am i being too harsh??? am i being too pissy about this i don't know. i want to be proven wrong i want the book to be hitting. it just isn't.
why is everything such a nothing. why does nothing become anything. learning about alex, dom thinking about hanging from a corpse, getting the backstory of dom having to catch his son's dead boyfriend as he's cut down from the noose, all of that, rowan finding his grave, only for the backstory to just. well. it just. it doesn't hit it just is. it's not that it isn't sad, it's just it falls so flat for me. maybe it happens too quickly, maybe it's that we don't get to know alex or tom or naija, but it just didn't hit me that hard. i can see where it's supposed to hit, i can maybe make it into something for myself, but just reading it i'm left feeling like okay. so. what's next? and that's not a good feeling to have after all that lmao
i am enjoying the book, i like her writing style and mostly like her characters and the settings is banging, but there is a feeling like the plot is almost just a waiting game. nobody really Does anything, even though they're all doing things, it just feels like it's passing the time. they know they're gonna be there for x weeks and they can't get off the island before that so the only thing to do is chores. and we learn more about the characters constantly and their backstories and motivations and we drop suspicious hints, but there is a distinct lack of forward momentum. and maybe that's purposeful, idk, but it has become very noticeable
well she just found her missing husband's belongings under a secret trapdoor so hopefully this creates some motivation for her to actually act and not just hang out doing chores and making penguin sculptures. maybe time to figure out what actually happened and why everyone else is just gone

stop looking at the water running down his nose and imagining putting your tongue to his skin. i am not being heterophobic but this developing romance is so nothing to me as to detract from the narrative. the author is going so hard on them ~noticing~ each other and their blooming attraction but i just don't care, i don't buy it! and i know she can do instalove because she did in migrations and i did enjoy that. maybe i just like it as backstory and in a fairytale kind of way. instalove really is the love of fairytales isn't it. it doesn't work in a realistic grim future setting, and especially when i don't feel that this love serves any purpose. they could just be distrustful of each other, disagree about hope and the future and building things and death and all that, and then grow to respect and understand each other, without needing to be in love about it. if anything the in love part kind of cheapens it for me. i don't want to be one of those people who act as though sexuality cheapens a connection, i mean more that if the push for them to grow closer is wanting to fuck than that's boring to me. this book would be infinitely more appealing to me if there wasn't a love story in it :/
ALSO all the moments of like noticing and attraction come at the end of scenes together, which does not successfully punctuate an interaction with their burgeoning attraction, rather it feels extremely tacked on and forced. it isn't part of a natural relationship development, it's so extremely painfully an add on and i hate it

okay well i Do Not trust orly. fucker moved to this island when he was what, one? and he loves the seed vault more than anyone and is upset it's shutting down and the seeds are being moved off the island and now he's relieved rowan can't go because the radio is conveniently broken. i don't trust this little fool and his still unknown motivations
feel like the book wants me to suspect dom killed hank so obviously that's not what happened. unless That's what the book wants me to think! man idk. someone killed someone and orly broke the radio (or not. but that's my current assumption lol)

started wild dark shore today. yes i am still in the mood for romance and yes the weather has been really summery recently so it's not really the vibe for sea battered storm wrecked remote islands buuuuuut i am out of romances. and also the weather is gonna turn real rainy next week so i think maybe it will be the vibe then. also i need to read this at some point and i really fucked with my reading experiences with charlotte mcchonaghy's other books so i am crossing my fingers this one is a ride as well
aww no i'm being too harsh, i actually did really like that ending<3 laura accepting that beth loves charlie and isn't going to love her that way, affirming that she loved beth and she knows herself now and knows she won't love a man that way. leaving to be herself and being grateful to beth for giving her this first experience as something safe and happy so she wasn't frightened to learn she's a lesbian. i think that's beautiful. yes i obviously would've preferred the two of them together but i do love that it ends with laura reaffirming her own sexuality and beth also feeling grateful for what they had. it wasn't wrong and it wasn't a mistake just because they got different things from it and weren't going to end up together. it's nice! it's a happy way to end with the two of them not together, and i do see why it touched so many people. if the women can't be together they can at least part in mutual understanding of themselves and each other. it was lovely<3
and now beth is explicitly in love with charlie but still with laura but she doesn't love laura and she's just with her to not hurt laura's feelings and for a bit of fun. it is an interesting dynamic, again it's just not what i really was expecting or wanting
but also this was just the reality of the time. same as with spring fire, women had to look past the suggestive covers with halfnaked women and read around the writing that still has the conclusion be that women should be with men, to find what they were looking for. i'm really just privileged that i can look at this story and think that's not what i want and i can get what i want a myriad of other places
i think it's also that what other books i've read from the past have been quite different from this. but then again i haven't read this genre before so i just have to reorient myself. pulpy lesbian fiction is quite different from what i was expecting lol. way more men getting involved and way more sororities (girl who's read two lesbian pulp books) (no that's not true, i did know to expect sororities). it's probably just me that was wanting kinda steamy lesbian romances and instead got a lot of dating men. not that spring fire and odd girl out are identical, in fact apart from both being roommates at a sorority they're quite different, i just am a little miffed i'm reading so much about men lol
for a lesbian novel there's a whole lotta this one guy in it.
like seriously. why is charlie and his and beth's relationship such a feature? it's the 50s and i don't yet know how the author is gonna solve the trick of the girls not ending up together but right now it seems that's solved already with beth just being really into charlie, but that makes me wonder why this book was so well received by lesbians? maybe i'm judging too harshly and too quickly, and i have liked laura and her feelings for beth a lot. i just wasn't expecting there to be really so much of beth going out with charlie abs fighting her feelings for charlie
i guess i am being harsh, i don't know, the author has made a really complicated messy and kind of compelling dynamic with beth feeling torn between charlie and laura and wondering if she owes her feelings for charlie to laura awakening something in her and feeling that she is betraying laura and has somehow been using her. it is complicated, it's not without interest. it's just that that wasn't what i was expecting or wanting lol
