EYES RAISE TO MEET THE GAZE OF A YOUNGER WOMAN'S, soft in her features and warm in her cheeks. asking her why she thinks him of all people could tell her which ribbon to get is on the tip of his tongue, as if he looks like he's an employee hereâdespite the suggestion of aydin getting a job not entirely far off, in his financial crisis. but there's no way she would know that. the old aydin would've snapped, but the lord aydin of london is far kinder than his older self, so instead he manages a curt smile back at her. " i'm afraid i would not be much help in the department of ribbons, " he tells her, though he does humor her, reaching out to thumb both the materials lightly. " but they both are lovely colors. what sort of impression are you trying to make ? "
her face very nearly falls dramatically at his denial of knowing much until he reaches out to touch the materials, and she casts a more hopeful look, tilting her head. "nor am i, sir, so my situation must be quite dire," she demures, studying the ribbons herself again. "her dress is more similar to this color," she lifts one hand, scrutinizing it with a critical eye. "but the other might be complimentary in its difference. i would very much like her to look ethereal, you know, but a ribbon can hardly do that alone."
Emmeline knew it was a man, from his response she gathered he was a man of honor. Nothing worth worrying about. "Surely, my mother would have my head if she knew that I was hiding." What a choice of words for her, to say that. With a sigh and fast blinks while staring at the wall, she shook her head. "Do not bother her. She is surely catching up with her old friends of the Ton after being gone so long."
laurie hesitates, torn between respecting her wishes, as he might if she were an older lady, one that he felt could manage more on her own, but emmeline appeared to be quite young, and he couldn't quite trust that. "i really do think i ought to escort you back inside at least, miss," he offers, haltingly. "perhaps not your mother, but a friend of your family's?"
â "WELL, I WOULDN'T NEED TO LECTURE if you didn't come home with your skirts a mess, " though amelia can't help but laugh. in spite of all this, the ridiculousness, grace is the person in the world who most makes her feels like she belongs. it's easy to slip into back and forth like this, to say exactly what she thinks without worrying grace will ever abandon her â well. most things. even sisters have their secrets. " just promise me you won't look like this when you meet the queen, " amelia says with a resigned sigh. eyes light up at the sight of the ribbon, smiling broadly. even if she's coming home to a lecture, her sister will always think of her. " it's perfect ! and you knew, " amelia smiles, " that it matches my dress for the ball. " there's a prolonged pause as she examines the ribbon, holds it up to her face in the mirror before she cuts her eyes back to her sister. " you didn't go into town alone, did you ? "
"but the fresh air is so lovely and the gardens were so green already, you should've seen them." her protests are full of giggles at her sisters laughter, grasping her hand with a pleased smile that showed no remorse in her actions. sure, she'd have made it more challenging to wash later, but even the threat of amelia's disappointment couldn't keep her from taking a longer way home, a dustier path, just for the sake of seeing something interesting. "i wouldn't dream of such a thing. i will be a perfect lady, so as not to embarrass you," her eyes roll when she says lady, though, knowing good and well that she's not diamond material like her sister was. there was a small lack of common sense in grace that made for interesting stories, but created a lack of propriety in her that would make having the queen's approval something quite difficult. "of course, that's exactly why i chose it above all the others." her wide grin snaps into a more innocent expression, her eyes widening at the question. "of course not. i wouldn't dream of it."
â "WHY DO YOU ALWAYS ASSUME THE FIRST THING I DO is lecture ? " her tone is playfully exasperated, looking up from her book to take in her sister's demeanor. it is a little frustrating â amelia doing all she can to foist grace up as a potential diamond for the season when she wanders about town with mud-splattered hems. " that said, this had better be a fabulous bribe, " she remarks, a little sigh escaping her lips before she cannot resist adding : " i almost think you do this on purpose to vex me. "
"perhaps because the first thing you do is lecture," she returns, her smile broadening with the playful back and forth she feels so much comfort in from her. it is not unusual for them to be at odds, when it does not matter, mostly due to her annoying little sister tendencies. "that's probably because i almost do it on purpose to vex you." she tugs the ribbons she had bought with her limited pocket money out of her sleeves, brandishing them with a flourish. "a gift."

