Everything seems hopeless after Ruri was dropped from her company, but is all hope truly lost?
A/N: Apologies for such a long wait ! College assignments killed off my writing motivation so I wish I had this out sooner. The wait for the last pov for this part wonât be as long, promise <3
Ruriâs Account: Slow

âYouâre not what we need right now Zyanya. Your time with us is over.â
One sentence and everything was over. Again.
The sun begins to set over the trees in Aeracuraâs Green. I look down into my reflection in the pond. The water reflecting the pinks of the sky above. It would be a beautiful time for pictures. If it didnât feel like the good weather was mocking me. Since I had to leave Knock Out Iâve just felt.. lost. When this happened before I didnât feel⌠whatever youâd call this feeling. All Iâve done is spend the last few days roaming the city. Waiting for something Iâm unsure of. As the sky continues to darken I take that as my cue to get home. Taking one last glance into the glistening pool, at my distant expression that seems to ask, âwhat went wrong?â  Â
The bus home is quiet. I couldâve walked, but itâs getting dark too quick. I double check my headphones to make sure theyâre plugged in, one too many embarrassing experiences on public transport has left me cautious. I stare out the window, listening to some upbeat track that juxtaposes with the mood Iâm in. Until my phone dings.
Junimusic has published a new video
I canât open my phone quick enough. Juni, or well Junimusic, is an up-and-coming composer I follow. She has only posted demos but sheâs crazy talented. I donât understand how she hasnât blown up yet. Her compositions are simply beautiful. I first found her during a rough patch while I was still in Seraphim Records (my first company). It was a couple months into my training and just had one of those bad seasons you know? Every trainee gets them, when everything gets too much at one point. The mentors feel more critical than usual even though theyâre just the same, and you no longer feel good enough or you begin wondering if this is even worth it anymore- you get the gist. When I couldnât sleep one night I heard one of her violin pieces, and it was gut-wrenchingly fantastic. Thereâs no words I could string together that would give it justice. Though it felt just like a pair of non-existent arms wrapping around me, and telling me âI understandâ. Since then Iâve been her self-proclaimed biggest fan.
Every time I go through something, Juni Isnât far behind with a song. It feels oddly convenient, as if she knows I need something. Obviously she canât, cause she doesnât know who I am past the screen. Itâs a bit parasocial of me but.. It feels like weâre connected somehow. I keep that to myself though. Like always her most recent song is up to usual standard. Yet itâs less melancholy than usual. Gentle and calm, but hopeful. Comforting. I smile slightly for the first time in the last few days. The bus comes to a stop, and I get off to make my short walk home. As it drives past, I swear I recognise a head of Navy blue and blonde, but on second glance itâs not who I thought.
Days pass like usual. I wake at five in the morning. I get up and workout. Seven hits and I try to practice my usual dance routines, but itâs no use. At half eight I walk to school with my younger sister Kaia. She tells me how strange it feels for me to be there, nothing against me, sheâs always went to school by herself. School passes in a haze and we walk home together. She complains her math teacher gives too much homework. I promise to help her this evening. We have dinner. We do our homework and studying. I sit starring at my ceiling until I fall asleep at eleven. I repeat the routine the next day. And the next. And the next. I try and move on. Itâs no use. I have to find another dream but⌠I know nothing will come close.
One morning in my form class, as I sit catching up on some of the work I missed from taking so much time off. A group of friends talk behind me, I knew them years ago, but after I moved away for Knock Out I lost contact. It seems theyâve gotten into idol music since then. I hear someone mention a new album announcement and another has bag charms of different group logos. They talk so loud. I wish we were allowed our phones so I could put in my headphones and block them out. Then I hear something something audition. Which makes me drop my attention on my work, just for a moment.
âItâs such a shame they are hosting auditions here then they never even bring tours here!â
âI know right itâs ridiculous! I would sell my kidney to have a chance to see The Cage without having to travel for them.â
âI think it would be cheaper for you to just travel.â
âThat is besides the point.â
âStop getting sidetracked, auditions, should we do them? Even for the craic, it would be fun!â
âYeah why not? I canât dance but Ravenshade isnât known for super strong dancers anyways.â
âYou donât need to dance, look at Kathy she canât.â
And the conversation fizzles out in my brain. Ravenshade. There was a trainee back at Knock Out that came from there, apparently he got moved because Knock Out were looking for one last person for their line up and the companies were (surprisingly) friendly with each other. I think he got in, I didnât see him much in my last weeks so I guess Iâll have to wait and see if he debuts or not.
