'Flora' + 'Overgrown'
Everyone's favorite overgrown bloodflower
'Discovery' + 'Legacy'
The Chozo Searcher
We don't know much about her, but we know she was the first one on Elysia to discover Phaaze, and that she wore some impressive sleeves.
Scavenger's Reign is out on Netflix TODAY! It's a gorgeous, thoughtful, mature, and wildly creative show about survivors marooned on an untamed alien planet, and it has instantly become one of my all-time favorite pieces of sci-fi.
If you have any interest in science fiction at all and are geographically capable of doing so, I am BEGGING you to watch it. The first season stands alone as a beautiful piece of storytelling, but I am so curious to see where it would go with a second season.
PSA: Scavengers Reign is leaving Netflix after May 30, 2026, so if you were waiting to watch it, this is your sign to do it now! Afterwards it will only be available via HBO.

now, i did overall really love metroid prime 4, but one thing i don't understand why they removed from the earlier prime games is the transparency of samus' visor. In every prime game so far (aside from the ds spinoffs), you've been able to see a sliver of Samus' face through her visor in the cutscenes. Even Dread had this feature, but for some reason, in MP4, her visor is totally opaque the entire time.
A lot of people took issue to her silence and stoicism in the face of all the talkative people around her, but i feel like this issue would've been much less apparent to a lot of people if they'd just allowed us to see her eyes and have her emote a little bit in the cutscenes. this is a feature they've had since the gamecube era, come on now.
(honestly the fact that even her nods and body-language acknowledgements are so slight as to be barely perceptible if you're not paying attention is weird, too. It's like they were actively trying to make her give off as little emotion as possible. just an odd choice all-round, considering the colourful nature of the supporting cast. Though it does support the whole 'samus is socially awkward' headcanon which i enjoy thoroughly)
Idk, it's not really an issue, more of just a little nitpick, but as much as i love the game, it certainly has a lot of things that prompt nitpicking. i'm choosing to blame it largely on the development hell it went through, and hoping that whatever studio picks up the next installment gets it right (as much as i love Retro Studio's work, they've been clear about not really wanting to work on the prime games past the first one. even this one was dumped in their laps to fix after bandai namco bungled it)
Agreed! What's especially strange about this is that all of Samus' models in MP4 actually have a face behind the visor- it's just not visible because the visor is opaque.
As far as I'm aware, the only way this can be seen in-game is through brief flashes during the save animation, where a rendering issue with overlapping transparency lets you see past the visor.
Kind of crazy Metroid datamining find: There are over 30 minutes of unused NPC banter in MP4! All of this would seemingly have played at Base Camp. Unused dialogue starts at 7:38, everything before that is accessible in-game.
Notable highlights:
Armstrong has a dog
Duke's wife and daughter have names
MacKenzie secretly set up booby traps around the base
VUE gives good cooking advice
Tokabi's rifle is named Sunbeam
Haven't seen anyone post about it here. Turns out in the credits of Metroid Prime Federation Force, General Alex Miles has a face modeled under their helmet. Seemingly, the visor in that scene was meant to be transparent, but isn't for whatever reason, and this was only discovered Now, 9 years later, because of an emulator bug.
@bearborg was able to datamine and confirm this, but original findings from JP on Reddit
Some have theorized that this may tie in to a Sylux reveal, but honestly I have trouble seeing Alex as connected too heavily to Sylux - though that may be biased by my own theories. What do y'all think?
There's also an unbugged version of the picture (source here), this is pretty interesting to see!
I'm pretty certain that Bluesky post is just sharing a screencap of this video I recorded, but yeah, very interesting! Federation Force has been largely unexplored from a datamining perspective, so I always wondered if there was anything interesting hiding inside, but I definitely wasn't expecting a full-on "Samus is a girl" twist. Given how complete the assets are, I'm still curious if the game's data might have more info about how this reveal would have been unlocked.
Metroid Prime 3 : The Uterine Cancer Game
as promised / threatened, i'll finally write an explanation for why i Insist On Calling It That
summary -- metroid prime 3 features substantial symbolism of cancer and reproduction that comes together to create a tokophobic nightmare where "you" are forced to give birth against your will to something which threatens to consume and sicken everything you love. it is motherhood at its most fatal, with something inside you draining your life, and leaving you isolated.
this fits into the tradition of metroid being a game series about femininity, in this case exploring the anxiety surrounding birth and the mother's health after the fact. through the metaphorical nature of the "wombs" involved, it explores the topic while also rejecting the narrative that femininity is defined by a literal capacity to give birth.
let's get into it, shall we?
Forgive me fellow netizen, for I have yes-and’d. Ramblings have been rambled.
I hope my brain hasn’t made me glaze over anything and repeat anything you’ve said because I assure you my soul was locked in. I’ve been thinking (and, when rarely promoted, saying) something like this for years.
What first made me think twice about the typical read of Samus simply mutating into Dark Samus was a log on the Space Pirate Homeworld that talks about the dark seed that’s growing within her.
NO. NO. …except, yes?
YES YES YES WHAT A GOOD ADDITION!! I NEVER KNEW ABOUT THAT TRAILER!!! wowza, that really adds to it, doesn't it? i really wish they found a way to sneak that in, that the transformation is pleasurable, because man does it feel so much more creepy that way. and even better, parallels pregnancy all the more, where your mind is flooded with pleasure response to smooth over the fact your body is being changed painfully to cultivate what is growing within you.
i also want to call attention to the fact that, as you so insightfully pointed out, yes, the Galactic Federation's response is: wow this is such a miracle isn't it??? aren't you happy? aren't you glad we did this procedure on you while you were in a coma? it's 100% safe, nothing can go wrong!
and then the first phazon overload happens and it's like 😬 whoopsie-doodle. "we are sorry", as the aurora unit says when she realizes that the PED actually put you in harm's way. now how about THAT connection to natalism... everyone insisting it's such a great and amazing thing, when, as you pointed out, the hazard scan (the stand-in for science, maybe?) is like HEY THIS IS BAD!!!
man i hadn't made that connection, well observed. and you're so right, the response that we / Samus take to all of this, is, FUCK THIS im going to do what i want, which is to abort that thing, and so promptly she kills the leviathan infant and then Dark Sammy and sure enough, the tumor / embryo shrinks to nothing, and she's healed.
thanks again for your thoughts, really good stuff

