Greetings… fellow monsters, wandering humans… and any quiet thing listening from the dark.
I am Echryn Vale—though most simply call me Batsby.
A traveling doctor by trade… and a collector of knowledge by nature. I move where the night permits me—through villages heavy with fever, ruins thick with rot, shadowed roads and forgotten alleys alike. I listen to what others overlook. I study what others fear. The lungs whisper. The blood trembles. The body always tells its truth… if one is patient enough to hear it.
Should you be ill… curious… or burdened by questions no one else will answer—do not hesitate to approach. I have no quarrel with the living.
And none with the dying, either.
I do not bite…
…unless necessity insists.
“Hello, my dears. I’m Sylvara. I was once Echryn’s mate, though now I exist in the afterlife, watching over him and our family as an unseen protector.
Please, don’t be shy with me. If you are kind to them, then you will always find kindness from me as well.” 🌸

Led by Echryn "Batsby" Vale, they survived the ancient Blood Accord, a law that outlawed mixed-species unions and hunted the children born from them. 👻🃏: Batsby... Interesting name for a rather interesting monster. *He allowed Batsby to touch him before he shifted to the side.* I'm Keith, bodyguard to jester and one of the top jokers here.
and so i heard, didnt know some humans could work for Jester willingly
he mused aloud, thoughtfully pinching his cheek with one claw. There was something oddly familiar about the gesture—reminiscent of Doctor's mannerisms, yet softened by Batsby's own gentle disposition.
hm… i suppose that makes it my job to study them a little further but i must have permission first
with their father now staying with a friend of his, the 3 bataven siblings wanted to go and show off their new forms to some performers
and the first one they chose was the newest one, Pique
Larkspur walks up to him first, his chest puffing up like a proud older brother, both of his hands being held by the other two. Brair is hiding behind his back, peaking with shy curiosity, and Thistle is just casually sucking her thumb.
hi Mister Pique! Look at us! We look just like Father now!
He gave a proud little spin, his black hair swaying behind him as his feathered bat wings spread just enough to show them off.
see? i'm even taller too!
When he first heard the voices, Pique was confused, not recognising them at first, but they clearly knew him. So he decided to crouch to their level. Once his eyes cast down to the wings, his whole face lit up.
A single finger carefully reached out to gently tap the children gently on the top of their heads as he spoke softly to them.
"Larkspur... Briar... and little Thistle, yes?"
He starts to clap as Larkspur spins and shows off his wings.
"If you keep growing taller like this... Next time I see you three, you'll be taller than the tents! What are you three doing all the way out here?"
He looked around for signs of the trio's father, deciding to keep an eye on them for him for now.
hehe, no we wont. if we were as big as the tents, then we would be waaaay too big! how would Father carry us then?
Larkspur says as he raises his arms high in a fit of giggles. while Brair quietly spoke up about where their father was, fidgeting with the sleeve of his shirt
father is hurt... h-he's staying with a friend till he gets better...the friend is helping him rest
Thistle nodded, already leaving her older brother's side, and with a delighted squeak, she wrapped both arms around Pique's leg in a tight hug, her little bat wings fluttering so quickly they buzzed behind her.
Pique chuckled at Larkspur’s energy, He turned his attention to Brair as the middle child spoke up. That certainly explained with he wasn’t with them. One arm reaching out to pat the the little one’s shoulder
“He is not too badly hurt I hope… and that you three are unharmed too.”
The performer was already checking them over even though he was certain that if they were even scratched, Batsby wouldn’t let them stray so far from him.
He carefully placed a hand on Thistle’s head, smiling away.