Ravenshade bounces around in my head like a tv logo on a standby screen. This is another opportunity right? Another chance⌠I wonât pass I know. I need to be realistic. I canât keep chasing this one dream that wonât come true. As much as I want it. I push it down down in my low priority mental list but it keeps creeping up throughout the day. Even on the walk home itâs all I think about. The little voice in my head keeps saying you should audition Ruri, no harm if you fail! Another says you need to move on. Both make good points that are difficult to ignore.
As I begin my nightly social media scroll, I decide to look at Knock Outs socials for any new group announcements, nothing yet. The little voice returns again, egging me on to audition. I donât listen, instead I look at âthings to do when boredâ so I get off my phone for once, and maybe even find a well needed hobby. Itâs far too tempting to look at the Ravenshade page, maybe I should? I mean a quick look wouldnât hurt that much.
At the top of the page there it is. Ravenshade auditions. I ponder the idea for a few moments and more. I have the chance to get my dream back, why am I hesitating so much? Then it clicks to me. This is another chance. I fill in the form, without a second thought.
Two weeks later Iâm in the audition room for the third time. Nerves racing through my chest. My hands pulling at the bracelets on my wrist to ground me before I get called in. When Iâm in itâs a blur. I step outside regaining my breath. They asked for everything. Vocals, dance. Thankfully I had things prepared for both. Their faces were stone cold the whole time, no emotion or expression at all. Thatâs never been a good sign. At least I tried. I tell myself.
It only takes my breath becoming stable for the tears to begin. I know for a fact I flunked why am I kidding myself? I cry ridiculously hard in the alley behind the building. It honestly is a bit pathetic. It felt like weeks worth of tears had built up as I couldnât get them to stop, couldnât shove them down with positive affirmations. All I could do was furiously wipe them away as more kept falling. My sleeves were soaked when they finally did stop. Gods this is embarrassing.
On my way home I stop by the nearest shop, purchasing a comedically large tub of honeycomb ice cream and a spoon. The shopkeeper gave me a funny look at the till, possibly judging my puffy eyes and slightly wet face. I ate it while walking, while still sniffling the entire time. Half of it was gone when I got to the door of my house. I curl up on the sofa to eat the other half and begin crying again. I give up on fighting it and just let it happen. Tasting a salty sweetness in my mouth from the blend of honey and tears.
Twenty minutes later I relax. Only because I ran out of tears in my system. Its an odd relief, knowing I cried so much that I probably wonât cry for another month. I pour a glass of water and return to my corner of the sofa. I pick up my phone to look through my movies to watch list, when I notice a bunch of missed calls from the last hour from a unknown number? Hesitatingly, I ring them back.
âHello is this Ruri Zyanya?â
âThis is she.â
âGreat, this is Lorelai Astor from Ravenshade Entertainment, weâre calling about your recent auditionâ
Oh nononononononon why did I keep my phone on silent Im such an idiot oh my days
âWeâve been attempting to contact you to say weâre very pleased with your performance. Weâd love to accept you into Ravenshade starting from-â
OH MY YES
I have to prevent myself from leaping out of my chair in excitement, I keep my composure, agree calmly, get all the needed details, and end the call. Then I jump out of my chair. I got my second chance. The world wasnât going to end! I could still become an idol again! I donât have to find a new career! I dance and spin and cheer, feeling a long lost joy that feels amazing to get back.
Starting anew in Ravenshade felt like a breeze in comparison to Knock Out. I adjusted to the new routine fast. We started at six instead of five. There was way more focus on things outside of performing. A few weeks into my new training, I got the chance for a mini studio session. I had never stepped foot into a real studio before so the whole experience was new and exciting! It made me feel like a real idol for a moment. Stepping into a professional studio felt like a dream itself. But something or well, someone, stopped me in my tracks.
Sitting behind the desk was Juni. If not it was someone who looked eerily similar to Juni. She sat there with black headphones on, lost in her own little world. She wore a shortsleeved white blouse, a black vest, and black pinstripe wide leg trousers. I looked over her, up and down multiple times, trying to make sure I had gotten the right person. She turned around, taking off her headphones, and welcomed us to the Ravenshade studios. Introduced herself as âJuniper Mayfieldâ. That was when I knew, this was her.
