โGrief, Iโve learned, is really just love. Itโs all the love you want to give but cannot. All of that unspent love gathers up in the corners of your eyes, the lump in your throat, and in that hollow part of your chest. Grief is just love with no place to go.โ

the baroness had been staring out into the crowd with a bitterness. fingers clutched to an unmarked dance card as she watched the youths dance and mingle. she stood next to the lemonade table but the area around her was bare - as if people didn't want to be associated with the honeyfield widow. she was still young - just barely into her marriage when her husband oh so -- peacefully passed in his sleep. he was rather old , wasn't he? and yet the women gossiped underneath their fans - the men circled around as they joined in their own idle gossip. she felt --- outcasted. "hmph." she finally resided to her fate and opened her fan -- aggressively. and when someone approached towards the table - she looked away.... then noticed they didn't reach for a lemonade. did they occupy the seemingly cursed bare space near her. "i would recommend you find somewhere else to stand. this spot is cursed by the dreadful widow ; supposedly."
He knew nothing about any of these people ; Everett did not keep up with the gossip of the town, nor did anyone of such status particularly speak to him outside of the Talbots and Priscilla Cavendish. With every word shared he found himself waiting for someone to point him out, to tell him he did not belong and he must leave, despite the open invitation to the lower class. He was sure when Mei spoke she was dismissing him, finding him too unkempt, seeing right through his hand-me-down suit and refusing his company, and he couldn't say that he minded much . . . but she spoke again as he made to step away and he froze, eyebrows pulling together momentarily before his face softened. If he could relate to anyone, it was an outcast. โ I would not fret, โ he finally spoke, โ I believe I have been cursed since birth. โ
"So lovely!" And she was so excited to be one of them, soon. Even if she wasn't, she loved watching others all the same. She looked over to the other young lady before her, her eyes softened from her excited state and a warm smile graced her face. Harriet Cavendish; she was her age by a year or so and she had an older sister just like her. She hadn't met her before, but her sister made sure to brief her on the noble families before their arrival.
"It's Miss Harriet Cavendish, isn't it? I'm Noemie, it's a pleasure to finally meet you." She offered a curtsey and a friendly smile. "Are you having a good time, as well? If I'm being honest, I'm quite nervous myself."
โ The pleasure is mine, โ she smiled, returning a curtsey to Noemie and wondering in that moment if perhaps she could make friends, too. Everyone looked so beautiful and intimidating, and Noemie did too, but speaking to her . . . she seemed so kind, it would be nice to have someone to talk to, someone who understood. While she had her sister, she wouldn't dare make Priscilla believe that she was not capable of finding a match. She already thought her silly, it seemed, for believing in love.
โ Oh, yes, it's marvelous, โ Harriet nodded, though something about the other told her she could be honest with her, and she found herself adding on. โ I feel almost sick with nerves. I do hope that it gets easier, don't you? It is only the first night, after all. โ

"Focus, Harriet. Do not apologize to me, get out there and make sure you aren't stuck to the wall the whole night. Wallflowers are not sought after." Everyone knew that. And while Priscilla might not have understood her sister's desperation for a love match, she knew that she had to find someone and that wouldn't happen if she was hiding away. The question caught her a tad off guard, but she recovered quickly. "It's simply a different kind of excitement now, my excitement is in finding you a match instead of finding one myself."
Somehow, she was sure she'd be less nervous if Priscilla wasn't here, if she wasn't worried of messing up beneath her watchful eye. Truthfully, she just needed to sneak off, find a mirror, reassure herself she was beautiful. A little pep talk, and she could unknot her nerves. Surely. โ I am grateful, โ Harriet stated, and it was true, even if she was also more worried. โ I suppose that means I should . . . get out there, then. โ
โโ .โฆ โ๐ฆโโ๐ธโโ๐ฎโโ๐ซโ โ๐ธโโ๐ฆโโ๐ทโโ๐ฆโโ๐ซโ.
It was odd to him. he was older and yet it was his first season debuting due to a fallen betrothal... ( his fault really. ) and the expecting mamas had their eyes seared into him. It made him nervous -- he tried to shrink further into the shadows. "It depends of her demeanor , honestly. the diamond will be a blushing beauty - with wolves surrounding her and her home... it can be overwhelming."
