Alongside his father and grandfather, Midwestern picker Samuel Sloma has spent decades digging through the garages, barns and basements of the dead. Born a new player to an old pastime, Sloma was raised along rows of old warehouses and closing five-and-dime stores, amongst classic symbols of untold stories. 1. What is Rust Belt Americana?

Rust Belt Americana is a return to the slow, thoughtful, and always well-made. It’s Vintage junkyard jewelry composed with calloused hands and an open heart.

2. How and why did you became a "picker”?

It started the day my grandfather took me to a flea market, gave me a dollar, and told me to come back with something older than him. I have been picking through things ever since. I find it mildly important to preserve the idea of American industry. These things mark the chapters of a very young nation and I’ve never read a good book with just one chapter. The ambition to turn my findings into jewelry came sometime around 2007.

3. What is the weirdest item you have found when picking?

Maybe not the weirdest thing, but I got some odd looks driving down Cicero with a 10-point deer mount strapped to the back of my motorcycle.

4. What inspires your work?

Nostalgia for a well made — albeit destructive — American past.

5. What are the two musts that accompany you on the road?

70’s country music and an open mind.

6. What's the weirdest place you have picked in?

There’s a man I visit every now and then in Ohio. He’s a Vietnam vet with no teeth and lots of wild chickens.

7. What's something no one else knows about you?

I listen to Christmas music year-round.

8. Any last words?

INTRODUCTION: “Jon is the most bad ass investment banker you’ll ever meet. I got to know him after college when I moved back to the Chicagoland area. Jon and I immediately connected over a mutual love of similar artist, musicians and designers. Throughout the last few years Jon has been there as a constant source of support to me and an awesome example of what friendship should look like. Jon recently moved a block away from our studio in the West Loop, Chicago and we’re all pumped to have him as the newest addition to our neighborhood. I’m thrilled to introduce him to you today and hope you have the opportunity to meet in person before you die.” -Jacob Fulton

1. First off, congrats on your new spot in the West Loop! Welcome to the neighborhood, where should we go to eat? 

Thank you, it’s good to be here. As some might say, it’s about darn time. In regards to food, anywhere but my place - unless you want cereal and yogurt.

2. People may not know this but you’ve mentored a number of folks – primarily high school students – over the years. Who were/are some of your mentors?

I’ve certainly been blessed by several mentors over the years. Some have shaped my life spiritually and personally while others have shaped it professionally. One of the things I’ve come to realize through it all is that these opportunities come in all shapes and sizes and often arrive in ways I least expect. To this end, I’ve tried to become increasingly aware of the chances to mentor as well as to be mentored and have found that some of the greatest opportunities to teach are also some of the greatest chances to learn (or relearn).

3. How did you end up in the industry that you work in?

I graduated from a small liberal arts college about 10 years ago where I played soccer and was incredibly active with various leadership roles on campus. I studied pre-law and was dead set on going straight to law school upon graduation but couldn’t get in to save my life due to a below-than-average LSAT score. Consequently, I sought advice and took a job with a startup investment firm out of Chicago. I now work at another startup where a few friends and I decided to leave more lucrative positions to join a mentor and attempt to build something totally from scratch. We have worked diligently at the onset here to design financial products with specific purposes and the end investor in mind – a stark contrast to our experiences on Wall Street.

4. Which designers/artists inspire you most and why?

I appreciate consistency, authenticity and accessibility. I need to trust the people and the process. I also appreciate an artist’s unique ability to navigate the tension that results in producing something both new and timeless. In my mind this can take shape through the artist’s story, his or her process, or both. I appreciate specific and meaningful purpose in this way. Ultimately for me though, I need to be able to know and engage with the brand. Relationships trump most everything in my book. There are several makers and artists who do these things well in my opinion. More recent favorites include: Oak Street Bootmakers, Billy Reid, Imogene + Willie, Justin Townes Earle, Shinola, Andrew Belle, Sleeping At Last, Otis James, Judah & the Lion, Tyler Sjostrom, Apache Relay, the Alabama Shakes and of course, yours truly Bare & Hatchet.

5. If you had one wish from the preverbal genie, what would you ask for?

A clean tattoo or two (or three), a cure for diabetes and another shot at Heartbreak Hill in Boston (all in a single wish).

6. What’s the first thing you think about when you get up in the morning?

Who and what can I impact most greatly today (usually on a post-it next to my bed).

7. Where will Jon Aagaard be in 10 years?

I hope to be somewhere that uniquely combines my heart and experiences. I say “somewhere” instead of a specific vocation or location for two reasons. First, I’ve learned no matter how much I try to plan or perfect, I am not in control. Second, and as we all know, this game of life can be more about the collective journey than it can be about a specific destination. Ultimately, because I’m never the smartest guy in the room, I think my road will pivot primarily on the basis of relationship. I hope to enable, develop and strategize with creators and makers via my experience and heart.

8. If you were forced to wear one outfit for the rest of your life what would you have on?

Head to toe? Detroit Tigers ball cap, a clean pair of eye glasses, a t-shirt and leather jacket, denim and a broken-in pair of boots.

