Fourth Grade Art at Avenues

A big huge congratulations to all the fourth grade students on a wonderful year of work in fourth grade art. Please come back to visit us!

The fabulous results are currently on display on the first floor next to the music rooms. Students decided that the work is about spring in  “the city that never sleeps”–New York–and the final result includes graffiti, collaged imagery from comics, painted stars, a man on the moon, and a pigeon!

One work by each student is currently installed on the first floor of the school next to the music rooms and will be viewable until May 20.

The finished works on canvas will be displayed at our art show in early March!

Fourth grade students visited PACE and Paul Kasmin galleries this past week. They viewed artworks by artists, David Hockney, Wang Guangle, James Nares, and Elliott Puckette. Along with completing an assignment and having discussions within the gallery spaces, they also got to use their iPads to take pictures. The works that students saw gave them inspiration for their current abstract painting assignment and their upcoming assignment on iPad drawing. These photographs will be used to complete their next project in art class, iPad drawings.

One student even toughed it out by painting with a broken arm! 

Continuing with their study of mark making, fourth grade students have been experimenting with different kinds of paintbrushes. In these works, students used nine different types of brushes . Working at different stations, they experimented with flat and round brushes, brushes of varying sizes, and brushes with different textures (smooth, coarse or foam. Students were asked: What kinds of marks can I make with different brushes? How does the way I hold the brush affect my mark? How does the size of the brush affect the brush? With what brushes will I have more or less control over my mark? What is the best brush to make certain types of marks?

Next, fourth graders explored color as a part of their mark making unit. In these works completed in oil pastel and watercolor students asked: What happens if you use a certain combination of colors? How can the colors change the feeling of a work?

Fourth grade students asked: What is a mark? What are the different types of marks that you can make? Using only black materials, students created a series of marks then chose their favorite to repeat many times within the same work. Their markmaking works are hanging outside the fourth floor north elevators. Come take a look!

Above we see some of the wonderful texture paintings that third graders finished in the past week. The materials above include: paint, plaster strips, sawdust, pencil shavings, plastic pieces, aluminum foil, feathers, wire, glitter, and flour.

Here is a look at one fourth grade student's portfolio project. This student chose to splatter paint and then collage photos of bobble head on top of his images, resulting in a delightful take on pop imagery. 

Fourth grade students visited galleries this week for an in depth discussion of contemporary art in person. They saw works by artists, Joan Mitchell and Tara Donovan. One group also had the opportunity to ask specific questions about the artworks to a gallery representative.