“I miss him too, and I am glad you came all this way to see me… hmm…. Your father said he makes you little figures… now I don’t have acorns but I know where to find buttons and fabrics and threads… gifts of the circus… if you three would like, we could go hunting and make Mr Batsby some Circus Figures to keep him company as he recovers?”
father was hurt pretty bad..but hes okay. Larkspur only had a broken wing, the rest of us are fine
Briar answered quietly, his small hands folding together as his ears lowered. As he gestured to where there were faint signs of healing on Larkpur's left wing
when Pique mentioned making figures for their father, she gave a little jump in excitement, pulling on the performer's clothes as her purple eyes sparkled up at him
ohh caaan we? i really want to make Papa smile again! he likes it when we make things for him!
Pique looked at the wing, angry that someone or something would harm Larkspur in such a way, but he quickly pushes that down. Not wanting to scare or worry the young in front of him.
"If that is something you three would like to do... However I don't know how to make things so you'll have to teach me."
Pique stands, already planning a route for them to take, the best out of sight paths, the paths people seemed to like dropping items, scrap material storage and the like.
"I know... I am not your father but if you preferred being carried... one can go one shoulders and I can hold the other two in my hands?"
hehe, we love teaching people! father taught us lots and lots about making things!
Larkspur says excitedly, beaming a wide smile as he claps his hands.
he says making things takes patience... and love! if you rush, it won't come out right!
Beside him, Briar smiled shyly and gave a small nod.
mhm... father's really good at it...
When Pique asked if they wanted to be carried, Thistle's eyes immediately lit up. She eagerly threw her hand into the air before either of her brothers could answer.
hehe yes we wanna be carried! but i wanna ride on your shoulders though!
"It sounds like we need to find the best of materials...If your father is really good at it and he taught you three, then you must also be really really good right?"
As he spoke, Pique carefully picked Thistle up and placed her on his shoulders, not letting go until he was certain she was balanced.
"Hold on, but be careful of my hat... It's against the rules for me to take it off."
The performer then looked to Briar and Larkspur. Holding out his arms, if they wanted to be carried they could easily sit on the outstretched limbs, but if they wanted to walk they could simply take his hands.
all three of them nodded, as the brothers climbed onto Pique's arms and held on as tightly as they could
yeah! we're good at it, we promise!
Larkspur declared proudly, puffing out his chest.
Meanwhile, Thistle busied herself with the dangling ends of Pique's hat, giggling quietly as she absentmindedly twirled the fabric between her little fingers. She was curious, but unlike her usual self, she resisted the urge to tug it off.
Once he had a good grip on the children Pique slowly stood up and started his wandering, actively avoiding areas where they might bump into people.
"Oh you don't need to promise... Hmm I'm thinking Buttons, Fabric, thread, sticks hmmmm oh beads get dropped a lot too... We don't have things like acorns sadly"
He wiggled his head slightly as he walked, not enough for it to be super noticeable, but more than enough for the bells to flick and jingle for Thistle.
"I like it too, It was going to match my gloves... but I think this colour looks better."
“I don’t know about pretty but I have a pair yes… if you gently poke the left cone or the right cone you might be able to feel them.. I truck my hair into the middle cone.”
His voice was quiet enough so only the trio could hear, he still wasn’t fully sure on the rules of the circus so he wasn’t sure if he could talk about them.
Whenever Larkspur or Briar points out some treasures, pique would kneel down to let them hop off to collect them.
“You two are very perceptive to find so many from so high up! I think they look perfect and Mr Batsby will think they look very nice.”
Thistle's eyes lit up the moment she felt the horns beneath Pique's hat. A delighted giggle escaped her as she carefully rubbed them with her little hands, treating them as though she had discovered something amazing.
hehe they feel nice and i really do think they're pretty... they suit you!
Meanwhile, Larkspur and Briar proudly held up their finds, their little wings twitching with excitement.
Yeah father will like it! we always been able to do look for things high up cause we get carried by him to
we understand, don't worry. we won't let you get into any trouble because of us.