9. If you were able to pick a theme song that played every time you walked through the door, what would it be?

Shine a Light, the Rolling Stones

10. Any Last Words?

Sure do! Foremost, I’m beyond flattered to be chatting with ole B&H here. I vividly recall sitting with you Jake, as you talked and whiteboarded about this idea in an abandoned warehouse in Wheaton (I believe a skateboarding video was playing in the background). I remember your initial sketches around various products, the first B&H studio - your bow and arrow and the number of events you hosted there. I recall your avid support and encouragement of other artists, specifically a young and squirrely Judah and the Lion. I remember the first photo shoots.. our trips to Nashville to meet with other makers.. the list could go on and on.. You’ve accomplished a lot in short order Jake. And it really has been a special event to be a part of.

Well, I’m back after having spent two weeks in Africa. It was such an incredible time, but way too short.

I was going with a group that Bare & Hatchet partners with called Venture Corps. Going on this trip really helped me to get a better understanding and grasp on what V.C. is about, who they are helping and what their goals are. In this post, I am going to highlight my experience and what it meant to me to be able to go on this trip. And in the following weeks I will give a more in-depth look at the leaders Venture Corps partners with.

One of the groups that Venture Corps partners with is called Springs of Hope. They are located in Machakos, Kenya and the home is headed up by one of the most beautiful souls you will ever have the privilege of meeting, Mary Musyoka. We spent three days getting to know Mary and the girls in the home. The rest of the time was spent traveling throughout Uganda and getting to know Ronnie Matovu, another of our partners and executive director of Serve for Hope.

Mary is such an incredible woman. Without knowing it, Mary was a catalyst for an enormous change in my life. The first day I met her she mistook my name for “Treasure” instead of Tricia. I corrected her and didn’t think much of it. Then, we got to talking and very simply put, she determined that based on our conversation she was right in having called me Treasure in the first place. She introduced me to everyone as Treasure without a second thought and for the next three days (I should really say the entire two weeks because everything was a learning experience), I was caught in a whirlwind of finding self worth. For the many of you that don’t know, I don’t have parents. I have struggled a lot with finding myself and finding a place that is my own. I had no idea that God was going to send a group of 20 girls ranging from 3-16 to teach me where my place is. The girls started asking me questions slowly over the time we spent with them, and when the topic of parents came up I wasn’t exactly sure how to approach it because they are children and at least here, in the US, my experience has proven that it is taboo to talk about death with children. I felt a nudging in my heart though that it was alright to let them know my parents have passed and immediately these girls started asking more questions- “what about your brothers? sisters? aunts? uncles?... Who takes care of you?” and when all I could do was kind of nervously laugh, the girls just SWARMED me and immediately started doing my hair, holding my hands and just overall comforting and taking care of me. It is an experience I can honestly say I will never forget.

That was how it was for the whole trip. Seeing the culture and experiencing the amount of care each person takes with the other was absolutely mind blowing. More than that, their relationships with God are more than just relationships. It is their way of life- God just is. He is in everything and there is no question about that. I was able to have really deep conversations with a few of the children and young adults that Ronnie cares for and I can actually say there are so few words I can use to accurately describe the reality of the depth at which they all touched my heart. They all have such powerful testimonies, and here that would be the first thing that most Christians would highlight about themselves- but for them, it was so subtle which made them that much more powerful.

I absolutely fell in love with the culture, the people, the language and the hearts of those I got to know while I was there and I cannot wait to return.

1. Where are you from?

Where am I from? Well, I moved a bunch growing up- all within a few hours of Chicago. Currently, I’m putting a pretty dang heavy stake in Wheaton. 

2. How did you get into the photography business?

It’s funny. I got into photography when I was in college, but it wasn’t a story of a kid wanting to “express himself through art” (….not that there’s anything wrong with that…). I had a point and shoot camera that was stolen. So, in my “go big or go home” ways, I bought an SLR thinking it would just be better. At first, no. Not even close. MUCH worse. An SLR just exposes how much you really don’t know. Notice I didn’t point out the photog pu…nevermind. So, I had this SLR in college, and started learning bits and pieces while taking pics of friends for fun. Eventually, when I had stuff online, the college asked me to shoot events and do brochure work. Also, keep in mind I went to a small school with no photography clubs or anything. Just like, 2 or 3 classes. (I got a C- in my Photo I class). Eventually, I saved up for better gear, learned way more, shot my first wedding and was MASSIVELY hooked. After graduating I thought I would have a few fun weddings a year to shoot with a 9-5 job…turns out I was too busy to make an interview for those jobs. So, I just stopped trying and went full time on it. 

3. I heard you just updated your studio- what new features did you add to it?

The studio! Fun stuff!!! I put in some desks and chairs to, first and foremost, feed my extrovert’s appetite. People can meet here, collaborate, hang or anything. Also, I’ll be teaching photography classes there with different levels of experience, categories, a customized speed of learning, etc. The typical chill out space for consultations and studio set-up have remained the same, though. :)

4. Who or what are your favorite subjects?

My favorite subjects are EASILY those who are most real. There isn’t any specific type I learn more towards, but when I know it’s really them, it’s a friggen BREEZE to bring out their personality. Oh, and anyone that likes Cigars and whiskey, cause I know what we’ll do before/after we’re done shooting.

5. What is your second strongest passion outside of photography?

I have to convince myself that I’m passionate about different things per season. If you think that sounds flakey, you’re right. So, let me clarify that you may be confident in your assumptions. I love a good cigar and company. So, until I finally live my personal life dream of having an in-home exhaust fan in my make-believe cigar room, I have to convince myself that cigars are warm weather passions, and whiskey by the fire is a great way to stay warm in cold weather. Oh, and I really like pogs.

