I’m grouping these two Ask questions together because they deal with the same subject. As always, thanks for asking.
Hi! I love your blog. Um~ I’m confused, why does the black swan pas link them to the Bolshoi?
Thanks! Tsiskaridze chose the Grigorovich version (Bolshoi / Moscow version), rather than the Sergeyev one (Mariinsky / St Petersburg version) and coached Elya and Egor to perform the pas de deux with a particular “Moscow” flair. Nikolai’s choice to push the Moscow style has raised a few eyebrows. He never explained his decision, but I read it as an attempt to better “sell” his students to the Bolshoi. I’m only guessing here and I could be totally wrong.
Why would Nikolai want Eleonora Sevenard to go to the Bolshoi?
To reiterate: I have no idea if this is the case. I’m thinking out loud here. The only thing I know for sure Tsiskaridze wants is tiramisu. And love.
Seriously though, the Bolshoi is the theatre in Russia. It’s seen as the most prestigious stage in the world. That’s why, given the opportunity, Mariinsky dancers and VBA grads chose the Bolshoi over the Mariinsky.
