can someone be a 4 but not withdraw or feel the need to be different? I know that I'm different and I don't need to prove it but at the same time I'm ok with being average and normal.
uhhhhā¦PERSONAL ANECDOTE TIME
For me at least, the different-ness felt innate. It wasnāt so much a āneedā but a āthis is how I am. Iām different. I canāt help it. Iām going to take advantage of this.ā
Anyway, someone who is aware that theyāre different is going to study the discrepancies between them and everyone else, and whenever they acknowledge this, all of the non-4s in the vicinity are going to say āOhhhh there goes 4 again, talking about how different (s)he is.ā Which can easily look like the 4 is boasting about being different. Depending upon the 4, this may or may not be the case. btw whenever ppl call 4s āself-absorbedā this is what theyre talking about
Itās important to remember that a lot of 4 descriptions wereā¦not written by 4s lol
What do you mean by āaverage and normal?ā Iām ok with being average in the sense that Iām not especially ambitious career-wise, but I NEED to stand out in other contexts: being memorable, the way I dress, how I decorate etc. Itās not necessarily driven by the urge to impress people (altho if they are impressed, thatās great lol) itās just that Iām hyper vigilant of whether or not something suits me.
Example: If Iām out shopping for work clothes, I wonāt settle for something just for the sake of having business-casual clothing. If I try something on and donāt feel like myself in it, I wonāt buy it. If itās not āme,ā Itās not enough for something to look tasteful. It HAS to be me.
Worth noting that, whenever I reached a healthier mindset, I took on the āI donāt have to prove shit to you lolā attitude. Idk if thatās an integration thing, or just a personal thing. Normally Iād associate that with Fi but Iām justā¦not an Fi user.
ANYWAY 4s always withdraw to contemplate themselves/their feelings/fantasize but theyāre still capable of being extroverted lmao.
Ooo Iāll throw my few cents. Definitely most four descriptions are not written by fours, and itās pretty apparent to actually fours lmao. Itās not unquiness or being different that we seek, itās authenticity. Just being ourselves. If we happen to like certain ānormalā or average things, we roll with it, because weāre just being ourselves.
As godofwhineandtits, said fours know their different, itās already set in stone, their no point in trying too change it. This is why we tend to come off as pretentious special snowflakes to non-fours. That and our motive, authenticity. This is when we try to separate ourselves from the rest of crowd (consciously or not), we feel as though we our losing ourselves if we act too ānormalā. If itās not āmeā we wonāt go with it.
As for the being withdrawn, itās definitely just contemplation and fantasizing. Sometimes, fours will isolate themselves because we get fed up people misinterpreting or misunderstanding us (this is were the āIām too complexā mindset comes in). Luckily this is only in unhealthy levels though. Or alternatively, weāll isolate ourselves because we feel as though everyone is too ānormalā and fake, which is not fun for everyone.

In the Feeling Triad: Personality Types Two, Three, and Four
These three personality types have common assets and liabilities which involve their feelings. When these types are healthy, their feelings are the focus of what is admirable about their personalities, enabling them to become highly valued for their interpersonal qualities. When they are unhealthy, however, their emotions are out of balance in one way or another.

In the Thinking Triad: Personality Types Five, Six, and Seven
These three personality types have common assets and liabilities which involve thinking. When these types are healthy, their remarkable insights, ideas, and ability to understand things is unequaled by the other personality types: they are frequently responsible for outstanding practical, creative, or scientific achievements. When they are unhealthy, however, their thinking gets out of balance in one way or another.

In the Instinctive Triad: Personality Types Eight, Nine, and One
These three personality types have in common assets and liabilities which involve instinct. When they are healthy, these types relate to their environment and to others exceptionally well, responding from a deep wisdom within themselves, frequently as leaders of one kind or another. However, when they are unhealthy, they become out of balance with how they relate to the world and other people.

