More context, I work in a library. I see every single day how willingly people will acknowledge that Joanne sucks ass and then will still make HP jokes, read the books/watch the movies every year, and recommend the series to new youth readers. People are doing this because they don't care enough about the issue to consider the widely available alternatives. It's really a matter of people choosing their own comfort over being actively critical

Someone responded to my comment with:

And this bewildered me, because I cannot fathom how people still have this mindset about things. Like, what do you mean "we live in times where almost nothing is being created," my dude?????

My response was:

And I am so for real about this. That mindset of theirs is exactly why things like Harry Potter are still being evangelized. It's why people like Kanye West are able to make a comeback after vehemently antisemitic and racist comments for years. It's why someone like Joe Rogan can drop racial slurs, spread misinformation, and back someone like Donald Trump, and still have a massive following. There are other podcasts. There are other high production rappers. There are other kids books about magic.

People are just not doing their due diligence and looking for the alternatives. They're not willing to let go of their white-knuckle nostalgia and admit that they can let something go to try something new, underrepresented, or different.

I am begging people to not only stop supporting Rowling and the HP series, but also to consider how many other incredibly toxic creators, artists, and celebrities they're supporting on the daily because they think no one else is making stuff that they'll like.

Don't like the mass media force feed you! (Also, go donate to Amnesty International if you have the funds.)
