Biography: (TW racism, adoption, death)
In the early 1950s against the backdrop of a newly divided Korea, a young couple in search of their own American dream traveled thousands of miles to settle in the small coastal town of Bridgeport, Maine. It was there that Jung-soo and Kyung-Ja started their new life and began a family. Jung-soo had been a mechanic in Korea and applied his skills by working at a local auto shop while Kyung-ja used her training as a wartime nurse to help out at the town hospital. After a few years of settling in, the couple welcomed their first child, a little girl who they gave an American name to celebrate their new home. Joy grew up as a first generation American citizen in the little town that had become home to her parents. Although Bridgeport was small there were other immigrant families, one of whom were the Songs. That family who had raised a child of their own that Joy would find her own love story with. Jin and Joy worked to develop careers and dreams of their own but chose to stay put in the little town where they and their parents had found their new beginnings. There were struggles, as there had been for their parents. Although for the most part Bridgeport was an idyllic place, that didnât mean there were no hard times. The US still had plenty of racism to offer the families. But like plenty of others before and that came after, Joy and Jin held their heads high and lived the life they wanted.
By the time Avery was born in the middle of the 1980s, Jin had become a well established teacher at Bridgeportâs high school while Joy spent her days as a court stenographer. Despite working full time the pair dedicated everything they could to their daughter. Her childhood was filled with every opportunity and activity to try the little girl could ask for.
But it wasnât until a stray cat took refuge in the Song family garage and had kittens that Avery discovered her true passion-caring for animals. After the Songs found good homes for the mama cat and her few kittens, Avery began taking in and looking after every animal she could which could cause a bit of exasperation on the part of Joy and Jin but nonetheless they were thrilled to see their daughter learn what she wanted to do with her life. Combined with a knack and significant interest in science, Avery realized she wanted to be a veterinarian.Â
During high school she started helping out at the local clinic while the family dealt with some large changes. When Avery was 16, her parents took in Veronica Phan, their god-daughter after her parents passed away. Although adjusting to having a new adoptive five year old sister took a beat, Avery absolutely adored Ronnie from the start and did everything she could to ensure she felt safe and loved growing up. Even when she went away to college and veterinary school, Avery tried to come home as often as possible to spend time with her parents and Ronnie as the girl grew up. Upon graduation moved away from home to get her bachelor's degree in biology and DVM from Cornell the new doctor returned home to Bridgeport and began working under her mentor Dr. Vernon at the same clinic sheâd volunteered at in high school. Upon his passing, his will passed ownership of the clinic to Avery. Although the task was initially daunting, she found her rhythm.Since then the clinic has been her life. A familiar pillar of the community, Avery loves to be a part of Bridgeport and do what she can to support the town that has given her and her family so much over the years.