6. I’ve also been told you’re kind of a rockstar. When did you start your music career?

Rockstar, you say? You’ve been talking to my mom, haven’t you. In the third grade I started to play the drums and piano; then, I added trombone to the mix. Eventually, after being in a band with my really good friend, who does NOT suck at the guitar, I learned the bass as we had struggled to find someone to record who could play it. Now, I still play the bass but, I eventually added faux guitar. I’m so thankful for that STUPID rule my mom made about practicing each instrument 30 minutes a day. :)

7. If you were a crayon color, which color would you be and why?

100,000% orange. I mean, it could be just about any shade or hue of orange. For any mega, ultra, super nerds, anywhere in the 585 to 620 nanometre scale. It’s my favorite color, and I haven’t really come across anyone who feels bad after seeing some orange appear in their life. Just saying.

8. What do you think of cow tipping?

It’s kind of like how I got into photography. All or nothing. If you’re gonna shove that sucker over, you better be sure you get her to the ground so she doesn’t swing back the other way. And I wish I could speak to this from just “hearing about it.”  All that to say, pro.

9. So, why is your name spelled with two b’s at the end?

I have theories and benefits as to why. Theory: My pops was temporarily stricken with a rough case of stuttering when naming me. And writing it in pen without clarifying was a thing in 1985. So, no take backs.   Benefit: I’m way more google-able. And it’s really just Robb. Birth certificate Robb. Not Robert. Crazy, huh?  Real reason: Parents didn’t want me to be a Junior, as my pop’s name is Robert. So….there.

10. What’s your favorite brand of whiskey?

MMMMMMaker’s Mark. Sure, it’s not the BEST out there, for sure not the worst, but it’s super available in most sane places…and always stocked in the studio.

11. Any last words?

Last words? Well, to any of you who ever take pictures for fun, or professionally, you can never take enough. At the end of the day, it’s better to figure out storage space than wish you had pictures of someone. I say this from experience with a few important people in my life passing recently, and as a reminder to myself to continue taking pictures.

1. So, Hayden, tell us about your journey as you played Anakin Skywalker in the Star Wars series -

Honestly, I was more thrilled when George also asked me to play the lesser role of JarJar Binks - but it didn’t go as planned - let’s not talk about that! #%$^&%

2. Tell me about this album you are currently in process of funding! (you can help fund this album here: http://www.gofundme.com/vinyljones) It looks really interesting and I personally can’t wait to see you reach your goal!

This project is titled VINYL JONES AND THE DOMESTIC. I like to describe it as one part Americana, one part hip-hop and one part Holy Ghost. OR hip-hop if done by Johnny Cash - if that makes any kind of sense. I mean, it does to me. :)

As you may have guessed by now I rap - BUT- I have ALWAYS been a fan of fitting hip-hop into places where it probably shouldn’t be i.e. my old new wave band KNAPSACKHEROES! that was once described as “Duran Duran being eaten by Heavy D.” When that band fell apart I needed a break from all the synth and began to fall in love w/ outlaw country & western - Johnny, Waylon, Dolly etc …

THE VALLEY OF DRY BONES lp is an album of collabos with friends both old and new. Every song is a duet. It features Kevin Max (dcTalk), Peter Keys (LYNYRD SKYNYRD), JUDAH & THE LION, Manchild (MARS ILL), Brian Bonds (Florida Georgia Line), Brian HEAD Welch (KORN) and Josh Engler (AudioA) among several others with the lp being produced by the incredible Jasen Rauch (who has worked w RED, KORN & Breaking Benjamin)

Now don’t let the genres of the artists contributing fool you - this is Americana. Story telling. Emotive. In the vein of NEEDTOBREATHE, Mumford & Sons or The Head and The Heart. I think we are on to something incredibly unique. Can’t wait to get it out unto the marketplace and see what the reactions are.

3. I also see that more than a musical artist, you are also a graphic designer- what motivates you to be so involved in the creative world?

God. I know that’s vague but honestly, God is a God of creativity. The first words in the Bible involve His creative nature. Since childhood I have always been one to “make things” as a way to express myself. It’s just my thing. :)

4. Where are your stomping grounds?

Music City, TN baby - good ol' Nashville! The hippest city on the planet. I love everything about this town. Even the tourists - come visit!

5. How did you meet your wife?

Nicole and I met on a college study trip to the United Kingdom. We spent a month together as friends, 15 hours a day and upon my return to the US of A, I sat down with her and said, “I intend to marry you”. That was 20 years and 8 kids ago. She is my world. Alongside my music endeavors, my family also has a docuTV show in development with 495 productions (Jersey Shore, Party Down South) that features Nicole in all her amazingness. We just filmed the pilot for A&E a few months ago. You won’t want to miss it once it hits the air. She will captivate you - Nicole is the real star.

6. How long did it take for you to glue that beard to your face?

Took forever in the beginning but once I realized I didn’t have to glue one piece of hair on at a time, it moved much quicker. Ha. In reality I didn’t really track it - I think like 9 months. :)

7. This will make or break our friendship… Who is your favorite comic book hero? (Cough: Batman)

I have to pick just one?!?!? COME ON! I’d say Green Lantern, Wolverine & Punisher to name a few. Before the music bug bit I spent my childhood drawing comics and had plans to move to NYC and draw for Marvel. So this here is real life. BTW save yourself a few dollars and rent the 1990 version of TMNT - it’s so much better.

