IT DIDN’T SEEM COPPER HAD DONE ANYTHING… yet. Well, aside from the actual kidnapping of the other. Or teennapping. This guy CLEARLY wasn’t all that young. Perhaps about her age, though no one ever actually believed Cat was seventeen. She was lucky if people pegged her at fourteen, really. Having not grown s i n c e that age, she resembled a girl trapped in a younger body. Small form and rounded, freckled face just made her seem a child in the eyes of most people ( much to her rising dismay and annoyance ). Regardless of what she l o o k e d, she was still actually seventeen and the male that Copper had brought in seemed to be the same.

Tugging her thoughts back on track, she watched the form of the man lumber away. A six foot, seven inches monster that she had come crawling back to out of desperation, only to then regret her decision. Yet, running away WASN’T so easy when he kept her under watch like a hawk. Cat could only blame herself for returning to a man she knew to be a monster. It was pathetic, and she felt a vile hatred for herself stirring within.

Discarding her current, inner self-loathing, she wandered to where the boy was both tied up AND chained. Copper wasn’t taking any chances, it seemed. Head canted and she knelt down, speaking low to avoid eavesdropping from others in the ring that might come n e a r to spy the captor. “…Wha’cha in here for, bub? Y’don’t look for much use. Why’d Copper want you?”

This weekend, Vin was supposed to be spending quality time with his father. But, as usual, q u a l i t y t i m e quickly turned into “Take Your Child to Work Day.” Which, honestly, Vin didn’t mind too much. In fact, he thought his parents had the coolest job in the world, and, since, his mom rarely told him about her days, when he got a front row seat to his dad’s? AWESOME.

What wasn’t so awesome was the risks that came with their job which they’d always warned Vin about. Injury, absence, death. Every day, he’d have to prepare himself for the worst. It’s become almost routine. Desensitized to loss. But they never prepared him for what could happen to him. Well, not thoroughly, at least. His mother never expected anything to happen to him. But as dad’s normally do, Briggs taught him how to fight, shoot a gun, and escape. Run: that was always the plan. But Copper was already a big man who surrounded himself with other men who somehow made him grow. So, when they towered over Vin, muscles wrapped around his small stature, and he never really had a chance to get away.

Briggs had dug too deep into their operations, and someone recognized him. A RAT. So, while Briggs negotiated a deal on the inside, and Vin waited h i d d e n in the car, Copper’s men striked.

Vin couldn’t remember very much of it at all. But the bruises and bumps on his body told a story. His knuckles were covered in black and blue, and his stomach felt like it’d been turned upside down. If he didn’t die at the hands of these men, this headache surely would be his cause of death.

Run: that was always the plan. He could see it in her eyes; it was her plan too. “He doesn’t want me,” Vin groaned. “My dad... He’ll come and save me.”
