morgan and reid had spun her between them, and her blood was like champagne, heart caught somewhere between their blown kisses eye crinkling laughter. penelope and jj had spun her more slowly, less like cotton candy and more wrapped up, time pausing. 

it’s not you guys. i love you guys. 

and oh, she does. she does love them, and she knows it, circling the edge of the dance floor and watching them for the first time without her. 

you’ll be fine, she wants to say, but words shouldn’t break this moment. morgan and penny laughing and dancing, watching the steps their feet take. henry is twirling around on his mothers feet and hotch is whispering something into beth’s ear, and will - will is spinning henry on his shoulders, and this is the world she’s leaving. 

there’s a tap on emily’s shoulder. she spins, and the solemn, goodbye look on her face breaks into a soft grin. 

“dave.”

there are not many members of the team she doesn’t have to stretch to dance with. she’s folded into his arms instantly, no question needed, her head on his shoulder. ( there’s a brief moment: ridiculous in nature, ludicrous, where she wishes she were a couple inches shorter, wishes she could kick off her heels in the middle of the dance floor and dance with her feet on top of his. ) 

they’re swaying. back and forth, like ocean waves. she couldn’t have told you what music was playing. 

       “you’ll visit.” 

it’s not a question. it’s a statement. it’s a hostage negotiation and excuses will not be tolerated. despite the fist-sized lump in her throat, emily is smiling. soft and real and in love with everyone on the dance floor. 

“and you’ll call.” 

there’s a catch in her voice.