All of the prying eyes, judging mamas of the Ton, it got to Emmeline. Even though her own mother was among those mamas, she needed to escape their range of sight. Disappearing into the gardens, she managed to find a quiet corner with a wall of climbing vines and blooming flowers. It was her solitude for just a moment before she heard a pair of footsteps along the stoned path. She didn't bother looking back.
laurie's never been one much for these events, other than the socializing with his friends â that, however, he was able to do on any given night in ton. there's no reliance on the stuffy, protocol-heavy events in the card room. the gardens are a brief reprieve, though he soon recognizes he's not alone, dropping into a slight, respectful bow. "something akin to that, miss, yes." he does not fully recognize the girl, only that she is about as young as his sister, if not more so. "should i find your chaperone?"
"before you breathe a word about my state of being," grace warns, her mood irreparably good from her trip into the square, looking for various bits and bobbles to hopefully cheer her sister, before the actual start of the ton â perhaps then she'd be inclined to consider more suitors than simply try to marry grace herself off. her skirts may be dirtied by her walk, but she's got more than enough disposition to distract. "i've brought you a gift. a bribe, of sorts."
"is this finally the season that the great lord cholmondeley falls?" his tone is teasing, similarly to how it has been every season they have both been in town, poking fun at the other's penchant to refuse to settle down. his opposition seemed stronger than even laurie's own. "or are you simply a chaperone, darling?"
"i do not have any new books for you, miss lovell." john's tone bore one bordering on annoyance, about as close as he could get with one of his better customers. esther's attitudes about his stock frequently put a damper on his moods, having to listen to her opinions about what to actually carry. "you will simply need to return at a later date if you want something you have yet to read."
"my good sir, forgive me for interrupting," she demures, smiling kindly at the other, carefully sheepish in her interruption, a slight gesture to the ribbons she was looking at for her sister. "do you frequent this establishment regularly? i am not quite sure which of these would make the best impression â has the best quality, really, and i could sorely do with a more discerning eye."

She pondered, feeling fortunate, she was not the recipient of the dreadful mistreatment whispered about in other households. For within this splendid dwelling, Laila's sole encounters were of kindness. "Rest assured, milady, I would never dare to blemish your flawless complexion," she reassured her, her voice acting as a soothing ointment in the atmosphere. With utmost care, she gently applied the mask onto Grace's countenance, her nimble hands tracing delicate patterns along the curves of her skin. "Calendula, mint, and rosemary. Isn't it invigorating?" she inquired as the fragrance of the herbs, wholesome and groundedâdrifted through the chamber.
grace can't help but giggle at that, trying to keep her face still but unable to in light of the other's words. "i would never think so little of you as to believe you would do such a thing on purpose, dear." she was darling, careful, one of the favorites of grace's in the household because of it. plus, she seemed so interestingly quiet, too. "calendula," she repeats, nose wrinkling with interest. she would have to seek out some of the delicate flowers for herself the next walk she took. "pray tell, where have you learned so much about these tinctures and remedies?"
[ lusi zhao, she/her, cis woman ] â was that GRACE ZHANG? the TWENTY-ONE year old is a LADY, how exciting to see them this season! rumors have it they are ADVENTUROUS and ACCOMPLISHED, but iâve heard they are DECEITFUL and NAIVE as well â maybe thatâs why theyâve been called the FERVOUR. I have even heard that SHE WRITES A SCANDAL SHEET â only time will tell.
history
born in england, grace is the youngest daughter of the zhang family, three years younger than her elder sister.
though it is very apparent she is the favored child, grace has little idea why â her interests lie in books, writing, spying on conversations she has been told she is too young to be apart of. her sister's tastes are more refined, more suited for a lady, and grace simply took too long to outgrow playing in the garden. though she would be considered accomplished at her age, it was not for lack of trying to avoid the term, either.
her sister amelia is her best friend â they are thick as thieves, and she is her sister's staunchest defender and devout advocate. though she does not understand why their parents treat them so differently, she has decided to make up for it by giving her their love tenfold. a word against her sister is a surefire way to turn her heart against even the closest of friends.
the only downside to having such a loving sister is she does not wish to be married so soon, or even at all. grace craves a deep foundation for any partnership she may enter, based on mutual respect, and therein lies the trouble â there are few people she respects that are considered suitable options for a lady.
rather than take the season seriously, grace has opted instead to be a most egregious flirt and do research for the various, probably inappropriate stories she writes. she is rarely seen without her pocket diary.
fun facts
she's a sagittarius so she likes to lie for fun
she has no idea her refusal to marry adds to the reason her sister is seen as a snob
she flirts for fun with virtually anyone, but the more inappropriate the better â if she could flirt with the queen, she would.
