Hey, so! Hello everyone. One of my close friends on here has been getting a lot of hate mail from a group of people who support/practice proshipping.
Before I say anything, I wanna put a disclaimer here:
Despite not condoning proshipping, I also don't condone hate spamming people in the askbox, nor do I think that these people should be attacked. Am I weirded out by these practices? Oh hell yeah. Will I sit here and act as if they aren't allowed to do as they please? No. Understand that this is only aimed towards those who have been unreasonably hateful and keep misconstruing my friend's words.
Now, to address what's been pissing me off just a little.
Proshipping is a term that people online use to state that they support the freedom to ship whatever you'd like, including ships that are problematic. Darkshipping is similar, in that it supports extremely problematic ships.
The reason I dislike proshipping is that it insinuates, to me, that you are SHIPPING these charaters. It means that you enjoy the dynamics and like seeing them in romantic relationships together. That is what weirds me out.
You can have two characters in a relationship that may be toxic or problematic, and you can address it tastefully. At some point, though, if you truly enjoy the ship for the ROMANCE, it becomes weird. It becomes a proship. It tells me that you enjoy this sort of romantic relationship. I, personally, am not comfortable with that. I think it's weird. I find it gross, and I don't want to see people essentially fetishize ships that resonate with trauma I have.
(Side note: If you are a proshipper, please tag your proship posts. I blocked the tag for a reason, and I have come across a few people who just... don't tag! I block the tag for my own comfort. And I unfollow people who do proship, but it's a little harrowing to see weird shit on my dash because I didn't know someone supported.)
Continuing, a lot of people don't understand the distinction that divides proshipping from handling sensitive topics. To me, that distinction is whether or not you find pleasure (romantic or otherwise) in the ship you are dealing with, and whether or not you can address the problems in the ships in question. A lot of people who proship DON'T. Not to say that all of them do, but god. An overwhelming majority do.
