Look at Red Dwarf. Mixed race main character, a white guy, a black guy who's not even human, and a white guy who's not even human. Imagine the shitstorm on both sides if that came out today. I grew up in the 90s and I swear things were much better then simply because there wasn't so much focus on race in the media. There were plenty of black people in the media then as well, but whether there was or wasn't it didn't seem to matter.

Roland Deschain was written as a white guy, played up as a White guy in the storyline and deliberately interacted with black characters as a white guy. Then there’s the whole conflict with Detta about him being white.