The entire time all I could do was stare at her. I was transfixed. Comparing her features to my memory. Her wide eyes a dandelion yellow, her lips a dark blood orange, the faint outline of a scar on her right cheek. She was gorgeous, that I knew from watching her videos. But in reality she was something else, straight out of a movie scene. Yet she was sitting in front of me. Directing people with her melodic voice.
The next time I was free I found my way to her office studio. It made me feel like a stalker, being secretive and hunting her down. But all I wanted to do was tell her how much her music means to me, Iâll be out of her hair then. I spotted her working through her small window. I donât want to disturb her peace, this was a mistake I shouldnt have come. Five minutes. Just say you like her work! In another thought I knock rhythmically at her door. She turns around and we lock eyes for a moment. I shoot out of view, embarrassed. But I take a breath, and I open the door.
âIâm so sorry if Iâm disturbing you, itâs just, you took our studio workshop the other day right?â I speak to her while slowly closing the door and stepping uncertainly into her studio. Taking another breath because I canât fathom how Iâm doing this. Today she wears a navy cardigan against a similar blouse, with a brown tartan skirt.
She responds in a quiet yet ariose manner, âYeah I did, do you have any questions?â
âKinda, youâre Juni right? The one online that posts your music? I just wanted to pop in and say that youâre work means a lot to me. Iâve been following your work for a while and Iâve became a huge fan. Itâs really beautiful.â My voice softens in the last lines, and I fiddle with my bracelets. She sits sits wide-eyed in silent.
I turn to leave, knowing I crossed a line. âIâm so sorry, youâre busy Iâll go.â
âWait, itâs okay. You can stay.â I stop in shock and turn back around, Juniper begins to pull a chair over and gestures for me to sit down. And I do.
It felt odd. Talking with her. Someone I had only ever seen on a tiny screen. Who was having a normal human conversation. With me. About her life, her dreams, her art.
We continued meeting after that, just now and then. Weâd run into each other occasionally. We became good friends. I was drawn to her like a planet in orbit.
And then she was gone.
I had another studio session, but Juniper wasnât taking it anymore. Which was strange, cause I swore I had seen her about this morning. Maybe sheâs sick today? I went to her studio at my usual time and, all her stuff was gone. She hardly left the companyâŚ
Did she?
I never even got her contact information or anything, I could message her on her music account but would that be weird or crossing a line?
Days passed, and I still never seen her around. I slowly accepted that maybe the last while was simply a dream, and now I had woken up. There was an odd feeling around the situation, yet I brushed it off as unnecessary concern. It still sat there regardless.
Soon, I was selected to be a dance extra for a Key2Heart music video. As much as I was excited for it, it couldnât subside my worry for Juniper. My brain has been circulating thoughts of her since. Why did she disappear the way she did?
On set I met a girl called Rose, sheâd been in Ravenshade for about a year now. She was sitting beside me when we were getting our makeup done. She began to make small talk,
âItâs strange being on set like this isnât it? I didnât expect to do something like this during my training.â
For a second I paused, she is still a trainee? Her? She had this glistening aura about her, something that only idols seem to have. Like when they speak the lights catch in all the right positions, making them sparkle, even in the dark. It made sense she was selected for this.
âThis can be pretty common actually! Iâve never done it myself but some other trainees I know have.â
As we were transformed for the screen, we talked and talked. Then we were brought our separate ways but promised to find the other when we got a moment.
After I finished my scenes I looked out for her, thankfully sheâs very tall, and her white hair makes her stick out in a crowd. I go to the sidelines to get a drink and to carefully wipe the sweat off my forehead. In my search I think I see Juni on the other end, but I turn my head away. What would she be doing on a music video set? I snap my head back because it is Juni! I beeline across to her with impatience, hoping she noticed me and doesnât move.
âJuniper hey!â I shout out. âI didnât know you were working on sets now!â
âYeah, they uh.. moved me into idol training for a bit.â
âReally?â Odd, I didnât think they could just do that. âDoes that mean you wonât be doing the studio sessions anymore?â
âDoesnât look like it.â She gazes defeated at the space behind me, a halfhearted smile.
