get to know adam bete :
When Adam was only about seven years old his mother passed, falling ill and simply never recovering. It was a fast process, one that no one had seen coming and before they even fully knew what was wrong she was gone. It was hard on both Adam and his father. Gone were the days of love and warmth that used to fill the Bete house. Instead his father pulled away from his son, became far more harsh and raised his expectations on just about everything.
Many decades ago the small family farm that used to be run by his however many greats grandparents was turned into a much bigger business, one that would eventually become the islandâs main source of food production. And over the years the family members stopped working on the farms themselves, instead hiring out others to do the manual labor while the Betes focused on the business side of things.
It was expected that Adam would follow in with the family business - so thatâs what he did. He mostly coasted through high school and college giving little to no effort in his work thanks to his family name. But that didnât mean he wasnât smart - he understood everything that was going on around him, and knew even better that he could still get just the same grade by pulling the weight of the Bete name as he would if he actually tried. So why would he bother actually doing the work?
That same amount of motivation stuck with him after college as well, when he was officially put in charge of one of the family restaurants. While technically itâs his name on everything and the majority of the credit for its success (or the blame for its failure) goes to Adam⌠almost all of the actual work is done by others. Specifically his two best friends Claude and Blaise.
His life was great as far as Adam was concerned. He had a solid job that required minimal effort, he got to work alongside his best friends, and he was dating the most amazing woman in the world. It was almost funny, how different he was around Belle compared to so many other people in his life. But there was just something about her that brought out the absolute best in him, that made Adam want to be a better man, to go after what he really wanted instead of just following along with his fatherâs orders and expectations.
Perhaps if Belle had been there the night of the party and the storm, things would have gone differently. But as it was, she had stayed behind, and when a haggard old woman approached the estate looking for shelter, Adam turned her away. And thus he, and everyone who worked alongside him, were cursed.
For Adam the curse only really affects him three days a month - during the full moon and the days that cap it. Each night of the full moon, he turns into a beast. A literal, animalistic monster. During these times he tends to run around wild within the enchanted forest - praying not to be caught by anyone stupid enough to be running in the woods and hunting down the more dangerous creatures that terrorize the animals that live within the trees.
The other impact of the curse has been quite harder to handle. Not that Adam enjoys turning into a beast three times a month - but at least he can pretend it doesnât exist the rest of the days. The second part, however, he canât simply ignore. For Belleâs entire memory of him was stripped away. The next day after the party when he came to her home to explain what had happened, she had no recollection of who he even was.
Perhaps it may have been easy to simply try to win her over again, to reintroduce himself and just start over fresh. But who was to say she wouldnât just forget him again once they grew closer? Adam had no clue how this curse would work. And he didnât have it in him to take that heartbreak over and over again. And even besides that, he was quite literally a beast now - some kind of monster that she could do far, far better than. So he let her go. Or at least, he let her go as best as he could. They still do talk and are friendly with one another, but Adam does his best to keep it from ever getting further than that - for both their sakes.
Never wanted to be a part of the family business - he was far more interested in politics and trying to make a difference when he was younger. But his father shot that dream down and convinced him that it was futile. There was also the heavy amount of guilt that was placed upon him that if he didnât continue with the family legacy, it would die with him and was that something he really wanted to have to bear? To know that he was the one that destroyed and ended the empire his family had worked so hard to build? So in the end, business won out. At the moment heâs only in charge of the restaurant - but itâs known that eventually he will be taking over the rest of the companyâs assets as well.
A grumpy gills.