Misidentifying Ones and Eights
Both Ones and Eights are in the Instinctive Triad, both have strong wills, both are action-oriented, and both have strong notions about how to do things. However, Ones try to convince others to do the right thing (as they see it) from the standpoint of a moral imperativeābecause it is the right thing to do. They try to logically convince the other of the soundness of their views, but become irritated and less logical when others resists their reasoning. Eights, on the other hand, rely on their own self-confidence, and attempt to sway others by their gutsy convictions and sheer personal charisma. (āI donāt know if itās the right way, but itās my way.ā) Ones try toconvert those who resist them: Eights try to power through them.
The greatest misunderstanding between these two types involves their concern with justice, although the nature of their sense of justice can be quite different. Ones hold justice as an extremely important valueāmany judges, attorneys, advocates, and criminal prosecutors actually are Ones. Ones think a great deal about issues of providing suitable standards for human beings and about the specifics of how to administer a fair and equitable system. Ones at all Levels of Development refer to justice and think that they seek justice (no matter how skewed their interpretation of it may become). In any case, justice is a matter of principlesāpart of their idealism. They strive after justice and want to rectify injustices wherever they find them because, among other reasons, to do otherwise would be to fail to live up to their high moral standards and make them feel guilty.
In Eights, justice is more of a visceral response, a reaction to witnessing injustices occurring. Eights, generally speaking, do not walk around thinking about these matters, but if they saw a helpless person being harmed or bullied by others, without thinking about it, Eights would rush in to ālevel the playing field.ā For Eights, justice has little to do with abstract principles. Eights see themselves as protectors of others, and when they are healthy, they actually are. Eights are more likely to seek justice for ātheir people"ātheir family, friends, co-workers, ethnic group, and so forth. It is usually expressed in a concern that those in their care (or under their power and authority) be treated fairly. The cowboy marshal protecting the town against criminals and the union chief negotiating a just wage for the rank and file are examples of this more restricted concern for justice. With Eights, the sense of justice usually involves addressing an imbalance of power. This is quite different from the One who seeks to make sure that people are appropriately rewarded for good actions and punished for bad ones.
Of course, in their unhealthy manifestations, both types can be extremelyunjust. Ones will still believe that they are being fairāthe punishments they are meting out are for the good of the person being punished, or at the very least, for the good of society. Ones feel they need to rationalize their punitive activities. Eights do not. For unhealthy Eights, administering justice is simply meting out vengeance. (āYou hurt me or my people, and Iāll destroy you.ā āHe ripped me off. Now he has to pay.ā) Needless to say, others may question the ājusticeā in either of these typesā unhealthy behavior.
The confusion between Eights and Ones probably also stems from the fact that some Ones may misidentify themselves as Eights since they would like to have the authority and influence of Eights. They may also recognize that they have aggressive impulses and misidentify themselves as an āaggressive type,ā although they are really compliant to their ideals; the Eight is the true aggressive type par excellence. On the other hand, Eights almost never misidentify themselves as Ones, viewing Ones as lily-livered and bloodlessāmoral only because they are too weak to be strong. Although Eights themselves are unlikely to think they are Ones, other people sometimes misidentify Eights as Ones because they see them as reformers. But clearly, many natural leaders, including Eights, lead reforms when they are needed. Contrasting Ones such as Pope John Paul II, Ralph Nader, and Hilary Clinton with Eights such as Lee Iococca, Franklin Delano Roosevelt, and Barbara Walters gives a vivid sense of their differences.

ah okay so I'm not an 8 just because you said so...right, that makes sense-was I too polite, is that it? contrary to what most people on this site believe it is completely possible to be a decent human being (most of the time) and be an 8. also I would like to clarify, I'm not trying to be an 8 it's just the way I am-given the negative 'edgy' reputation we have on tumblr I can understand why a lot of people who label themselves as 8s can be seen as mistyped-I however, am not

you give off a very muted, neutral vibe. which is honestly kind of refreshing
