Let’s all give a round of applause for The X-Files season 1 not going with a “liar revealed” plot, even though they easily could have. Were it set up the same way today Scully would spend the whole season spying on Mulder and trying to keep him from finding out. It would be some psychological thriller Death Note style thing and it would be BORING. Instead, Mulder jokingly calls her out for “spying” on him in like, the third sentence he ever speaks to her. The “spying” plot device falls to the ground with an unceremonious thud; in exchange, Mulder and Scully are able to do away with pretense and be honest with each other from the start. It may seem like a small thing, but truth and honesty is the entire foundation of their relationship, so it’s actually one of the most important decisions the writers ever made. And thank god we didn’t have to suffer through a “you were lying to me the whole time!” scene that is the inevitable climax of a “liar revealed” plot.