âAw that sucks. I really enjoyed them you know.â
âIâm glad.â
Rose comes over and I introduce the two. Itâs mostly me and Rose that do the talking, Juniper is uncharacteristically quiet. Maybe sheâs just like this with new people? But I donât remember her being like this when we first met. She gets called for scenes before me and rose do so we continue our conversation, it didnât feel like anything had changed.
I canât shake my worries through the rest of the shoot, thereâs something off that I canât place. There was almost a shadow cast over her usual demeanour. As soon as the director yells âcut!â Iâm searching for her. I spot her face in the back of the crowd and I follow suit. She rushes out the door and when I finally get there sheâs gone again. I stand defeated. Knowing that may have been my last chance to see her again.
A few weeks later, Rose had came to me to say that Juniper was in the same group as her. The relief when I heard the words escape her mouth. I prompted Rose to invite her to hang out with us. Thankfully she did, not often but I was glad to see her face again. I had wanted to check in about what had happened on set that day, but it felt awkward to bring it up now. I had a personal theory it was just an overwhelming experience, especially as she was new to the whole idol thing.
The three of us had our own little group now. Connection makes the training more bearable. Itâs something I never understood about certain people from my past companies. So driven, and so competitive, they view everyone else as a threat. They stick to themselves. They donât attempt to make idle chit chat. They become isolated and agitated. But why do that to yourself?
I know that the chances of any one of us debuting is slim, the chances are even slimmer for all three. Being an idol is a game of chance, not necessarily survival of the fittest. Itâs ideal to make the most of it before it can crumple down.
A year it was that I was in Ravenshade at this point. Previously it was two years in Knock Out and a year in Seraphim. When I passed the year marker in Knock Out I thought this was it! I was finally getting somewhere! Then another year passed, and I was tossed aside. Like a tissue, used and no longer any use. Ravenshade was my final hope, yet it was beginning to falter like everything else. Me and Rose had recently graduated, and we both bordering nineteen. At best we had two years left, debuting around twenty isnât common but still possible. Realistically we had one. I still held onto hope, despite its fickle nature.
Some time passed and I had found myself in an empty room alongside Rose and Juniper, and three others I recognised. First there was Heather, one of the junior trainees who always seemed to be at the top of everything. Then there was Gianna Sinclair, I had known of their presence in Ravenshade for a while. Daughter of Lilianne Sinclair, and sister of Rainer Sinclair. Her appearance here had been discussed heavily amongst the trainees. As they never appeared to be the idol type.
Then there was Aelita.
Someone I wish I didnât know.
They were a contestant on this survival show âPath the Stars.â Many trainees from Knock Out were selected, including one of my friends Ivy. Whom I had watched the show in the first place for. What I learned about Aelita is that she is the definition of the trainees that I hate. The ones who take their personal isolation out on everyone around them. She was ridiculously rude to Ivy (and everyone else on there too). Her and Ivy had both been training the longest, Ivy since she was ten and Aelita from when they were eleven. In terms of time spent, Ivy was their only other competitor.
It was the first time I wished that this odd situation wasnât going to be the moment I was told I was going to become an idol. Then it would mean I had to be in a group with her. Something I donât think I could stand.
I soon bit my words when the Kato Halley came in and said the words I wished to hear for half my life, that I had just prayed against mere moments before.
My previous convictions slowly disappeared, as I looked at Rose and Juniper beside me and quickly realised I was doing this with them. My idol, and my new best friend. Hope really is a fickle thing, but once you grasp it.
Tomorrow at 12:00pm IST, my cover of Maze in the mirror by TXT drops on my YouTube! I have mentioned this so so long ago and Iâm glad to say that it is finally done :] As a last sneak peak here is the artwork ! This song perfectly captures the vibes of Heatherâs POV for part 2 so another minor spoiler for whatâs ahead now that part 1 is coming to a close â

Summary: A day of Rose's new life, doing chores all day and helping lost little girls before finding herself lost.
Warnings: Angst (who's surprised), negative thoughts of self, probably slightly wrong things about the Hobbit so please correct me-
Word Count: 2.4k, these chapters will probably be around this length because if I tried to make them around 7k (which I'd love to), we'd be finished very fast
Tick. Tock. Tick. Tock.Â
The never-ending chimes, through night and through day. And every hour, the sound resembling film reels starts before the resounding dong resonates throughout the orphanage. 2 oâclock. Dead of night, the only sounds heard being the grandfather clock and occasional animal outside. But, some nights there is more. Some nights, two young girls sit in the dark, cold sitting room. Some nights, their chattering lingers in the air the next morning, creating a livelier environment the next day. As if the hope they talk about is heard by each girl in the orphanage.
