The Bangsamoro Commission for the Preservation of Cultural Heritage - Lanao del Sur joins the celebration of the 6th Bangsamoro Foundation Day.

𝗦𝗮𝗹𝗮𝗺𝗮𝘁, 𝗕𝗔𝗥𝗠𝗠:

In celebration of the 6th Bangsamoro Foundation Day, a Focus Group Discussion was held on January 22, 2025 (Rajab 22, 1446H) at Capitol Hill, Awar Street, East Basak, Marawi City. This meaningful event brought together distinguished guests to discuss the progress and challenges of the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (BARMM) during its six-year transition.

Notable guests included Prof. Ayesha Merdeka M. Alonto, Executive Assistant at the Office of Information, Press and Publications of Mindanao State University - Main Campus and daughter of the late Moro revolutionary leader Datu Abul Khayr Alonto; Hon. Haroun Al-Rashid A. Lucman, Jr., former Regional Vice Governor of ARMM; Mr. Emilian Berutti, a PhD Candidate in International Relations and Doctoral Researcher at the Centre on Conflict, Development, Peacebuilding (CCDP); Ms. Eve Froneberg, a Research Associate and PhD Fellow at the Center for Conflict Studies at Philipps University Marburg, Germany; Ahmad Nour-al-Dinn Tamano, Head of the Provincial Tourism, Arts and Culture Office (PTCAO); Hon. Jalal "Bubuly" Decampong, 2nd District Board Member of Lanao del Sur; and representatives from PHILHEALTH-BARMM.

Today marks the Inception Meeting for the Research on the Muslim Ethnolinguistic Groups in the Philippines, organized by the National Historical Commission of the Philippines (NHCP), in partnership with Mindanao State University - Iligan Institute of Technology (MSU-IIT) and the Bangsamoro Commission for the Preservation of Cultural Heritage (BCPCH).

This significant event is attended by key informants and local historians from various ethnolinguistic groups. The program includes lectures on research writing, ethical conduct for researchers, and new trends in writing about history and culture.

Executive Assistant II Mohandis Iman M. Lucman, Senior History Researcher Nor-Jamal G. Batugan and History Researcher II Sittie Ayena H. Caye were in attendance, representing BCPCH Lanao del Sur.

The Maranao creative industry reflects the rich cultural heritage and artistic brilliance of the Maranao people. Its roots trace back to history, preserved in artifacts that showcase intricate craftsmanship and beauty. Many of these pieces, long considered prized possessions, are housed in European museums and have been featured in various exhibits, emphasizing the historical significance of Maranao traditional crafts.

A milestone in preserving this heritage was the repatriation of two ancient Lakub from the early 1900s. These artifacts, initially collected by US military officer C. Joseph Bikel, were returned through the efforts of Dr. Cristina Juan from the University of London's School of Oriental and African Studies. This event highlights the enduring bond between the Maranao people and their cultural heritage.

The Lakub exemplifies traditional Maranao designs and represents dying crafts, serving as a tangible link to the past. Preserving such artifacts is vital for sustaining the creative industry, promoting cultural tourism, and inspiring new generations of artists and craftsmen. The intricate designs continue to captivate audiences and ensure the Maranao creative legacy thrives.

Beyond its artistic treasures, Lanao del Sur offers breathtaking landscapes and a favorable climate. Yet, its true allure lies in its vibrant culture, where tradition meets innovation. The diverse crafts and products of the Maranao people resonate globally, reflecting resilience and ingenuity.

BCPCH Chairperson Salem Lingasa highlighted the importance of centric leadership, saying, “In centric leadership, if one part of the body feels pain, it must be felt by all parts.”

He urged staff to uphold the Bangsamoro legacy, moral governance, and professionalism, adding, “Cleanliness in the workplace is essential.”

Chairperson Lingasa also commended staff for their exemplary performance, particularly in the timely submission of BEDS to the Ministry of Finance, Budget, and Management (MFBM), making BCPCH the first BARMM office to complete this requirement.

Executive Director Akmad Mama reinforced the message, stressing adherence to policies and professional integrity.

The National Historical Commission of the Philippines (NHCP), in partnership with the Mindanao State University - Iligan Institute of Technology and the Bangsamoro Commission for the Preservation of Cultural Heritage (BCPCH-BARMM), will hold the Inception Meeting & Research-Writing Colloquium for the History of the Thirteen (13) Muslim-Majority Ethnolinguistic Groups of Mindanao, Sulu, and Palawan on 16-17 January 2025 at the New Dawn Hotel, Cagayan de Oro City.

This is the first phase of a multi-year research project led by the NHCP, the MSU-IIT, and the BCPCH-BARMM that aims to write a comprehensive historical record of Muslim Mindanao through the perspectives and voices of the Muslim majority ethnolinguistic groups in the Philippines. More than forty participants from across Mindanao, Sulu, and Palawan along with researchers and facilitators will gather for the two day program that will include discussions and narrative writing sessions. With the aim of contributing to the development of Filipino and Moro research, this project is one of the major research projects under the 2030 Year of Philippine Muslim History and Heritage as envisioned in Administrative Order No. 10, s. 2023.

𝐃𝐈𝐃 𝐘𝐎𝐔 𝐊𝐍𝐎𝐖?

On January 13, 1975, Sultan Mohammad Dipatuan Kudarat was officially recognized as a national hero for his remarkable leadership and bravery in defending his homeland against Spanish colonization.

Born in 1580, Sultan Kudarat was a direct descendant of Shariff Kabungsuan, a Muslim missionary who arrived in Mindanao in the 14th century. After his father, Sultan Buisan, passed away in 1602, Kudarat ascended to power and ruled the Maguindanao Sultanate from 1619 to 1671. Throughout his 52-year reign, he successfully repelled multiple Spanish conquests, maintaining the sovereignty of his sultanate and the Muslim faith in Mindanao.
