The idea of this piece titled “Harvest” comes from wanting to create a beautiful film with no language about farming and the beauty of which is the backbone of who we are as a nation. We also wanted to experiment with how the visuals and the music pushed the story.

Farmers have fed this nation for over 244 years and the struggle that comes with it are no less difficult than they ever have been but the beauty and the honor of farming, of producing food for not only us has run deep through generations of farmers.

The farmer in this piece Neil, is a second generation farmer of the land we filmed. I remember Neil’s father farming these 80 acres for my grandmother, Gaga when I was a kid and even letting me sit on his lap, steering the combine once or twice.

This land has been in my family since before Illinois became a state in 1818 when my maternal ancestors were land surveyors and they were paid with land in lieu of money.