8. Have you ever captained a pirate’s ship?

Hasn’t everyone?! Of course mine was in Fantasyland in Disney. Go every Christmas with my kiddos. It’s our mecca.

9. Where’d you get your bowler hat?

I’m a regular on Hell on Wheels. You didn’t know??

10. Any last words?

INTRODUCTION: "This week I had the privilege of interviewing Chris Baker, a design professor from Taylor University that actually created our Combat Crest shirt and one of our most recent shirt designs for Judah & The Lion. I personally love his style because of how versatile it is. He’s got two designs that I'm really drawn to, one is a dinosaur and the other is taken from The Great Gatsby. He’s hilarious, he loves cheesecake and if you are a college student at Taylor you better try hard to get in his class." -Tricia Kaufman

1. I am obsessed with your dinosaur design- what inspired it?

That was the first print I pulled junior year at Taylor University. It connects very strongly with my favorite children’s book Danny and the Dinosaur. The ideas of childhood and growth seem to find their way into my work more often than not.

2. When did you first realize you had the creative bug?

I grew up in a very creative family and eventually snaked my way into studying art in college. I was just pussy footing around until around the time I made that dinosaur print and had my internship with the guys at United Pixel Workers.  Good thing they slapped me around or I would be living in my parents' basement, digging holes for a living.

3. If you had to choose between having the most beautiful beard in the world or having the feet of a god, which would you choose and why?

A very weird question, but to have anything of a god would be hard to pass up. Also, there are too many other guys that deserve to have the most beautiful beard in the world.

4. I saw on the interwebz that you are originally from Pittsburgh- do you still live there? If not, what do you most miss about it? I can tell you if I lived there, I would make the three hour drive every weekend to get to the Hershey factory- on an unrelated note, I would also be very fat. 

I actually grew up just south of Pittsburgh in a town called Eighty Four, only known for being the home of the nationwide lumberyard, Eighty Four Lumber. As for now, I reside in Upland, Indiana, and I would have to say I miss Gary and Dottie (my mom and dad) the most.

5. What's your favorite program to use when designing?

Illustrator. There is no other way to go for the work I do, and after spending as much time as I do in it, there is no place more comfortable.

6. Halloween is coming up- do you have a costume yet?

I have dressed as Batman every year since I can remember, although there are some pictures of a few elementary school days where it seems I veered. I don’t really see a point in changing anytime soon.

7. What's your favorite type of project to work on?

My favorite things to work on are most definitely branding, spot illustration, and lettering.  I love to constantly try to pin down a style and work through new things. When lettering, every work is a new animal and I enjoy that.

8. Do you have a go-to snack when working? 

I don’t participate in too much snacking, I just like to design with have a cup of coffee on hand.

9. What is bakerstellstories.com? I saw a lot of really neat photography on there!

That’s my brother and sister's gig. He does video work and she takes quite a few pictures. Always great to support family, especially when their work is so good.

1. Where are you from?

I am from the great city of Wheaton, IL, which is just west of Chicago. But, I usually tell people I’m from Chicago because I think it sounds cooler.

2. If you could live anywhere, where would you live?

I would actually rather have condos in all the major cities throughout the world (NY, Chicago, LA, London, Tokyo, etc.) and be able to spend time where ever I chose. I like to travel and I enjoy experiencing other cultures…I think it’s good for us to get out of our bubbles. However, if I had to choose one spot it would probably be somewhere warm that has beaches…maybe Fiji. 

3. If you could remove all of the doorknobs from someone’s home, who’s would it be and why?

Probably my boss’ so he couldn’t make it to work.

4. What do you enjoy most about being a Co-Founder to this great company, Bare & Hatchet? 

It’s hard to say what I most enjoy about being a part of Bare & Hatchet…there are so many things. It’s great working with one of my best friends. I’ve enjoyed meeting so many new people and hearing their stories. Basically the whole experience of this has been amazing. I guess I most enjoy the whole learning experience and strategizing about all the possibilities. Wow, this all sounds pretty cliché. 

5. What book are you currently reading?

Currently, I am reading a book called The World Is Curved: Hidden Dangers to the Global Economy. I could tell you about it but I bet I’d make everyone’s eyes glaze over. I tend to read non-fiction books about economics, business theory, politics, personal development and blah blah blah…kinda boring stuff to most people.  

6. You know that phrase, “it’s like taking candy from a baby”? Which candy would you steal from a baby? 

Well first off I don’t think babies should be eating candy so I don’t feel bad “stealing” it from them, but I’d prolly steal a Kit Kat, Snickers, 3 Musketeers, Crunch bar, basically, anything chocolate. Spoiler alert I played Augustust Gloop in a 6th grade play of Willy Wonka. I think my only line was something like “Boy, I love chocolate”.

7. Which animal have you always been curious to try?

I’ve always wondered what a giraffe would taste like.

8. If you could change the color of grass, what would you change it to and why? 

I’d change it to red. People in the suburbs already stress out about their lawns, so I think it’d be pretty funny to make people stare at something red all day.

9. Where do you see Bare & Hatchet in the next 5 years?

There are so many possibilities. Over the past year we’ve already been pulled in directions we never planned for or thought about. I think it is important for us to be open to lots of opportunities that align with our brand. To get concrete, some specific goals we have are: adding more female options, having some of our gear sold in boutique stores, designing exclusive Bare & Hatchet clothing for bands (like Judah & the Lion, If you don’t know who they are you should check them out!) and eventually opening up our own store, to name a few.

