Do you remember when the IRS called me your caretaker? It's like that, but instead of one member of a species taking care of one of its own, having a "pet" is when a member of one species takes care of one of another species (one often seen as "less capable" by the first species), often with the implication of ownership.
That's... not a good thing, and kind of treads on forbidden waters, mech. There are real, messed-up situations where people haven't even had a choice in their autonomy, and I'd never want to promote anything even similar to that sort of deal.