โ I see, โ Harriet stated, though she didn't โ not really. She envied it still, the girl that had the chance she was sure she would never get. She could not measure up to her own sister, how could she expect to outdo a ballroom of girls? She was sure he was right, that it would be overwhelming, and all of the men would not have her best interest at heart . . . but to be looked at as if she were a prize, as if she were the key to someone's happiness . . . โ I do believe it would be quite exciting. โ
His commentary brought a hint of smugness to the grin upon her lips. Calling her by name at the Queen's ball was audacious, even by Everett's standards, but she was not the impressionable kind, and her glance was locked to his steadily, with measured poise. "I'll gladly take any ears that are willing to indulge me, Mr. Bolivar, and my rambling. Especially under an enchanting night sky like the one we're graced with tonight. I warn you, I too can be quite boring" She mimicked his tone, finding entertainment in walking a tightrope between familiarity and propriety. "As for our dearest Lords, and the dancing, and the courtingโ" could she explain to him how they continuously appalled her in their veiled approaches and dissimulations? Knowing Everett, she would much rather entertain him, in charm and intelligence that were decidedly coarse, but so very real, unblemished with the falsehoods of courtly interests. But that could not be said out loud โ not there, at least. "โ I suppose their enthusiasm has worn me out already, if you'll believe it."
He frowned ever so slightly when she didn't call out his greeting ; he had only said it to get a reaction from her, not to be disrespectful. If anything, Veronica Talbot was one of few in the room that he actually did respect. โ You're a different sort of boring, lady Veronica, โ he informed her, his frown transforming into a smirk of playfulness. He did believe it, he himself more exhausted from being inside the ballroom only watching the others interact than he was after a full day of shoveling manure. He could not actually imagine being the one holding a dance card, nor the men in stuffy suits approaching the ladies. It was clear to him this was not the life he was cut out for, and Everett was surprisingly okay with that. โ How dreadful. They do seem to be an excitable lot. โ

pleased to see everett opposite of her, daniela couldn't help but sigh in relief as his tongue immediately poked fun at the excessive decor, humming through tight-pressed lips as the corners quirked up into what could be labeled a smile. " i often look up at them and wish they'd fall down atop of me, " she quipped, eyes flickering to either side of them, checking to ensure they had no unwelcome listeners as they mocked the queen's hand-selected ornamentations.
straightening her spine, eyes moving towards one of the doors that lead to the courtyard, daniela met her companions gaze once more and tilted her head. she gave him a subtle once over, her smile ever so growing as she compared his attire to that of the company they currently kept. " i must say, everett, i did not expect you to attend tonight's festivities. the queen is most lucky to have such an eligible bachelor amongst the same crowd as her beloved diamond. "
โ Careful, they would expect you to work with to broken legs. โย That was just an assumption on his part, of course, but he wouldn't be surprised ; in his experience, there was a true lack of empathy the higher in society you found yourself. There were exceptions to every rule, of course, he didn't much mind working for the Talbots, but then he didn't much mind tending to horses either. They were much better listeners than the human sort.
A sharp laugh escaped his lips at Daniela's next comment, the idea of him being an eligible bachelor, what with his age and his status . . . As much as they insisted this event was for all members of society, there was a very clear divide between them, just as he had expected. โ I fear the queen herself would see to my end, dare I so much as speak to her beloved diamond. Perhaps it would be best I leave early. โย
Priscilla tried to fight against every instinct in her soul not to roll her eyes at her sister, knowing that the one thing that would get in Harriet's way tonight and every night to follow, would be herself. It was beyond vexing knowing that her sister wanted to find a match, a love match above all things, and yet she couldn't muster up the confidence to be the center of attention. To be the one lady all the suitors would fight for. "Stop fussing, Harriet. If you didn't look beautiful, do you really believe I would have let you out of the manor?" Her voice was low, whispered as to not draw attention but sharp enough to make her point.