INTRODUCTION: "Alcohol was abundant and Chinese lanterns flooded the swaying trees as the bands were preparing to entertain our earholes. Suddenly, an incredibly upbeat, jazzy form of Gospel music that I had never heard before, hit me. I was witnessing a modern day Sister Act, right in front of my very eyes, but instead of nuns I was looking at a burley, bearded man. This is S. Joel Norman and we recommend you get to know him now." -Tricia Kaufman 

1. Hello, there S. Joel- what does the "s" stand for?

The S. Stands for SuperDuper.

2. Has your hair always been a lion's mane, or did you get a perm? It's a perm, isn't it.

I do have a perm. Because I like to spend money on making my life less manageable.

3. Where did your mama birth and raise you?

I was born and raised in the south suburbs of Chicago and The Region.

4. How would you describe your music?

I would describe my music as gospel-flavored rock and roll.

5. What inspires your music?

I'm inspired by things that stir the very core of our souls -- questions or ordination, meaning in moments, true and passionate and unexplainable love.

6. Do you put all of your albums on vinyl- and, on that topic, how many albums do you have?

Nope. So far Traveling Light is the only album put to vinyl. I have one other official album called "Take it in Stride" which is available on iTunes.

7. How did you find your way into the arts?

I still don't consider myself "in the arts" though I think I understand what you mean. I suppose this is the best way to explain it: it's not because I can't do anything else, it's because I can't do anything else.

8. You have a deeper voice, but how's your falsetto?

My falsetto comes and goes. It depends on how much abuse my pipes are getting at any given time. By now I assume it's permanently damaged.

9. What's your idea of the perfect pizza?

INTRODUCTION: "I have had the sincere privilege of getting to know Maggie over the last few months, and I can honestly say I'm so glad we have become friends. Anyone that gets the chance to interact with her can count on one of two things, if not both: a very sweet giggle accompanied by a beautiful, never-ending supply of smiles and a slew of questions. She is so genuinely inquisitive and I have met very few people who are as invested in those surrounding them as Maggie. All of these things, and plenty more, contribute to Maggie being a very talented photographer. She works hard for the people she loves, which is pretty much everyone. So, I understand you have a twin, how do I know I'm not actually interviewing her?  

Yes! Another human being is walking around with my face. There is actually no way of knowing for sure if this is me or my twin sister. Trust is going to be a big part of this interview. 

What do you do for a living, how long have you been doing it, and how did you get started?

I am a photog. That is the cool way of saying I am a photographer. Specifically, I specialize in wedding and portrait photography. I first got started in photography 6 years ago. I actually was planning on going into the criminal justice field, but after one ride along, and pathetically crying in the front seat, I decided I did not want to get anymore involved in that career path. I used to be a Tyra Banks fan (I said USED TO, stop judging me), and I would spend some good old college evenings watching America's Next Top Model (okay, judge me for that part). Any who, I really loved the photography aspect of the show. There was a lot of creativity that went into the themed shoots, so it sparked an interest in me right away. I got a camera, a summer job, and photographed as many people as I could when I was not working. After second photographing two weddings, I was thrown into weddings on my own right after. Before I knew it, I was pursuing it as a full time job and created this business! 

You're a fantastic photographer- who takes your selfies?

If I am understanding the term "selfies" correctly, you take them yourself, so me.  #mysterysolved

What do you think of clown fish?

The first thing I think of is the movie "Finding Nemo". I'm a fan of them!

Where is Miss Maggie from?

Good ol' Carol Stream, IL until the age of 9. Then it was Batavia until I moved out on my own. I currently reside in the Wheaton bubble. 

Turn table or Walkman? I'm gonna bet Walkman.

That was wrong to assume. I am a runner, and I really enjoy listening to music while working out. The Turn table just got too heavy to carry with me though! I kid, I kid. The Walkman is what I used for jamming to tunes as a kid, so that! 

What's your favorite TV Show and which character do you most relate with?

The Office. I probably relate the most to, Creed. I think it's because we look the most alike though. 

What are some of your passions outside of photography? (Feel free to share all about your great singing voice)

I have a passion for all things food. When I am not Instagramming, I really enjoy performing my own concerts at my apartment. Audience of one (insert "sticking tongue out emoji", per Maggie)

In a world where most adults spend almost 6 hours a day in front of the TV, its nice to know there are still men and women around that will bust their butts, sun up to sun down, to pursue a dream. This week, we are thrilled to introduce you to such a man- Michael Drabik. I knew Mike while he still lived in Chicago and can honestly say I have never met anyone who has worked as hard as him to pursue a passion. It was not uncommon to find Mike locked in his room for hours at a time playing his guitar, depriving himself any human contact until he mastered that “one song”. As a friend, it sometimes drove you crazy but, I must say the hard work has paid off and I’m thrilled to see what kind of amazing things are in this guy's future. Mike now resides in Brooklyn, NY and is making quite a name for himself in the local music scene. His new EP is due to release August 31st and there will be a CD release show at Rockwood in NYC. What are your goals for this year?

Well, first and foremost, to grow as a human and musician. To enjoy every moment of the adventure. That will always be my goal. If you’re talking in terms of certain “business plan” goals I’d say, focus on playing for more colleges and shoot a video for a song off the EP I’m releasing.

If you could only listen to 5 records for the rest of your life what would they be?

