Why I care about Hong Kong Extradition Law
This is a little long but I know a lot of you donât really know whatâs happening with the protest in Hong Kong, some of my friends asked if Iâs go to the protect if I was in Hong Kong. My answer will be Yes with no doubt cuz itâs just so wrong that itâs going to take everything away from us. Â
It all started with a man from Hong Kong who was suspected to kill a person in Taiwan and fled back to HK. Taiwan canât do anything about it because Hong Kong didnât have a bill to extradite suspects back to the country and face their trial so the government used this case to implement this law to âfixâ the system. Sound pretty fair and all cuz itâs all for justice, right? It would have been good for countries with fair criminal justice system but we are talking about China here. They have a fucking 99.9% conviction rate. Thatâs right, basically all suspects they found are criminals. Not sure if you guys know this but China is notorious in HK for having fake witnesses, fake proof and torturing people to âconfessâ to a crime they have never committed. To make things worse, the way the HK government is trying to implement the law grant no right for the HK courts to interfere with the process. They canât verify if the accusation is true or if the proof or witness are legit, and they canât guarantee if the person going to China will have a fair trial, or a trial at all (cuz itâs also normal for them to detain you forever). in short, we have to give them whoever they ask for. Â
Some of you might think like oh, just donât go to China after what are they gonna do if youâve never been there? Like you must have done something right cuz they canât just accuse you of something youâve never done? NOPE. First off, they have a fucked up law saying that you could still have committed a crime against them even though you have never set foot in China. Second, they actually could just give you a crime just cuz they donât fucking like you. Some kind hearted HK people who just wanted to help the fucked up situation in China (like building schools in the name of God, trying to solve food insecurity, etc), got on their tail, and were accused of raping, harming others, and smuggling and shit. This is why this law is going to take away the freedom of HK people, the freedom of speech and their ability to separate right from wrong. Â
IF this law is actually implemented, we will not be able to protect ourselves. There would only be one political voice and this protest would be our last because everyone will be too afraid to speak their mind. And I really didnât think I would lose my home when I left for education in Canada 6 years ago. They say home is where your loved onesâ at, but what kind of home is this if you canât even live the way you want or stand up for the ones you love. Â
When I wrote this, it was around noon of June 12 in HK and I just canât sleep knowing that people in HK are fighting for our future. They are going to do their second reading later today. If they passed it, it would immediately go to the third reading and all they need is a signature and we doomed. I just hope more people will understand why we do this and i guess support us in any way you can, if you can. Â