Unfortunately, hope isnât always something they can rely on and trust. Some nights, they speak of unpleasant things, of things that a child shouldnât be burdened with, of the war that has torn their family apart.
âI wish they didnât have to leave us.â
Rose looks at her sister, she understands her sisterâs worries. It was only a natural response to being sent away, even if it wasnât their parentsâ fault. But right now, Lily needs someone to blame.  âThey didnât leave us, not forever.â
Lily sighs, sheâs the older sister, she should be comforting Rose but instead, Rose seems to be the one who has everything figured out in terms of dealing with their new life. But Lily canât help but not believe her, thereâs always a chance that they wonât come back. âYou know as well as I do that the chances dad gets back from war alive are slim.â
And yet, Rose stays firm in her faith. âYes, but mumâs a nurse, she isnât in as much danger. Sheâs not on the frontlines. Sheâll come back to us, I know it.â But her sister remains stubborn and Rose tries instead to find a way to lighten the mood. âI hope so anyway, I couldnât imagine spending years in this dreadful place.â A look of pure disgust graces her face, âWoolton pie everyday for years? Not with how much Marmite Mrs. Howard adds.â
âWell as soon as I turn 18, Iâll be out.â
Rose looks at her, unimpressed. âYou donât have to rub it in. It would be more tolerable if Mrs. Howard would light the fire. There isnât that much of a shortage of wood.â
âI think she might rather if we all perish from the cold, less mouths to feed and more rations for her.â They both laugh lightly, their moods successfully lifted and the gloom of what may or may not come is lighter.
Until the clock chimes again. Lily stands as she says, âWe should get back to bed, night check-in should be soon and we donât want to be caught down here.â She starts walking towards the stairs and is cautious to step on any creaky planks. She reaches the first step before she realises Rose is not behind her. She looks back and sees Rose still on the ground in front of the fireplace. Lily notices that sheâs acting strange, staring into the fireplace like itâs hypnotising her, as if something was there.
âRose?â She whispers harshly, the younger girl breaks her trance and quickly, but carefully, follows her sister. Lily is concerned for her sisterâs unusual behaviour but continues climbing the stairs and decides to ask her another time.
The sunlight shows no mercy to the 8 girls sleeping in the room with no curtains, groans and grumbles can be heard throughout the room. Suddenly, the door flies open and in comes Mrs. Howard, carrying a brass bell that she rings throughout the quiet room. âLetâs go girls. 7am. Time for the morning chores.â She looks around the room at the slow-moving girls, ranging from ages of 11-16, and notices one girl already standing beside her bed, ready for the day. She raises an eyebrow at her, âEager to work today, Rosalind?â
Rose nods firmly once, âOf course, Mrs. Howard, The early bird catches the worm, as you always say.â Mrs. Howard remains suspicious but nods and leaves the room.
As the other girls groan and slowly pull themselves out of their beds, Rose finishes folding her pyjamas and placing them neatly at the end of the perfectly made-up bed. Folding her hands in front of her, she leaves the room in an orderly fashion to go downstairs and receive her chores for the day.
Looking at the blackboard at the bottom of the rickety wooden stairs, she glances down the list of names until she finds it; R.V.. There she finds her list of chores for each part of the day.
Morning: Brush the living space and communal areaâs floors and laundry for girlsâ room ages 4-10.
Afternoon: Help prepare dinner and do the dishes from the meal.
Evening: Clean all windows in all bathrooms and return clean sheets to girlsâ room ages 4-10.
Night-time: Take rubbish out of kitchen bins and clean fireplace.
Another busy day ahead of herself, but at least it beats hiding from the Blitzkrieg back home. And so, she starts her chores. First in the house to start and always with a smile on her face.
Mrs. Howard stared at her strangely as she watched her, she always did because Rose always seemed to be pleased to do the chores. And so, Mrs. Howard would increase the hardship of them more and more over those two weeks since she arrived. But never, never did it seem to dull Roseâs shine.
And so, as Rose walked into the room housing the youngest girls, she saw a familiar face. A face she had spoken to occasionally over that past fortnight. A face most commonly buried in a certain book. The Hobbit.