โ I'm sorry, โ Harriet murmured, her eyes dropping briefly โ she knew that her sister was being honest, that she would tell her if he looked silly. She seemed more adamant about her finding a husband than Harriet was herself, after all. It wasn't the marriage he wanted, it was simply someone to hold and kiss, someone to want her, to need her. โ Do you miss it? โ She found herself asking without thinking it over, her gaze lifting to meet Priscila's again. โ The excitement? โ
lucyโs gaze flickered with amusement as she took in everettโs appearanceโunpolished yet undeniably intriguing. there was something about his bluntness that caught her off guard, a refreshing change from the usual polished phrases and insincere compliments she was accustomed to. she leaned in slightly, her voice soft but laced with a playful edge. "several bottles, you say? that might just do the trick, but i suspect itโs not the wine that truly vexes you." her eyes sparkled with a mixture of curiosity and mischief as she studied him, noting the way he stood out among the finely dressed crowd. "youโre not here for the pleasantries, are you?"
she glanced around the room, ensuring no one was paying them undue attention before she leaned in closer, her tone almost conspiratorial. "you know, i find these events just as tiresome. the endless chatter, the forced smiles... itโs all a bit much, donโt you think?" she let her gaze drift back to him, her interest clearly piqued. "but iโve always believed that a ball shouldnโt be confined to just dancing and social niceties." she straightened up slightly, a hint of a smile playing on her lips. "if youโre not enjoying the festivities, perhaps youโd prefer a visit to the stables? theyโre far quieter, and i find the company there much more agreeable." her suggestion was daring, a subtle flirtation wrapped in a veneer of innocence. lucyโs eyes met his, the invitation clear yet leaving enough room for him to decide. "what do you say, mrโฆ? iโd be curious to hear your thoughts on our finest horses."
โ Do I look out of place? โ At his own question, Everett brought his glass to his lips, a poor attempt to hide the smirk on them. He was almost proud of it, in some strange way, how out of place he was here, though it was all luck where he had ended up . . . or the lack thereof. It was strange to think that in another lifetime, decades ago, this may have been the sort of ball his mother would be attending. Had he not been conceived, of course, and gotten in the way. He knew little about Lucia Bolivar's past, the sort of money she came from, but he had picked up enough hints to know it was closer to this than the life he had grown accustomed to.
When he spoke again, he was intrigued, tilting his head as if to silently ask do you, really? He was under the impression that everyone here โ with the exception of himself โ wanted to be here. It only occurred to him now that this could be more of a chore to them as mucking was to him. โ The stables, โ he repeated, the offer of looking over horses surprisingly, with as much time as he spent with them, more endearing than anything else she could have said. โ Everett Bolivar. If I may be quite honest, miss, โ he began, though without waiting for permission to speak again, โ I much prefer the company of horses to most lords and ladies. โ
Open starter! -- The Queen's Diamond Ball | Noemie Talbot
Out of all the festivities, Noemie was looking forward to dancing the most. Seeing all the other Lords and Ladies take to the floor and twirl about in their oh-so-lovely dresses and practiced dance steps made this young lady's heart warm. So much so she was swaying to the music as she watched with joy. She couldn't believe she was finally here amongst society.
She fiddled with her dance card with such excitement and wonder and she watched the floor, she almost forgot that there were others off the floor probably watching her, in turn, being silly. Once the thought came to her head, so ceased her movements though not with embarrassment but simply due to the song ending. She gave a small clap as she peered around the room, wondering who'd go next.
โ They look so lovely, don't they? โ Harriet, inching towards the other young woman, wore a rueful smile. She had thought the dancing would be what she excelled at ; she spent enough of her free time twirling around her room, after all, sometimes even swaying with her pillow for practice. But how was she meant to stand out when every woman on the floor looked as graceful as a princess?
She could practically hear her sister shushing her. Hattie knew she was only making herself nervous and in turn, making this harder on herself. But it was so hard not to listen to the doubts in the back of her mind. โ I am beginning to believe I should make a graceful exit before I am called upon. โ
open starter ft. lady veronica talbot // accepting replies; location โ the queen's diamond ball, the terrace overlooking the gardens. tw: alcohol use
As the door to the terrace closes behind Veronica, the cacophony of the ballroom is mercifully muted, leaving her ears soothed by the sudden quiet. It was navigating the advances of a rude, presumptuous, rat-looking Lordling that served as the final straw to break her patience, leading her to trade the ball room for refuge in the cover of night, outside, with glass of wine at hand to temper humors. The gardens stretched out as far as her eyes could see, blurry under a soft nightly mist. The thought of descending there to be among the trees, rid of all manner of pleasantry, called to her โ she even glanced around expectantly, thinking to find a friend with whom a genuine conversation could be held amidst some unchaperoned adventure in the gardens. But for once, the thought is nipped in the bud โ glancing back into the ballroom, there was Noemie, taking her first official steps as a Lady of society, beginning her journey toward securing a much-desired love match. All of her actions tonight held her in mind, above all. So she would behave โ die of boredom, if she must โ if it mean protecting her sister's prospects. Her eyes drift to the skies while she savors a sip from her wine. An unmistakeable glint in its fabric catches her attention, just as another member of the ton seems to make their way to address her. "Jupiter is remarkably bright tonight." A whimsy point of her finger in its direction. "Itโs currently at opposition, I believe, so directly opposite the sun from our vantage point. I would bet you could even see its Galilean moons with a good telescopeโfour tiny points of light, right around it." For all the urges she'd be containing tonight, the one to provide unsolicited information was decidedly not one of them.
