We NEVER know what weâre going to end up doing
Ok, I wanna just take a moment to address all the young users of tumblr, and even the older ones that feel a bit lost right now.
America sure puts a lot of stress on asking us what we wanna be when we grow up, doesnât it?
And growing up, we only really know about the jobs that we come in contact with - firemen, police, nurses, vets, ballerinas, cowboys and cowgirls, teachers...
And really, we donât know much more as teenagers. Sure, we know we can be scientists now...or maybe go to different countries to teach children English. Maybe you were like my highschool self and thought that you could get a job just by somehow magically setting up a house to hold the children that are up for adoption, giving them a home until they find a more permenant one.Â
And weâre so pressed to KNOW what weâre going to do, that when we enter highschool, weâre already planning our classes around which college we may want to go to for a ob we may want to have.
But most of us NEVER know what they are going to end up doing!Â
I spent most of my highschool life believing Iâd be working with children, I took technical classes for it and volunteered in classrooms. Do you know where I am now? Iâm not with children. I learned that ontop of apparently being too  introverted and quiet to get anywhere in the actual field, that I actually have to have a job BEFORE I can do what it was I thought I wanted to do. There are some other reasons too, but the point is that at the end of my first year of college, after dedicating years to this one field of study, I found that I couldnât go down that path anymore.
Lost, I went 3 years without thinking about going back to college. I spent those 3 years just taking care of myself and my friends, and at one point, my dad. In that time, I learned what I wanted, explored what I wanted, watched what I wanted, and read what ever it was that I wanted.Â
And I realized some things. First, is that I ask a lot of questions. If a new study comes out, I donât just accept it, I want to know whatâs behind it. If a squirrel picks up a mushroom and hauls it away, i want to know if thatâs normal. (it is).Â
Secondly, I want to help people. Well, alright, I already knew that. But it took some time for me to realize that this wasnât just a casual thing...this was an integral part of who I am.
(I also learn about wild edible plants as a hobby, which I developed to explore more of who I was)
And now I know myself better, because I took some time to just think about myself and what is important to me and why I am the way I am. So, I insist that if you are young or just feeling lost, that you take some time to just explore your own mind and then explore the world. Youâll find that there are some oddly specific jobs out that that might really suit you, and that the job industry has 100x more pathways than you thought it did. I mean, if you can make a career out of drawing cartoons, or out of winning running contests, or out of impersonating people, or even banging on home-made drumsets made with buckets...why canât you make a job out of just about anything else?
You are not restricted to what is ânormalâ.Â
When I was little, I wanted to be a cowgirl. When I was in middleschool, I wanted to be a linguist or marine biologist. When I was in highschool, I wanted to run an adoption center. Â Going into college, I still wanted to run an adoption center. 3 years later, I was stuck between wanting to become an expert on Bruce Lee (you can become an expert on anything these days), or what I called a Pharmaceutical Botanist. (Basically knowing medicinal uses for lots and lots of plants)
I wound up going for an Associates in General Science with intentions of becoming a Nutritionist with a Bio-chemistry background.Â
What does all that mean? It means I want to help people by telling them what is good/bad to eat, the best combinations of foods to eat, and why. I will be combining my two biggest loves- food, and helping people.
And Iâll have fun learning other science in the mean time!Â
None of this was in the realm of possibility when I was growing up...no one tells you that you can do things like this.
 So, Iâm telling you now.Â
Get to know  yourself, like really deep down. What do you love the most? What do you spend your free time thinking about or thinking about improving? What is your greatest skill in life? One that you can do without hardly thinking about it? (Mine is asking questions.)Â
Donât feel pressured to know exactly what path you want in life. Keep your mind open and always questing for knowledge in your biggest interests. The chances are high that youâre going to change your mind at some point in your life..or if youâre an athlete, your career might end before you even get to retirement age. I give the same suggestion to you, as you might get bored when you canât fill in your time with training anymore.
Know that the richest and most powerful people in the world became that way because they found something they liked, and decided to follow it and take it as far as they could. They succeed far beyond those that were simply born into it. That means that thereâs hope for everyone.
Also, if you like the idea that everyone can make a change and succeed, I have a blog that continues to post about the hope of the future and the people in general. I often post stories of success and kindness, too, as proof of the power of people.
If you want to see that blog, itâs https://crawkid.wordpress.com/ :)Â