âHow far have you gotten today?â
The girl looked up at Roseâs voice and beamed, âRosie! I stayed up a little later last night so I could finish it again.â
Roseâs eyes narrow as she moves to the first bed to strip the sheets for the wash. âWould that be the 3rd time youâve read it now?â
â4th. I love it so much, I canât help but read it over and over.â
Rose smiles, adding the sheets to a basket and carrying it to the next bed, the one beside the little girl.
The girl sets down her book on her nightstand, the page number burned into her head for later. She watches Rose hum as she smiles and works away. Then a question dawns on her.
     âRosie?â
     âYes, dear?â
     âCan I ask you something?â
Picking up on the smallness of her voice, Rose stops fiddling with the sheets and walks closer to the girl, sitting on her knees in front of her. âOf course, dear. You can ask me anything.â
She looks down at her hands in her lap, shuffling and shifting nervously before she gets the courage to continue, and Rose waits. Patiently waits with just a smile and kind hazel eyes.
âIf The Hobbit were real, where would we fit into it?â
Rose thinks, and she thinks hard on this question. For she knows, to the girl, it may be more than a childâs mindless curiosity and wonder. She knows that this book may be her last grip on that childlike wonder or it may even feel more like reality than the war-ridden world they call the only reality.
âWell I believe we have the ability to choose where we fit in any story.â The girl looks at her, confusion but curiosity evident in her eyes. So, Rose continues, âIf you would like to be from Lake Town, then you may strive to be someone from Lake Town.â She notices the girl starting to understand but the hope in her eyes is still small.
Rose takes another moment, a sly look coming about her face, âBut, if you wish to be a fantastical creature,â her voice filling with wonder as if she were reading the story to the girl, âthen try your best to achieve qualities you see in them that you admire.â
Her last chore for the day. Rose had just taken the bin bag out to the bin at the side of the orphanage. Now it was time for her last task before bed. Well, before her and Lily would meet at the same fireplace she was about to clean.
She could never understand why Mrs. Howard would make them clean the unused fireplace, for if it was never to be used, why should it be cleaned every night as if it were?
And still, she grabbed a mop bucket, filled it with hot water she had been boiling on the kettle before taking the rubbish out. Pouring it into the bucket with a very little amount of washing up liquid, to preserve the bottle as long as possible, and grabbing a sponge, she brought it all to the fireplace.
As she waited for the water to cool down a tad, she grabbed the duster and started dusting the mantelpiece, along with the trinkets sporadically placed to bring some style into the worn and bare room. Rose made sure to lift each piece of clutter to dust as she knew Mrs. Howard would check every little crevice for dust.
As she cleaned, she remembered a fond memory from back home, before the war. A time when the biggest problem was getting their home cleaned diligently for a gathering. She had been dusting the mantelpiece, The authentic wooden frame, varnished to perfection, and decorated beautifully with photo frames of the family smiling brightly. Roseâs favourite was always of her parentsâ wedding day, along with the story that would always be told with it.
Her mother stood in the beautiful white wedding dress, floor length with a slight train and the lace covering decorated with countless embroidered flowers. Rose had always loved that dress, she dreamed of wearing it herself some day. She always hoped to find someone that would love her like her father loved her mother, someone who would wait for her, as long as he did for her. She had been adamant that she did not want to marry as early as her sisters and friends had. And he had been so smitten. Everyday, he would be waiting outside her door to walk her to wherever she had been planning on going for the day. Whether it was just a quick stop to the market to pick up food for dinner on behalf of her mother or a day out shopping and gossiping with her friends. He always made sure to be waiting outside the door. He had a night-shift job working as security at the local bank then and as soon as his shift would end, heâd race to wait outside her door.
From the very beginning of his courting her, until the very day she decided she was ready to marry. And that day had been one of his happiest and it was clearly shown in the photo. His hand lightly caressing her cheek and his loving eyes staring at her as her head was held down and a bright smile possessing her face. She loved the pose they were in, his father still evidently expressing his love for her even when she wasnât looking, she always saw him with that look, anytime her mother turned her back for even a second and his gestures would shift into that same face. Even 17 years later.
Rose shook her head, pulling herself from her mind and focusing herself back on the chore. She placed the duster back in the kitchen wardrobe with the floor brush and mop and returned to the fireplace.
