Arabic Lesson (8): Verb Tenses
Welcome to the eighth Arabic lesson. Today we’ll be discussing verb tenses. Arabic has 3 tenses: present (مُضَارِع), past (مَاضِي), and imperative (أَمْر).
We’ll start with the present tense. The present tense is the root of the verb + a prefix that indicates who the doer is. So if we take the verb ‘play’. Its root is (ل ع ب). And its present tense would be يَلْعَب meaning: he plays.
The prefixes that precede the verb: ( يـ ، تـ ، أ ، نـ )
يَلْعَب = he plays
تَلْعَب = she plays
أَلْعَب = I play
نَلْعَب = we play
The past tense is defined by having the short vowel ‘a’ at the last letter of the verb. The verb doesn’t have a prefix indicating the doer in the past.
لَعِبَ = he played
اِسْتَعْمَلَ = he used
ذَهَبَ = he went
نَامَ = he slept
For a single female doer just add a ت at the end
لَعِبَتْ = she played
اِسْتَعْمَلَتْ = she used
ذَهَبَتْ = she went
نَامَتْ = she slept
We’ll explain how to have more than one doer in the next lesson.
The imperative tense is characterized by adding a ا at the beginning of the word with the short vowel ‘i’.
اِذْهَب = !go
اِلْعَب = !play
اِسْتَعْمِل = !use
If there’s a vowel in the verb you remove it.
مَشَى (he walked) -> اِمْشِ = !walk
نَامَ (he slept) -> نَمْ = !sleep
Notic how the imperative verb ‘sleep’ doesn’t have an alef at the beginning. There are exceptions to this rule but they’re very few so you don’t have to worry about them.
See you next lesson. !مع السلامة
