees and Peter-John Vettese, it is recorded at Middle Ear Studio in Miami Beach, FL and Area 21 in London circa 1999 - 2000. The groups first album since “Still Waters” four years before, it features lead vocals by all three brothers, and is the final Bee Gees album before Maurice Gibb’s death in 2003. A critical and commercial success in both the US and UK, it is further bolstered by a memorable live performance on the A&E concert series “Live By Request”. “This Is Where I Came In” peaks at number six on the UK album chart, number sixteen on the Billboard Top 200, and is certified Gold in the US by the RIAA.

Makers of history, and musical mystery…the ever loved and never ending Bee Gees
