What if the Truman show did a queerbait arc but then they found out Truman was gay for real and had to recalibrate and their tv network would have to take a definitive stance on homosexuality, yay or nay in the late 90s and it's not like they can recast Truman. They would have to either plot him into an it's okay to be gay fake happy relationship like they did with his tv wife or try and scare him off homosexuality by doing homophobic gay misery storylines at him to try and keep him firmly in the closet.

I would be lying if I didn't admit the people who go on about this anger me like no others. Obviously, first there's the part you're bringing up, but I mean a story about divorce and destruction in attempts for recovery could be well done and incorporated into a good story. There's a reason why, for instance when people think of The Sopranos they often think of toxic doomed couple Christopher Moltisanti and Adriana La Cerva. There's a reason why despite decades in the industry that actor still considers the scenes he did of his character spiraling out and hurting his fiancee "the scariest he's ever filmed" it can be good story telling.
But also, every time someone asks P Ball about this, he always states that he does not want Langdon to have a divorce. That he wants him to have Abby and the kids as his rock. That him and Taylor would be extremely uncomfortable filming Frank and Mel in a romantic relationship, and yeah every scene they've filmed just looks like average ways you interact with your coworker in a workplace, no matter how the obsessors try to spin it.
And them using the trailer as evidence of "how divorced he looks" is really dumb. Cold weather could be making his pain flare up meaning he's struggling to not want drugs again/not sleeping, he could have just encountered a tiring work emergency, he might have been up all night with a sick kid, the water heater might have went out at his house and they're having trouble getting a repairman, he might have just walked in out of wind and snow and forgot a hairbrush etc. There are many reasons he could look like that which don't hint at secret divorce and it shows how little they've experienced life that this is all they can think of.
But the reason I really hate this concept is that every divorce theory they write paints Abby as the most offensive misogynistic trope of a hateful hag whom he never loved and who is getting evil in the divorce.
Actually thank you for ranting on my post prev this articulated everything I was feeling lol. The misogyny of dismissing Abby as a bitter petulant wife who’s making Langdon’s life hell and people joking as if it’s an inevitability his very real health crisis would lead to divorce just gets to me!! I am a bit of a kingdon hater but even putting that aside there’s something so uncomfortable about the way people discuss this character and frame it as affection.

The recent casting of Zendaya and Tom Holland - a couple who are the exact same age - is so reflective of Hollywood casting trends when it comes to portraying male and female ages. In The Drama, Zendaya plays opposite 40yr old Robert Pattinson, while in The Odyssey Holland is cast as Anne Hathaway’s (almost same age as Pattinson) son. The fact is that in that decade of 30s-40s male actors continue to be presented as young and desirable while any woman over 40 is immediately reduced to the role of mother - even opposite a ‘son’ only 13 years younger than her. In the Odyssey, Hathaway is closer in age to the man playing her son than the one playing her husband. Yet when a man her age is romantically partnered with a woman ten years younger than him it is deemed so normal, so unnoticeable as to be insignificant. Idk man, I’m just tired. I’m tired of women being treated as expired goods after the age of 40, and I’m tired of the way this is reflected in filmmaking and always has been.
