final poem
The embers burn hot forever
Taking with them: our delicate ecological balance.
The mātuhituhi; Adam’s mistletoe; piopio; and the Waiautoa forget-me-not.
All gone and already forgotten. Never to return.
Raukumara; various different moss species; kowhai ngutu-kaka;
and the 125 remaining kākāpō: all fight for their survival.
But it is not up to them.
The embers burn hot forever
Taking with them: indigenous agency over the land.
Māori believe in a deep connection between humans and nature,
Exercising kaitiakitanga over our endemic species and the mauri of the forest.
Western notions of ownership have diminished that right,
but tangata whenua continue to fight for the survival of
their identity and their environment.
The embers burn hot forever
Taking with them: our "clean, green" identity.
Our forests absorb large quantities of carbon,
reducing the effects of global warming.
Deforestation destroys our environment, the essence & purity of Aotearoa
The consequences are irreversible, threatening the survival of humanity.
The changes are up to us to.
The embers burn hot forever,
And ever and ever and ever

Mt Vic terrain map
This map shows a breakdown of the end of the walk, where they encounter the container. And then once they exit the container, they’ll wait in the park for the other groups to come through. There’ll be another teacher with them at this point to facilitate a discussion about their experience.
