     Under the circumstances, using the forensic lab at work would only lead to issues. Nobody was supposed to know she was even working the case. Her boss had ordered her to stay out of it, which should have been obvious she didn’t listen to. It concerned someone she was close to and no matter what, she vowed to make sure they were innocent. That vow was what led her to his doorstep. A friend had recommended him, assuring her that her secret would be kept safe. 

“I do wish it were that easy. Using the forensic lab at the office wasn’t possible.” A hand ran through her curls as she nervously looked around, making sure she wasn’t being followed. “You’re handling very sensitive information, so I do hope nobody knew I was even here.” 

       “I don’t think anyone even knows I’m here,” Robin laughed, stepping out of the doorway. “There’s a reason people chose to live in houses on hills in the middle of trees on a property surrounded by a fence. It’s a clear announcement of the owner valuing his or her privacy.” It was only half a joke. Robin chose the property specifically to escape the weight of the gazes and tongues of other people...if only for a year or two. He fully planned to return to a neighboorhood once he had his fill of the woodland quiet. Even Professor Robin Meade got lonely.        “In all seriousness, the equipment needed to run these tests isn’t supposed to be in civilian hands, so discretion is a given.” Robin went to his table, collected his folder and handed it back to her. “That’s all the data I could compile from the samples you gave me, both from your scene and from your anonymous test subject. Long story short, I couldn’t find anything that even suggested your subject was even there. No matching prints, no matching DNA, nothing. The subject’s shoe tread at the scene is newer than the incident you had me test for, wish suggests that he or she arrived after the fact. I hope that’s good news for you.”

       Sometime ago, Robin lost his kitchen table, buried somewhere beneath notes and chemistry equipment. It took him a week to sort through all the favors he’d been asked to do, and at the end of it all was a sigh of relief, a cigarette, and maybe the assurance that this was a one-time deal. A moot wish often made by talented people.        By the time Robin culled and organized his research findings, it fit into a thick vanilla folder, and his kitchen table was visible again. He sealed the folder just in time to answer a ring at the doorbell. “I was just finishing up,” he said. “I don’t know what all this is for but I hope it helps you in your investigations. Just...next time you need a forensics lab...use an actual forensics lab. I’m not sure I’m cut out for this type of research.” He laughed.