His regret of arriving was wavering ; for several moments Everett would find himself considering leaving, slipping out the doors and assuming no one would really notice his absence, if they had noticed his presence at all. But there were other moments, where his curiosity won and he found himself with another drink in hand, debating staying until the end. If he had suffered through pleasantries so far, surely he could make it another hour or two . . . however long these events were meant to last.
On the terrace, he had to admit, it wasn't all that bad. He was a person that preferred being outside, surrounded by plants and nature, if not busying himself in the stable. The flowers were beautiful, and so was the woman he wasn't expecting to see there.
โ You are quite peculiar, Veronica, โ he stated after she spoke, though he did take it all in. Everett liked to learn new things, and there wasn't much talk about Jupiter around him. Not to mention, good company was proving quite difficult to find tonight ; he would happily speak with her. โ I would expect you would be dancing with wee Lords rather than speaking of moons to a stable hand stricken in years. But I suppose they are all quite boring. โ

"what a wonderful time , do you agree ?" the lord hummed softly from his corner , hiding away in the shadows away from the prying eyes of the eager mamas and their innocent and naive daughters. asif saraf was an eligible prospect. even if he shuttered at the thought. "i wonder what poor girl is this years diamond ?" he hoped it would be his sister - an easier thing to arrange a marriage. but also a harder time kicking out the unworthy.
โ It's lovely, โ Harriet smiled, having retreated a bit from the main crowd. Of course, she would later wonder why she got overlooked, but she was used to falling into the shadows, so much so that she only made it easier to go unnoticed without realizing that she was doing it until it was far too late. โ She is quite lucky, whoever she may be, don't you believe so? โ She left the other part unspoken, the part where she would give just about anything to be the center of attention.

it was nauseating.
all the glitz, all the glamour; the hushed whispers and cordial laughter. daniela couldn't stand it. even after all of these years her quick-to-quease stomach had yet to adjust to the absolute bafoonery that was high society, her disdain for balls not easily hidden as the music swelled and the talk of the ton translated to nothing more than impotent babble.
suctioned to the far wall of the ballroom, fingers twisted behind the small of her back and feeling the hard knot of her apron against her wrists, daniela frowned. it was uncouth for a member of the royal staff to act in such an improper manner, especially amongst company, but she couldn't help it. an elder staff member had swooped by, tutting her tongue at the young housemaid, reaching up to pinch and pull at a hollowed cheep to force a smile. daniela did so, against her will, mockingly curling her lips up into a wickedly devious grin before allowing the expression to fall all together once the elder had departed.
" bafoonery. " she huffed beneath her breath at the elder maid's back, eyes rolling as she peeled herself off the wall like vintage paper and dragged her feet towards one of the food tables to appear occupied. attentive.
catching the eyes of someone across the table, she offered a most insincere and painfully practiced smile. she knew better than to speak to members of higher class than her first ( it was one of the rules she actually did follow ) , turning one of the trays of finger foods so the side that housed more delicacies faced the other.
One may look at the life Everett had led and assume he would give anything to be part of the higher class. It would be a reasonable thought but alas, it could not be further from the truth. From the moment he'd walked through the doors, it had only solidified how little he cared to mingle with the wealthy. While he would prefer steady income, while he wished his mother had opportunity to see the best doctors wen she fell ill, no part of him longed to be involved with . . . this.
Waiting until the man beside of him moved out of earshot, Everett cleared his throat in hopes to catch Daniela's eye across the table ; one of few people here tonight, he was sure, would not make him prefer the company of horse manure.
โ Doesn't it cut up your peace? โ With a gesture above their heads, he held back a scoff, only so not to draw attention to them. He had been in expensive houses before, but this . . . was so much. The champagne, the suits and dresses, the endless rows of food. It was hard not to feel at least a bit spiteful. โ The chandeliers must be worth more than a year of thine pay. โ