She heard faint giggling and whispers from upstairs as she passed the stairs, it was not yet bedtime, however it was bordering on it. She had to finish cleaning soon or sheâd be late for the night checks. And so she knelt down, picked up the sponge, squeezing some water out and got to cleaning.
Today was different. She couldnât really explain why or how, but it had been different. There was something in the air, almost. The afternoon brought a change, she felt stranger. More out of place than normal. She had been feeling out of place here since the start and she always did her best to get rid of that, she never knew how long it would take before she could go home. But it felt more off now, she felt like she should be doing more. She should be more. There had to be a reason, she couldnât accept any different.
Her thoughts were racing, why did she feel like this? Why did something change today? Why couldnât she just be normal, accept this was all she was here for? She had helped the little girl who loved the Hobbit, yes. But was that it? Was that all she could do? Her mother was across seas saving soldiers, mending them back to health to fight again. To save everyone. She was there, but Rose was stuck here only good for cleaning a bloody fireplace-
     A crack.
     She froze.
     There was a crack.
     A crack in the fireplace.
     But how?
She knew she had been scrubbing harshly as her thoughts had angered her but no.
No, she couldnât have done this, a giant crack along the back of the fireplace. She hadnât even been cleaning near there.
But how could it be possible? She guessed the stonework was old, but that old? And it wasnât even being used, none of the girls there had seen it being used and some had been there since being a babe before the war.
No, it couldnât be age. But what else?
And then she saw it, the cracks made the shape of something.
A face. How strange. A face made of cracks in an old, unused fireplace.
And then it started to dawn on her, a crack in the fireplace. She would be in deep trouble. Mrs. Howard would not be happy at all. She rushed to put her cleaning supplies away, maybe if she rushed to bed and wasnât caught at the fireplace, she may not notice. Maybe she would skip her inspection today, she had before. Yes, it would all work out.
But then what? What if she got away with it but then the next girl to clean the fireplace was punished for it. This was very bad, how could she fix this?
She thought and thought and thought as she emptied the bucket into the sink, returned it and the sponge to their rightful places; one in the kitchen wardrobe and one in the cupboard under the sink, respectively.
She decided she would sleep on it, she would be the first to awake tomorrow again and she would have made a plan by then. She wouldnât be meeting Lily at the fireplace, no way, not tonight but it would be sorted in the morning.
A/n: Thank you so much for reading, we finally got there. I wanted to show Rose a bit more before getting to Narnia, although just because they haven't gone doesn't mean others haven't yet. This day of chores Rose had was the same day the Pevensie's fell into Narnia (well, Susan and Peter fell) so that means it won't be very long before they get there. So if you want to see that, please don't forget to like, comment and repost. They really do mean the world to me.

1940- Carlisle, England.
A white rundown farmhouse sits in the countryside. Alone for miles, surrounded by silence and the wind. Not a sound to be heard, even the children inside remain silent. Afraid of the outside, afraid of what might find them if they make a small noise. Children at heart, but forced to be robotic in following each instruction for fear they might come for their home next. Where before fear was not an uncommon emotion, felt only when they were caught breaking a vase while playing in the sitting room or slipping off the monkey bars at the park. Now, it became the base emotion for each day. No longer did children wake up with joy for the day or glee to sleep in for the weekend. No longer could they feel like children. Not after the big metal casings started falling from the sky and making really loud noises, causing fire to spread where it landed and destroying the Earth around it. Not after they were rushed from their homes to the nearest train station. Not when their parents had to stay behind, the chance of never seeing their children again was the only thing in their mind.
St. Philomenaâs Orphanage. Thatâs where many of the girls ended up during the rush to leave London. Lost to the countryâs back roads, surrounded only by fields and trees. It was the only option for the Venusta sisters. Their father having been sent off to war the year prior and then their mother offered the placement of a military nurse at a base somewhere across the ocean, she never told them exactly where. The girls had nothing left. No more family to be shipped off to on such short notice. Nowhere in the world that wanted nor needed them. And so, to the orphanage they went.
Lily Venusta, the oldest of the two, was always her fatherâs daughter. Strong in the face of danger and the bravest in sight when running from the war. Her face stayed stern as she said goodbye to her mother, as she boarded the train, as she calmed her sister throughout the journey, even as they were unceremoniously welcomed into the orphanage. She stayed strong for her sister, she wanted to be strong for her.
