I will forever hate the way the show frames Thomas’ “uppitiness” & all his airs and graces as a bad thing when… Carson does the exact same thing and not a single brow could be raised.
Like when he insists everyone calls him Mr Barrow, it’s for a reason, he’s had a promotion & it’s a mark of respect that they should adjust as such. Just because someone like Anna doesn’t do it (which is mostly to prevent confusion anyway) doesn’t mean he shouldn’t?
I’m not saying he isn’t rude with it. But if Carson was in the same position - he would blow a gasket & do the exact same.
Does Thomas take this behaviour too far? Yes. He outright bullies William but he also is just doing what he sees Carson doing - William is a little late? Tell him it’s unacceptable. (Yes they are basically in the same position but Thomas is still that little bit senior.)
Like… Carson tears a strip out of William for having a split seam in his livery - I know Carson is in charge but is that behaviour not the same?
I think it’s pretty clear where Thomas learnt it.
And I can perfectly imagine Carson making the leap from footman to Butler or Under-Butler, however he was promoted, and being uppity with it. I highly doubt that he was ready to let anyone call him Charles anymore - but this is a mark on Thomas’ character & not Carson’s?
Finally finished my umpteenth rewatch of Downtown Abbey. I absolutely adore this show. Despite how many times I've seen the show, I always find new Thomas screencaps to indulge in. So here's an assortment from all the seasons. Please enjoy : )
Inspired by this post (I felt it needed to be updated with “butler”)

can’t believe there are so many scenes in downton that don’t have thomas in them… literally what’s the point
Thinking how future historians in the downton abbey universe will wonder if the crawleys were actually murderers, bc there’s just an excessive amount of deaths on record to make any of it look innocent
And like an entire subreddit would exist to prove lord grantham was some type of mob boss in the aristocracy, who killed anyone who wronged his family. The descendants of the granthams are constantly in the media trying to disprove these theories, like “no great grandad was just a guy… we think” but they don’t really have any solid evidence to disprove any claims bc the family took those secrets to the their graves
It’s so bad that people wholeheartedly believe he was the one who sunk the titanic and caused World War I
When his daughter was not keen on marrying his heir, he sent him on the titanic. When the heir came back as a canadian, he sent him away / probably killed him, we never had news of him.
When his new heir found himself a fiancée who was not related to them, she died mysteriously while staying at their house. When a turkish diplomat tried to bed the daughter he wanted to marry his heir, the guy mysteriously died.
When his new heir tried to implement changes, he died just after Downton Abbey was informed the child his daughter bore was a boy.
Two of his servants were convicted of murders but, probably because they were his hitmen, he managed to get them freed thanks to relations. There is circumstantial evidence that he knew where Bates was while on the run and didnt tell the police.
Bates? Killed the woman trying to make scandal go down on the family. Anna? Killed the trusted valet of a guest who didnt want to take his daughter's no seriously.
Sir Philip Tapsell failed to save his daughter? [The actor] died a few years later, complete coincidence of course... unless.
He doesnt approve of Gregson's sights on edith? Gregson dies.
Is embroiled in his share of illegal things, as is his mother (burglary at the card sharp's... getting molesley out of the army...) and his right hand man, who official reports from a trusted member of the household (a mr barrow who would go on to be butler) certify isnt able to do his job properly, is kept by his side because he's well versed in pick pocketing (sampson), forgery (sampson), and murder (vera).
An elderly george crawley meanwhile is like: "...we called him donk??"
Historians: "ah yeah probably a bastardization of 'don crawley'"
I LOVE THIS