open question to metroid mutuals... ive never really dived into the internals of the prime games outside of sifting through extracted audio and texture files...
so my question is: how is level geometry stored? is there a fairly standard container / filetype?
basically, im wondering if there's a way to get the level geometry for frigate orpheon as a mesh file so i can do something fun with it in a radiation physics simulation software
bonus question: do you think the reactor is fission, fusion, matter-antimatter, or something else? i already have my opinion, but curious what others think

All 3 games in the Prime Trilogy use a file format called MREA, short for Metroid Area. This wiki has extensive details on the file format itself if you're interested in parsing the raw data, but I'd recommend against that since there are some decent tools available (see below).

Good news: There is! Not-as-good news: The project is currently dormant and hasn't been updated in a while, so getting it set up will take some work.
HECL is a tool that converts files from all 3 Prime games into Blender files (or human-readable text), but as you might notice, there are no publicly viewable releases of the tool anymore.
The Metroid Prime modding community has pretty firmly fallen to the Discord side of the Discord/forums war, so I would recommend joining their server and checking out the #metaforce-chat channel. There's a pinned message there with an archived HECL build and some info on setting it up, and the community is very willing to help if you run into any issues.
You'll need about 4 GB of free space, since HECL extracts the entire game rather than specific assets, and I'd recommend setting it up close to the root of your hard drive, because it creates a lot of sub-folders and sometimes runs into issues with path-length limits.
bonus question: do you think the reactor is fission, fusion, matter-antimatter, or something else? i already have my opinion, but curious what others think
I am super ignorant when it comes to real-life physics, but I guess I had assumed fusion? Just cause that seems slightly futuristic, but also still capable of emitting deadly radiation. It also seems to be powered by a bunch of big orange crystals, though, and I have no idea how those fit into any real world reactor technology... Maybe they got them from Xen.
Path is blocked, but for how long?
everyone's too caught up in the underwater frigate orpheon MAIN theme (you know with the piano) to notice that the intro track has an electric light hum that's synced to the beat
this one
At Full Power
Oh, this is super gorgeous! Love the recreation of the Super Metroid Nintendo Power pose!
For those curious, I believe all the Chozo text is made up of repetitions of these words: "beakless", "calling", "wingless", "soaring".
The Botanica in SkyTown, Elysia. Because what's cooler than an ancient floating alien steampunk facility? One with trees growing throughout an entire section of it
