American Jewish immigration is divided into three periods: Sephardic, German, and Eastern European. The first group of Sephardic settlers arrived in New Amsterdam in 1654 from Spain, Portugal, and Brazil. German Jews began to come to America in the 1840s. Some 250,000 German-speaking Jews came to America by the outbreak of World War 1. This expanded American Jewish population to cities and towns in the Midwest, West, and the SouthâCincinnati was a main hub. From 1880 to the onset of restrictive immigration quotas in 1924, over two million Jews from Russia, Austria, Hungry, and Romania had arrived in America and became the majority. By the turn of the 20th Century, these immigrants settled in larger cities with cramped living conditions; i.e., New York, Philadelphia, Boston, Baltimore, and Chicago.
There is no one specific country from which Jews arrived in America--for that reason, they have remained a minority in many countries; therefore, suffering prejudice. Judaism is not only a religion, it also represents a culture. When settling in New York, 20th Century Italian and Jewish immigrants inhabited the garment industry or earned a living by pedaling their wares. While their religious beliefs were routed in different doctrine, both groups came from the area of Eastern Europe that shared very similar cultural valuesârespect for tradition, loyalty and family. They were, as you could say, âsimpaticoâ âŚOn The Sidewalks of New York.
Catholics (which I am) and Jewsâ religion have one stark similarity: The Catholic Churchâs âMassâ had always been in Latin, and then in the 1960s, it began being said in English. The âReformedâ Jews now have most of their religious services spoken in English, instead of the long-standing (thousands upon thousands of years) Hebrew language. Keeping the Kosher laws was not established solely for religious rites, but rather for intelligent health standards; i.e., not using the same utensils for meat and dairy and not having them served together was a safety precaution against bacteria. As far as other similarities/differences between Catholicism and Judaism, both of these religions recognize the existence of one God, butâŚâŚâŚâŚâŚâŚ
Catholics â Jesus Christ was the long-awaited Messiah (Jews view him, as my friend says, "The nice Jewish boy!"); their savior is still coming.
JUDAISM â Sin is a choice
Catholicism/Christianity - All humans are born with 'original sin.'
JUDAISM - God is one, indivisible cannot be separated into three aspects/incarnations Catholicism/Christianity â speaks of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit.
And the list goes onâŚ.but one central theme, that runs through âAllâ religions, is the same: Both encourage their followers to be kind, generous people with a strong sense of community and the well being of others.