wanted
flirtationship â grace is more or less leading your muse on here, through her usual antics that are simply not appreciated by all to the effect that she would like
good influence â someone other than amelia who tries to get grace to take the season more seriously; could be a mentor figure or simply a friend
rival â grace is extremely competitive, and if there's the possibility of a competition, she'll jump at the chance for it, no matter the type
gossip â someone who has gossiped about her sister, that she plain does not like; bonus points if they were previously close prior
Cabell has made his way to the bookstore after hearing his younger sister's offhand request for more poetry books around the house. He finds himself a little stumped, however, when he realizes he's forgotten to ask her the names of any authors or titles he could recognize as he scans the shelves. "Excuse me, might you have any insight on what an inquiring young mind would most gravitate towards?" he asks the nearest patron, keeping his voice polite and quiet. He is very much an enjoyer of fine arts, but that is unfortunately limited to simply enjoying and not yet retaining information on names of great works or which authors are worth their salt.
the young man looks about as out of place as a lost gosling, and john is, frankly, a little amused, waiting to see exactly how long it takes for him to ask for help. "perhaps something less dull?" he inquires, tilting head inquisitively at the section that cabell is looking at now, smiling blandly as he gestures to another shelf. "if it is poetry you seek, i would be remiss to mention lord byron, or miss mary russell ritford instead. thomas campbell has an enchanting piece on the americas as well, should you be interested."
With utmost care, Laila diligently applied the herbal mask onto Grace's visageâher nimble hands gliding effortlessly with practiced grace. The age-old custom had forever been a source of solace for her. Within the opulent abode of the esteemed Zhang family, the herbal aroma permeated the air, filling her with serenity. âI have always loved masks. It always leaves my skin feeling fresh.â She spoke, her voice humming. Once upon a time, Laila herself had been the recipient of such indulgence, but that was an era long gone by, which now seeming to have withered away with the passage of time since her hasty escape from an ill-fated marital union.
"anything you would trust to your skin, i would gladly use myself." the compliment is paid warmly, smiling up at the maid with a brightness and near naivety. though her family did not have the status some others did, they did have the wealth to afford some such luxuries and these little masks were one of her guilty pleasures. though she swears she will never marry for anything but love, she would sorely miss this if it happened that her perfect half was not quite so wealthy. "what is in this one? it smells of the garden."
âexcuse me.â the princess called over, âis this creature yours?â she asked with a small smile, âif not i think i have decided to keep him.â
"your highness," there's small courtesy of acknowledgment, grace herself breathless from chasing the thing all over. "i have been attempting to capture him again for the better half of the last hour. you are a hero, truly."

[ zahn mcclarnon, he/they, demi man ] â was that JOHN ALMON? the FIFTY-ONE year old is a BOOKSTORE OWNER, how exciting to see them this season! rumors have it they are STUDIOUS and RESOURCEFUL, but iâve heard they are AVOIDANT and IMPULSIVE as well â maybe thatâs why theyâve been called the BIBLIOPHILE. I have even heard that HE HAS HAD AN AFFAIR WITH A WEALTHY NOBLEWOMAN â only time will tell.
history & fun facts
john's maternal family was originally from the americas, though he was born and raised himself in london
the store that became almon's bookstore has been run by his family for the majority of his father's life, and he has inherited it and runs it now as a bookstore and publishing enterprise
family and his store are his two highest priorities in life, with a little bit of a toss up on where either falls at either time â he has a tendency to be a bit of a workaholic
he places a high value on business > everything except family, a lot of his morality is determined by his business sense; he has little to no interest in being good except by his family's opinions of him and he'd like to have them set up well
john's bookstore is the printer of lady whistledown's society paper and he has little to no interest in learning her identity past blackmail
"Jameson, to whom I am most faithful. What shall he do when I am off the market?" Syd sighs factitiously. "A final dalliance before the ton begins hurts no one. Least of all the lord of roses."
"I suppose we may never find out," Cabell teases, alluding to Sydney's inability to hold a relationship as he raises a brow at Laurie. "If by dalliance, you two mean a rousing night of conversation, laughter, and wits, you can count me in," he smiles broadly, clapping them both on the shoulder. "You know, I do believe with some convincing Jameson could be open to a poetry reading."
"and god forbid we ever do. i pity the poor soul who is so unfortunate as to marry this man." he claps a hand on sydney's shoulder, affectionate in his teasing. "poetry, rosa?" the look he gives over sydney's shoulder is appalled, nearly pale. "my god, it is worse than i thought. can we not tempt you to cards at least?"
