Life changes in a blink 🔸4th of July weekend, noticed a pressure in my right upper chest. 🔸Hiking the mountains of Durango with lots of shortness of breath (SOB). Figuring it was the altitude. 🔸More hiking in Telluride, 10 miles at 10-12,000 feet. SOB & dry cough starts. 🔸returned home and diagnosed with “atypical pneumonia”. Meds on board feeling good & went to Camp Kesem at University of Arkansas as the camp nurse. Never felt sick with fever or any typical pneumonia symptoms. SOB and dry cough continued. Couldn’t lay flat. 🔸changed antibiotics, trying to rest with my Lucie. 🔸Follow up chest x-ray worse!! Had STAT CT scan which also saw a mass on my liver. Red flags went up, scans scheduled. First needed to drain over 2 liters off my lungs. 🔸 Abdominal MRI and full body PET showed cancer in my pleural space around my lungs, liver, pelvis, right hip, sternum, some lymph nodes. All this is what we call #metastaticbreastcancer I share this because I truly had no other symptoms. No bone pain, just a dry annoying cough & SOB. I continued to work because I truly never felt sick. I don’t care who you are or what you do, listen to your freaking bodies & take the steps to figure out what’s going on & be persistent. I’m thankful my general doctor jumped on the scans so we could get going on my treatment. I started chemo yesterday, I have liver biopsy today & my chemo port placement tomorrow. I will get chemo once a week for 3 weeks then off a week. We will continue this until we see some positive changes then add an immunotherapy trial. I have a HUGE uphill battle in front of me. But with the love & support and prayers of so many people, we will get into that remission pronto. I’m still trying to wrap my head around all this. So I need those prayers coming. I have such gratitude for the amazing family and friends in my life, both near & far. Thank you for your constant thoughts & prayers. We feel them. Keep them coming. I love you always! With God on our side, we got this. Lets get ready to rumble. It’s #MetsMonday. Class is in session. 🔹 Metastasis is the medical term for cancer that spreads to a different part of the body from where it originally started. When this happens, it’s referred to as “metastasized.” Other names for metastasis are “metastatic cancer” and “stage 4 cancer.” 🔹 Breast cancer tends to spread to the bones, liver, lungs, chest wall, and brain. 🔹 Cancer cells can also metastasize to the pleural space (the lining around the lungs) such as in my case. This may cause excess fluid buildup in these areas (called malignant pleural effusions), like the over 2 liters of fluid I had drained off last week. 🔹Metastasis uses the same name as the original cancer. So a breast cancer that spreads to the liver, for example, is referred to as “metastatic breast cancer (MBC),” not liver cancer...again, same with me. 🔹So my plan, waiting for our game plan on Tuesday at 1:15 and FIGHT LIKE HELL. My MBC is in the pleural space of my lungs, liver, pelvis, thoracic spine and ribs. Waiting to hear results on my brain MRI (the PET scan was CLEAR in my head so being positive). I always knew there was a chance of MBC for me. It’s how we live once diagnosed with breast cancer. I figured after 7 years out, my chances would go down. But people, cancer is unrelenting. You can never rest. You MUST know your normal. I knew my “pneumonia” wasn’t adding up. I never felt sick other than my dry cough and shortness of breath. So please, listen to your body and get on it if something isn’t right. 🔹Our world has been ROCKED at our house. We truly feel the love and prayers coming our way.
