The world of Toril is one of vastly diverse landscapes and construction based heavily around arcane abilities. Magic is found in every walk of life and it is uncommon for cultures to dissuade its use, though there are some.
The third planet from the Sun in Realmspace, it is orbited by one moon named Selûne, and by a cluster of asteroids, known as the Tears of Selûne. Throughout most of its history, Toril was known less commonly as Abeir-Toril. The name "Abeir-Toril" was archaic, meaning "cradle of life" in an extinct and forgotten language. However, these worlds were separated long ago and Abeir was forgotten by the people of Toril, the stories lost to time.
Faerun is one of the major continents of Toril, located on a super continent with Kara-Tur to the east and and Zakhara to the south, just across The Great Sea. The continent is flanked to the west by The Sea of Swords and by The Shining Sea to the southwest, both leading further west into The Trackless Seathat separates the continent from Maztica. To the north, in the coldest regions is The Great Ice Sea. Strangely enough, an uncommon inland water body called The Sea of Fallen Stars sits in the middle of the continent providing trade routes between nations which is one of the primary features of the land.
The continent of Faerun itself has a climate and geography that varies widely from forest to grassland to glaciers to mountains, and cultures that differ just as much.
Evermeet: The island homeland for most of the elves of Faerûn following the great retreat.
Evereska: The hidden city of elves to the north in the Shaeradim Hills.
The Sword Coast: A rich coastline of trade, piracy, and adventure between Waterdeep and Baldur's Gate.
Baldur's Gate: This metropolis was the hub between a number of trading routes named after the famous explorer Balduran.
Thay: A magocracy built on slavery; home of the notorious Red Wizards.
The Forgotten Forest: A small patch of woodland to the west of the Shaeradim Hills, once the location of a small village that was destroyed by a mysterious calamity long ago and forgotten.