 When can we expect an album from you?

On August 31st I’m going to be doing a CD release show and putting it on iTunes right after. I’ll be performing at Rockwood Music Hall here in New York City and am super excited the stars aligned for me to have it there.

You did a solo tour around the country this last year, what was one of your favorite stops?

San Diego. The juxtaposition of life in New York city and life in San Diego was fascinating. Made me think about the balance of running towards career goals but being in the moment for each part of the process. Such a delicate balance.

Strangest tip you have received?

"Don’t be afraid of writing shit because shit is the best manure." Something to that effect. I love it.

Any secret vices?

I definitely have vices but not secret ones. Up until I about 16, I’d eat sugar packets at restaurants because I thought they tasted amazing. I couldn’t help it. I used to smoke cigarettes too, but quitting sugar packets was harder. There is no Nicotine or patch for a sugar packet habit. Had to cold turkey it.

If you had a child tomorrow, what would you name it?

I’d probably be too busy freaking out about the fact that I, as a male, had a child. Then I’d freak out about the fact that not only am I a man having a child, but I was pregnant for only one day. It would be like those time lapse pregnancies you see but in 24 hours. I’d have bigger things on my mind.

How tall are you?

Tall enough for people to go “You’re tall” in a way that would make it seem as though no one had ever told me before.

Any last words?

Good people over at Bare and Hatchet. Proud to see two of my really good high school friends attacking life. The fact that someone who inspires me, promotes me as an inspiration to them, inspires me more to hopefully inspire them. So much inspiration all around. Like hitting an inspiration piñata. Does that make sense?

In an ongoing effort to introduce the bright people behind Bare & Hatchet we are happy to present a first look into the life of our newest member, Tricia Kaufman. She might look small but she has the energy of an atomic bomb and a sense of humor that could make even the grumpiest of old men smile. Tricia adds a much needed pinch of feminine class to our crew of immature men and we thank God every day that we have her creative prowess fighting in our corner. 

You are the newest member of Bare & Hatchet, where did you come from and what are you doing here?

First of all, your question now has me singing “cotton eye joe” over and over in my head, so gimme a second to let that go… Now that I’ve gotten over it, I hail from that there region near Garfield farm in Elburn. Most recently, though, I’d been living in the beautiful state of Kentucky and life circumstances brought me home sweet home. So, outside of working with two of the greatest goons known to mankind and all of their lackeys, I’m currently a nanny. And I love it.

What makes you want to create?

I create because in all reality I’m a very shy, internal processor and because of that I’ve always had trouble expressing myself properly. So, creating does that for me. It’s an outlet, it’s a means for me to show someone how much I love them and it’s what really keeps me going. I’ve always had a desire for creation and why not make that desire a life-long passion?

How hot is Tyler Sjöström?

Tyler Sjöström is so hot, I forget I’m his girlfriend sometimes. And he’s so hot, the sun is even threatened by him. And he’s so hot, we have to tell children he interacts with “hot, hot, don’t touch, ouchie”. And he’s so hot, the Fantastic Four have asked him to replace Johnny Storm, the Human Torch.

What’s your favorite song on his new record?

Most definitely Hands and Knees. For so many reasons. I am super excited for it’s release so people can partake in the beauty of the instruments and voices in this song.

Has anyone ever compared you to a middle-aged Yoko Ono?

That depends, are you comparing me to a middle aged Yoko Ono?

What’s your favorite kind of art to make?

Oh man. This is the hardest question. I think the whole reason I went into graphic design in the first place, was to avoid this question. I love art. All of it. The good, the bad and the stuff that makes absolutely no sense. My desire for creation is so strong and it’s so intrinsically engrained in me that I go through phases which coincide with my life that determine my preferred medium for the time. Haha how’s that for a buncha big words? But currently, my favorite art is handlettering. I love words. I love letters. I love the detail that goes into the shape and separation and I love challenging myself to free-hand it.

Do you have any pets?

I have two pets. I have a Catahoula leopard dog named Degotoga. I’m half Native American- half Romanian. So, I chose a Native American name for him which means “standing together”. He’s my little native standing by my side. And then I just got a kitten. She’s a little calico named Tortilla, pronounced, tort-you-la. Because I’m weird. But, also because I’m weird, I’m in process of changing her name… because she’s not a tort-you-la- but that may have something to do with the fact that my roommates change her name every single day.

In 10 years, what will you be doing?

In 10 years I will hopefully be doing something I love. And by that I mean, I hope I will have been able to make my living with my art and i will be traveling every chance I get. God only knows I can’t wait for that time to come, so I’m biding what time I do have, as patiently as I can.

Would you rather be stung by 1000 bees or be forced to wear Crocs for the rest of your life?

Oh gosh. Crocs. Never, ever. Give me bees or give me death!!

Tyler is one of the most hilarious people I have ever had the privilege of knowing. From his alter egos to his maternity belly, there’s nothing not to love. His passion for music is overwhelming and inspiring. More than being a giant, goofy man in love with his guitar, he’s a man with a heart for his friends, his family and those who he has adopted as his brothers and sisters in Christ. You would be blessed to know him.

How badly did you want to be interviewed?

I was pretty eager. Stricken with an apprehension that nearly rendered me immobile. So, yea - I’d say it was pretty bad.

What’s the name of your new album gonna be?

I don’t know yet. I can’t tell you. Is it okay that I can’t tell you cause I don’t know yet?