With that promise made, she carefully slipped down from Pique's shoulders and trotted over to her brothers. The two were already sitting by the table, eagerly waving for her to join them.
what are you gonna make, mister? Mine's is gonna be an archer... they protect people from afar
Briar looked up with a shy smile, clutching his sticks and beads close to his chest. seeming pleased with the idea, his small wings giving a tiny flutter.
mine is gonna be a dragon! Big and brave like me!
the eldest said in excitement as he held his little hand up, nearly making Briar fall over
Pique shuffles closer as he watches the three with curious eyes intrigued at how they are going to make their figures. Pique liked to learn things, especially from others, a life of loneliness before the circus being the source of curiousity of others.
"I think I better start collecting little trinkets in the future... in case you visit again. Maybe enough for your father to join us."
He carefully took his sticks, starting to make his figure, using string to keep things in place. He thought for a moment before digging in the box, passing a bent metal pin to Larkspur, a tattered piece of orange and red fabric to Briar.
"A bow... Fire breath... And what were you making little Thistle? I don't think you said."
i'm making my mama, father always described her to me... and now i want to imagine what she looked like.
she said thoughtfully as she carefully arranged the little pieces in front of her as she smiled to herself, completely content despite never having seen her mother.
he said i look a little like her, so I'm using that as my vision
Her brothers looked over at her creation, both wearing small, bittersweet smiles. They shared a brief glance but never questioned her choice since the family doesn't carry around pictures and only carried her memory through father's stories
Pique couldn't help but stare at all three of them. He never knew either of his parents, he had no stories to be told of, no way of knowing who he looked more like. It was always him and him alone. He carefully picked up the box rummaging right to the bottom where he delicately pulled out a cameo frame. His voice went back to being quiet as he bent and roll the metal as if it was putty between his fingers.
"I am sure she was wonderful... I did not know her but... the way you talk of her... how your sibling look... your father's good judge of character... She sounds like a... wonderful mother... one deserving of a crown perhaps?"
He offers the cameo turned crown to Thistle, He was unsure if this was the right thing to do, He hoped there was no harm in offering at least.

Five tiny figure wind up at Batsby’s, made of buttons, buttons and other scraps. Four look like Batsby and his Three chicks, the last looked kind of like Pique.
There was a note attached
‘The little ones taught me, I hope you like them my friend.”
how sweet, i will enjoy them greatly, my dear friend
he chuckled, kneeling by the tree and holding each of them to feel the craftsmanship of the dolls
🦠: I have seen your little balls of fluff. Quite adorable if I do say so myself. Aster seems to like them so if he does, I will as well. *He perched and kneels down, his knees starting to bother him* perhaps one day before you grow too old, I can take you and your children on a night flight. I can hold you on my back or in my talons if you cannot fly any longer. I want you to live the rest of your years in peace, old timer. *He chirps*
ah thank you, im glad you enjoy them. And… a flight together does sound rather wonderful someday
he smiled fondly, a hand reaching to touch Panoth's beak, a gesture of thanks and to further remember his face, and after a quiet moment, he reached up and carefully removed the mask that had hidden his own face, allowing Panoth to see him fully
as for peace, however, i do not believe i shall ever truly achieve it. even when my children grow older and have to fight as well
🦠: *Panoth leans into Batsby's touch, even nuzzling him* mmm... Your touch is nice... *He purrs before scanning the other's face, memorizing it.* Then we monsters will have to keep fighting for peace then.. Me and my king can keep them safe.

🦠: *he sighs* I am glad. As much as I dislike that he works for the court Jester, I'm glad he's doing well. He's the youngest and smallest in the clutch and wasn't expected to survive. I didn't think he would either but he proved us wrong. He does not know that I am still alive. We are the only survivors of the fire caused by humans.