Her sister, however, tells a different story. Rose Venusta, the younger sister, though not by much, took after her mother more. Raised by her motherâs optimism, she looks at the world as one would family and friends. Taking each day with compassion and always treating everyone with the kindness her mother taught her to live by.
When it came to leaving home, her emotions were laid bare, but she followed her sisterâs strength. She looked to the other children around them, sadness clouded the train cart. In a moment where her sister had fallen asleep, Rose grabbed one of her books from her bag and slipped away from their seats. She went towards a young girl all alone in the corner. Sitting across from her, she set the book between them, not saying a word. Not pushing an interaction. She looked up from picking at her fingernails, her eyes puffy but face hard. Neither had she said anything, she sat analysing Rose who had expected this. Near the start of the journey, some boys had picked on her for the tangles in her long black hair. The girl was unsure if she could trust Rose, she could be mocking her too, maybe calling her illiterate and poor due to the state of her hair. She hadnât known, she couldnât have known the compassion Rose only had to offer.
But her eyes, her eyes seemed kind. The girl thought that maybe she could be nice, her hesitancy caused her to glance at the book instead. Maybe it could offer insight into her intentions. The Hobbit. That was one of the girlâs favourite books. Rose notices her change in demeanour immediately, her eyes light up in the dull room lit only with lamps and the slight light from the evening sun behind the clouds.
     âHave you read it?â
Her head jolted up, Rose smiled kindly, hoping to encourage her to talk. The girl looked down shyly and Rose took it as an opportunity to try again. âI, myself, am fascinated with the creatures. It truly is incredible to consider, donât you agree?â
     Silence.
A few families nearby chatter lowly, a quiet hum in the background. And then, a slight nod. But an answer.
âI quite like the concept of elves. However, dragons would be quite interesting to see through that window.â The girl smiles as they look out the window, imagining Smaug himself flying alongside them. Breathing fire on the countryside and lighting the world up with the flames.
âI like Bilbo because he likes staying home. I like staying home.â Sympathy crosses Roseâs features but they both continue looking out the window. Maybe if they continue imaging a dragon he may come and finish the war for once and all.
They let time fly by them, stuck in their imagination of myths beyond their knowledge. Before a reflection of sandy blonde hair disrupted their imagination, a stark contrast to Roseâs chestnut brown and the jet black hair of the girl. âRose.â The two turn their heads to her as she continues, âTime to come back to our seats, it shouldnât be much longer.â
Rose smiles and looks at the girl, âDid you bring one with you?â She lightly touches the book still left between them. The girl shakes her head, looking sad again. With one motion, Rose stands and pushes the book towards the girl, âI have another one, you take this.â Before the girl could refuse, the sisters were gone. Leaving the young girl, whose name was never shared, with a smile on her face, hugging the book close to her heart. A reminder of home, a reminder of her family.
A/n: I really hope everyone enjoyed this, it's the start of our story and hopefully you don't have to wait too long before the first chapter. I won't be including the scenes in the movie that stay the same just because the wait will be 10 years for a chapter knowing me. So please don't forget to like, comment and repost :)

Lily and Rose Venusta are sisters living in an orphanage to escape the war as their mother was a nurse and recruited. While their father was recruited to fight prior to their mother's deployment, their home was destroyed and they had no other family. And so they ended up at an orphanage where the fire was never lit. They'd sneak down at night and sit in front of the fireplace, grasping onto lingering memories of their home. But one night, a cold breeze, colder than any in a May night. Confused, they look into the unlit fireplace, just to see a snowy landscape on the other side. They must go through, it calls to them. Something...no, someone is waiting for them.
OC's
Lily Venusta
The fierce and passionate older sister who has always idolised her father is severely out of her element when plunged into this fantastical world. Her surroundings no longer explained by science, to her, nothing made sense anymore. If there was no facts and logic to go by, then how can she expect to survive? Especially when her hot-headedness collides dangerously with a certain prophesied High King.
Rose Venusta
And her younger bubbly sister who was taught her sensitive nature by her mother perfectly contrasts her sister as she feels completely at home in the otherworldly land. The environments and creatures seemingly come straight from her imagination. No longer did the war feel so intimidating, no longer was she as scared as she once was. This place had already made her feel eternally thriving, she knew exactly what this world had wanted from her.