Where are you from?

I’m from the ol’ backwards town of San Carlos, Illinoise, also known as Saint Charles in the gringo, foreign tongue. I’ve practically grown up my entire life in the Mid-West, just a stones throw away from Windy City. Have grown begrudgingly, accustomed, as we all do, to the harsh Winters and brutal Summers, some how finding solace betwixt the two with Fall and Spring. Though the land is flat here, as it is the monotonous Prairie State, there are hidden gems cast throughout waiting to be glimpsed and tread upon as did the forerunners of days past. I’ve found living in this here land that I enjoy those more exotic places all the more. Even so, this is home.

What do you do outside of creating music for the joy of our earholes?

I have found myself in a mess of things as of late. I am the co-founder of a non profit, Venture Corps, who partners with community leaders in Uganda and Kenya. I am an amateur beekeeper and honey lover, and have been for the last three or so years. I love to ride the ol’ bicycle all round these here parts, through the forests, and down to the city and back - whether on a normal bike or on a tall bike. I rather enjoy spending time with my loverly girlfriend on adventures near and, on occasion, far. I love books, movies, dancing, and on the regs actin’ a fool. I collect bottles, buttons, and life experiences. Making new friends is a neat thing too.

What is Venture Corps?

I co-founded Venture Corps with a high school friend, Christian Young, around 2008-2009. It evolved from a passion that grew out of fundraising projects our class body did during high school- raising funds via World Vision for such projects as a clinic and school in Zambia. Upon going to Uganda in 2008 and 2009, it was no longer the short, two-week relationship many evangelical Christians experience. After several months of living with and working alongside our friends, I had grafted a new branch onto my family tree and we truly became brothers and sisters. East Africa is now another place I call home. Venture Corps’ mission is to empower people to love the poor, marginalized and neglected through acts of service in Jesus’ name. We do that by truly making every effort to listen to the partners we’ve made in East Africa, and then act with them. Practically, our partners are impacting their communities by meeting the needs they see via micro-businesses, micro-loans, forms of sustainable agriculture, school sponsorships, and whatever we, as a team, think of next.

Why music and not le painting or le drawing?

Music because it’s what gets me going on a holistic level. I’ve never painted, per se, but when I draw I get antsy and have to quit pretty quick. With music I’m generally using my entire self to create. My creative intellect, or lack there of, paired with my bodily angst bonds to form a sort of vomitous (sp?) opus of superlative madness that I, often hesitantly, call music.

Who is Greg to you?

Greg is my alter ego. Greg is my best friend. Greg is a woman in a man’s body in a woman’s pantsuit, regretfully made-up with makeup from the 70’s. Greg is the guy down the street yelling at his cat, who he lost five years ago. Greg is over there. Greg is what hasn’t yet come to pass. Greg is.

Tell us how you were feeling when you ripped your girlfriend’s earring out.

An immense wave of horror. Blood rushed out of my face and into my extremities rendering them as anchors to the floor, along with my jaw which was incapable of being lifted from the ground alongside the crimson that was her life force.

Bonsai tree or cabbage patches? Why?

Both. Mainly, Because.

Any cool scars you wanna share with the class?

One I can’t share with the class. Then there’s this other one on my middle finger from when my hand slipped using a rather sharp knife to cut the face off of my sister’s barbie doll. I was a rather demented child, wasn’t I?

Do you prefer to hang your clothes or fold them?

Neither. I prefer to have some one else do both for me.

Brian is the kind of guy you can't help but feel joyful around. He is the kind of creative genius that is always involved with something way cooler than yourself and leaves you inspired to do something adventurous and drastic just to stay on par. His band, Judah & The Lion, is killing it right now and if you are one of the few people that have not yet heard them, I feel deeply sorry for you. 

What is your favorite city to play?

Athens, GA is currently my favorite city to play. It is a college town, the culture is very enthusiastic towards music, and there is a lot of young energy going around.

How would you compare the new Judah & The Lion album to "Sweet Tennessee"?

Our new album compared to "Sweet Tennessee...." hmm, well if I may make a comparison for the sake of your understanding; Sweet Tennessee was like the movie Braveheart and our new album "Kids These Days" would be like Braveheart, but with Jim Carrey as the lead; still epic and tradgic, but a lot more fun along the way too...

Titans or Bears?

Bears man. I may live in TN now, but I know where I came from!

Can we look forward to any good "foot stompers" on this next record?

Definitely some foot stompers. Honestly, as odd as it sounds, we hope this next album will be good bumping and grinding music; we have a few on there that we think just might do the trick. [appropriate grinding of course; kind of imagine a white dad doing his version of grinding.]

I would like to see Nate in long hair extensions and eye make up at a live show. Could we try to make that happen?

Honestly, I think we should try peer pressure. If enough people told Nate to do it, he eventually would!!

You are without a doubt an amazing Mandolin player, are there any other instruments you play as well?

Thank you kindly. My first love is and always will be piano. For me, there is nothing that compares to sitting down at a piano and creating something.

What besides music gets you excited?

I love adventure and I love being on the water. Cliff jumping, canoeing, water sports, surfing, etc. get me pumped up!

What do you think Samuel L. Jackson is up to right now?

Well I just watched Django Unchained, and I noticed he died at the end...I'm positive he went to heaven though!

If I gave you $1000 dollars but told you it had to be spent helping someone else, who would it go to and what would you buy?