ah so he and my daughter have some familiarity then. She was the smallest out of all my little ones; now she is simply a little bundle of endless energy
as he smiled beneath his mask, the thought clearly warmed his heart
and i have heard about that story, so you are his brother, are you not? i am grateful to know that at least one person survived that fire
🦠: Yes...I am the eldest brother. The first to hatch among the first clutch. *He then sighs before carefully removing the hood around his head. Although mostly healed over by now, his head was scarred with no feathers on it.* I do not like being bald.. But no matter what I do, it won't heal. The feathers won't regrow. My face is fine but my head and neck not so much. I look hideous... Ah wait.. You cannot see this.. Can you? I noticed your eyes.
oh i do not mind showing them, i have never seen them anyway… and i do not believe anyone has ever truly described them to me
Slowly, he unfurled his broad wings from around his body before carefully drawing his green robe down from his shoulders, which then revealed his very bony, skinny frame, marred by many deep scars, some even looking like bullet holes.
🦠: oh my goodness. *He carefully reaches out, touching a few of the scars* you've... Been through a lot, Mr. Batsby. *His eyes scan each scar as well as the bullet holes* it is a miracle you are still alive... But you do need to watch your health.. You are quite thin.

so your Racket, hm? how adorable to see you, but now for the purpose of my visit
she hands the husky fool a small bag of supplies. no doubt things she thought would be fitting for Figaro and his kids
and something just for you, for being such a wonderful guardian
giving him a small treat with a hand pressed to her lips
-Sylvara
Racket looks at sylvara with his head tilted before taking the supplies. “Ohh hi! Nice to meet youu?” He paused trying to think of their name. “We haven’t met..have we?” The shiba inu’s lips purse in pout as he struggles to think.
It’s immediately side tracked upon seeing the treat as he gasps loudly in excitement. “Treat??? A treat for me????” Tail wagging so fast he looks back up at sylvara. “Oooo!! What is it!!!”
"Hehe... well, from what I know, dogs seem to like peanut butter, so I thought I'd make you one inspired by that.
she rubbed the side of her head with a sheepish smile, she didnt know what dogs would usually like, so she thought peanut butter was the next best thing
But my name is Sylvara, by the way. I promise I'm a friend of Figaro's
Racket stared for a long time before he ate the treat, chewing over and over and over. Tongue working on getting the peanut butter out of his teeth. Unable to speak the shiba could only let sylvara into the tent after giving her a sniff.
Figaro was still in his ever vigilant position, watching over his brood but perked at seeing sylvara.
She giggled softly at the sight, pleased that her little bargaining chip had worked. Drifting inside, she gave Figaro a gentle wave, her wings fluttering faintly behind her.
how are you doing, dearest? i seen many people walk in and out of your tent, and I couldn't help but wonder what has been happening around here
Figaro sighed as he got up,walking over to sylvara. “I am merely trying to be precautious. These are my first eggs. I do not want anything to happen to them. Especially after..” he paused and shook his head.
how cute, and I see one of them is smaller than the rest, but don't you worry. My daughter was like that too
as she bent down and admired the eggs. smiling fondly toward them as she gets reminded of when her own little chicks had still rested safely within their shells.
but you're welcome, people should feel proud of you, Figaro. You built a family despite all the hardships life threw in your path. That isn't something everyone can do
Figaro nodded, comforted at the idea that his children would be fine in the end. He knew they would be of course but it was still reassuring.
“I have. I am so very thankful to be here. It really has become a home for me and my brother. It has truly meant so much to us. It well and truly has. I could not see myself going anywhere else. Not anymore.”
and thats a good thing, they have everyone here to watch over them now, not just you and Pierrot, of course
now hovering a hand over the eggs and muttered softly to herself. It was a simple blessing of sorts for their continued well-being, especially for the smallest one
you do look exhausted, though, i hope you're getting enough rest. It'll be much harder to care for them if you don't take care of yourself as well
Figaro tensed slightly when her hand moved over the eggs but he relaxed not long after when he realized she was blessing them.
“I have not been resting. I have taken to watching over them to the point of obsession..you could say.” He felt embarrassed to admit it yet it was true. He had been constantly on alert, always checking them and making sure the tent stayed at a perfect humidity.
