On this day in 1986 at 11:38 AM Eastern time, the Space Shuttle Challenger lifted off on what would be its final mission. Just 73 seconds into takeoff, an O-ring seal failure caused an explosion near the main fuel tank, breaking the Challenger apart and killing all seven crew members: Ellison Onizuka, Mike Smith, Christa McAuliffe, Dick Scobee, Greg Jarvis, Ron McNair, and Judith Resnik. The program was put on hold for a few years before continuing on with their missions; after 30 years of service, NASA retired the Space Shuttle in 2011. To take a look back at the program’s history — the failures as well as the successes — read How Space Shuttles Works.
