The Fruit Bowl
It dawned on me when throwing out a bowl of fermenting fruit, that although I bought a heap of the stuff a week or so earlier, I hadnāt actually eaten one piece.
Realistically I knew I wouldnāt eat as much as I bought, so why did I?
My super healthy lifestyle over the last summer truly died when I spent nearly 2 months in South East Asia and this was the first step back to fitness.
It was only when considering why I didnāt eat the fruit that I realised this is something we do all the time.
How many times have you heard, āOh, I was going to call him yesterdayā or āI was going to finish that report last week.ā These sentences are usually followed by a rather trivial excuse usually explaining some sort of distraction or procrastination.
In recent months Iāve been trying to focus on whatās important and I believe that in recent times we are becoming much worse at prioritising tasks. Iāve noticed that people often over face themselves with needless tasks and get frustrated when they donāt achieve the little things that donāt really matter.
Ā Speaking about this with others Iāve realised that many people set themselves tasks that are superfluous, unrealistic and many things on our to-do lists are increasingly ānice to havesā rather than āneed to dosā.
Ā A friend of mine introduced me to a reflection technique where every Sunday he reflects on the achievements of the previous week and sets objectives for the following one. He then breaks down the stages to achieve these objectives spreading these tasks throughout the days. Yes you will always fall behind or over achieve however thatās something to reflect and analyse the following Sunday.
For me, this has been a fantastic method to ensure Iām following a positive direction, whilst using daily tasks to ensure Iām maximising my time each day. This has also made me more aware of when I over face myself with ānice to haveā objectives.
So I didnāt eat the bowl of fruit, but is it important? Although this represented a lack of following through, maybe my idea of eating heaps and heaps of fruit is merely a distraction from what is important right now. I didnāt decide it was essential for me to eat fruit but I knew it would be a nice habit to adopt, in truth this ended up in a distraction and yet again another unfinished ātaskā that gave me a sense of guilt and incompleteness.
This isnāt to say that eating fruit isnāt important, or that it is difficult to do, but I allowed an unimportant idea to cloud my focus on what needed to be completed.
Iām really beginning to understand the importance of prioritisation and focus but I know Iāve got a long way to find the best technique to use.
Itās safe to say I wonāt be filling the fruit bowl up again anytime soon, but I may grab an apple here and there, if and when I fancyā¦who knew fruit could be such a distraction!?