It could be cool to give it to a random person that needed it when I felt compelled, just to see the look on their face. . . That could be a cool moment. Otherwise I think I might put it towards something musical. Music is a huge stress reliever in my life and it has enriched the way I live. If I could buy some instruments and get some kids excited about playing music, that'd be pretty sick!!!!

Jake is the guy that literally grabs life by the horns and kicks it in the gut. In other words, he gets shit done. So many times we hear people say, "hey, we should totally do this [insert great idea]" but they never follow through. Jake, though, says he wants to do something and does it- not only does he do it, but he brings people in on his creative ideas and is incredibly encouraging of others to follow their ambitions. He's a no-excuses kind of guy with a big heart for people. This is why I jumped at the opportunity to be on board with both him and Todd. And I can honestly say it's a decision I could never regret. 

How did you get started designing clothes?

I had always been a fan of the industry and wanted to get more involved with a brand but had no idea how to do that. Then out of nowhere this photographer named Todd James, who I had only met once before contacted me out of the blue and told me about this great company called Seer Outfitters he was working with and that they were looking for new designers. It was really a God thing.

Do you think we’ll have flying cars in our lifetime? If so, would you buy one?

I would be more excited if we had hoverboards.

What do you like most about fashion? What attracts you to fashion?

I think of fashion the same way I think about any form of art, no different than photography, painting, etc… What you put on everyday is your canvas that you present to the world and it’s fascinating what that canvas tells you about the person that is wearing it. There is a lot of psychology behind the way we choose to decorate our bodies and I guess I’ve found that people who know themselves well have a good grasp of their own personal style. There is kind of a story they are trying to tell and that non-verbal communication really intrigues me.

When you’re not working on Bare & Hatchet, what are you doing?

I spend a lot of time skateboarding, painting, collecting records and recently have gotten into building small furniture pieces but I’m usually doing Graphic Design work for the man.

If you could make one law, what would it be and why?

The last thing we need are more laws! Maybe a law to ban more laws

A penguin walks through the door wearing a sombrero…why is he there and what does he say?

That is the stupidest question I’ve ever heard, I’ll have whatever you’re drinking.

Who’s given you the best advice and what has it been?

My Dad always told me to “Follow your passions” which is a scary thing when your passion is Art and everyone else tells you there is no money or future in your passion. But I’ve found that both fiscal and personally success is not hard to achieve when you are doing what you love and are committed to doing it well.

If you had a super power, what would it be and how would you use it?

Telepathy would be pretty cool, I would walk into every meeting and know exactly what a client wants.

What motivates you?

The thought of what’s to come, I’m ambitious for the future and think Bare & Hatchet could lead us to some very exciting unforeseen places.

When Kevin Marble first gave me his album to review, I knew I was going to enjoy it. I had the privilege of being present at the live-recording and I was mesmerized even before production had finished.

Upon receiving the album, I played it in my car… For two weeks straight. Yeah, I definitely enjoyed it.

Kevin, an Oregon native, has the voice of an angel (Step Brothers, anyone?). But in all seriousness, he has a very distinct and memorable voice that, naturally, flows well with his style.

His songs are deep and honest which, in turn, is very encouraging.

One of my personal favorites from his new album is, “Wide Open World”, which so happens to be the inspiration for the EP title. It’s a raw song that is almost magnetic in it’s call for authenticity in a world and society that charges us to be apologetic for who we are.

I’m a huge fan of discovering and forming opinions for yourself, so, with that being said, don’t take my word for it- listen to him.

So, is your guitar auto tuned?

Nope.

What’s it’s name?

I’ve never been into naming my instruments. I’m not sure why, but I’ll tell you who is. My sister, Kylie. That girl has a name for every single instrument she owns. I’ll leave that level of sentimentality to her.

Have you ever painted your nails?

Not that I remember.

If so, which color, if not, which color would you choose?

I would have gone with sky blue.

Where are you from?

Forest Grove, OR. Ballad town USA, home of the tallest barber shop pole.

How many siblings do you have?

Two older brothers and one younger sister- Joel, Justin and Kylie. Justin was the first songwriter in the family and Kylie got started when she saw that a couple of her brothers seemed to enjoy it.

What inspires your music?

My stories, my emotions, other people’s stories, good music, relationships.

What’s your nap time?

I am most tempted to nap in the middle of the afternoon, but have even been known to take occasional late morning naps when possible. Sleep is definitely important to me. I averaged eight to nine hours through college. It’s an investment into the time I’m awake.

Were you named after Kevin Bacon? Was Kevin Bacon named after you?

Maybe Kevin Bacon was prophetically named after (or in this case, before) me. But I think my parents just liked the name. It means kind and gentle and that generally seemed to fit.

How would you describe your music?

Singer Songwriter or Folk. My last album was more folk-rock in nature.

Any last words?

These past couple of weeks were crazy. My sister was in the ICU with a bad infection and I had to come to terms with losing her in this life. Thankfully, she made it through and is on the road to recovery. My entire family is giving God a lot of thanks right now. The album’s title, I Am Only Me, comes from a line in track three, “Wide Open World.” When I wrote that song I imagined a father imparting wisdom to his daughter. Kylie’s my sister and not my daughter, but I had her in mind when I wrote it. Kylie isn’t apologetic about how she loves. When I realized that I might lose her, I began to think about how she lives her life. She was ready to go at any moment. She loves people and Jesus with a reckless abandon. Really, I just hope I can learn from her.
