i fear she’s an undiagnosed autistic (well at the least it’s extremely implied.) lesbian in the fucking 80’s, the only reason we see her start out more sarcastic and guarded is cause she’s probably masking.

‘oh but she was so much smarter in season 3 she cracked the russian code she-‘ yes, and she’s still smart she’s just been too busy getting hit with supernatural beings like the mind flayer and vecna the past 2 seasons after living a relatively normal life. im positive she’s better things to be worrying about.

and notice how we see her personality only began to shift to being less sarcastic and more genuine after she felt comfortable enough to come out to steve (which is massive for that time period, especially considering steve and who he was in earlier seasons.)

she’s quite literally the same character just more so her true self cause she’s comfortable enough around everyone in the group to not have to mask.

and the people on tik tok who’ve been commenting more so on her season 4 self, the reason she was more anxious and twitchy and rambling for a good majority of it was cause nancy was harder to talk to at first due to how close robin was to steve. (her ex who she’s still romantically confused about during season 4 bear in mind.)
